Child Spacing And Contraception Among The Poor In Zambia., Rashmi Gupta, Vijayan K. Pillai Mar 2010

Child Spacing And Contraception Among The Poor In Zambia., Rashmi Gupta, Vijayan K. Pillai

Social Work Faculty Publications & Presentations-Archive

For decades, family planning programs have targeted women in developing countries. These programs bestow a great deal of autonomy on women with respect to fertility decision making. It is well known that a number of close relatives in multigenerational and extended family systems influence women’s fertility decisions with respect to child spacing and contraceptive use. One approach toward a systematic study of fertility decision making is to explicitly consider the husband’s influences on fertility decision making. This study examines the effects of a selected number of factors on the desired birth interval lengths. We interviewed husbands and wives separately from …

Going Green To Save Some Green: Library Contributions To Campus Sustainability, Christopher Sweet, Meg Miner

Scholarly Publications

In a time of shrinking endowments and reduced budgets can libraries really hope to make an impact on a global problem like climate change? In this presentation Illinois Wesleyan University librarians Meg Miner and Chris Sweet will argue that not only can libraries play a significant role in furthering campus sustainability but that dwindling budgets can actually be a catalyst for positive environmental changes. Miner and Sweet are both members of the Illinois Wesleyan GREENetwork and will draw upon their personal experiences in campus environmental efforts for this presentation; they will offer practical ideas for implementing “green” library initiatives that …

Effect Of African Nightshade Species (Solanaceae) On Developmental Time And Life Table Parameters Of Tetranychus Evansi (Acari: Tetranychidae), Lucy Kananu Murungi, Aggrey Nyende, John Wesonga, Peter Masinde, Markus Knapp Mar 2010

Effect Of African Nightshade Species (Solanaceae) On Developmental Time And Life Table Parameters Of Tetranychus Evansi (Acari: Tetranychidae), Lucy Kananu Murungi, Aggrey Nyende, John Wesonga, Peter Masinde, Markus Knapp

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The effect of five African nightshade (Solanum sp.) species on the biological and demographic parameters of the tomato spider mite, Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard, was examined in the laboratory at 25 ± 1°C, 70-80% RH and 12L:12D photoperiod. Duration of each development stage, reproduction rate, longevity, intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm), and doubling time (DT) of the tomato spider mite on the five nightshade species were calculated. The results indicated that S. villosum, S. scabrum, S. tarderemotum and S. americanum are more suitable for T. evansi due to a shorter developmental period, longer adult longevity, higher reproduction and …

Hair Analysis Provides A Historical Record Of Cortisol Levels In Cushing's Syndrome, S. Thomson, G. Koren, L. A. Fraser, M. Rieder, T. C. Friedman, S. H.M. Van Uum Mar 2010

Hair Analysis Provides A Historical Record Of Cortisol Levels In Cushing's Syndrome, S. Thomson, G. Koren, L. A. Fraser, M. Rieder, T. C. Friedman, S. H.M. Van Uum

Paediatrics Publications

The severity of Cushing's Syndrome (CS) depends on the duration and extent of the exposure to excess glucocorticoids. Current measurements of cortisol in serum, saliva and urine reflect systemic cortisol levels at the time of sample collection, but cannot assess past cortisol levels. Hair cortisol levels may be increased in patients with CS, and, as hair grows about 1cm/month, measurement of hair cortisol may provide historical information on the development of hypercortisolism. We attempted to measure cortisol in hair in relation to clinical course in six female patients with CS and in 32 healthy volunteers in 1cm hair sections. Hair …

Multi-National Licensure In Landscape Architecture: Searching For Its Impact On The Profession, Madhavi B. Sonar

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

This thesis summarizes the knowledge base and understanding of key informants regarding multi-national licensure in landscape architecture, a topic made timely because of the increase in international practice by landscape architects, and differences in the profession's standards and regulations globally. It also examines the potential impacts of multi-national licensure on the profession. To accomplish this, the thesis examines licensure practices in both landscape architecture and architecture (which is more familiar with issues of international practice,) and it focuses on implications of the issues on professional practice and academic practice in landscape architecture. This research is based on the hypothesis that the …

Providing quality urban spaces including plazas and pedestrian malls encourages use of the Central Business District (CBD) and stimulates a vibrant atmosphere for casual strolling, window shopping, and browsing (Rubenstein, 1992). Dallas, Texas, which in many people's minds defines the term `automobile city', has developed and implemented a visionary plan since the early 1990s' for using light rail as a tool for economic growth and community development. Thus, Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART's) starter system of light rail opened in June 1996, and a city that grew up with the automobile embraced transit as an integral part of its future …

Suburban Landmarks In North Arlington: Perceptions Of Experts And Non-Experts, Su-Yu Cheng

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Each individual perceives the world differently and attains knowledge in distinct ways (Rapoport 1977). With regard to perception about specific places, some individuals function as "insiders." This means their perceptions are engaged with place through daily experiences familiarizing them with the landscape. Others function as "outsiders," ¬¬unconcerned with or unaware of landscape events, thereby perceiving only the surfaces meaning of such events (Dearden 1984, Craik 1970, Bourassa 1991). One example of this dichotomy between insiders and outsiders can be found among design experts and non-experts. Design experts, such as landscape architects, architects, and planners, are directly involved with landscape aesthetics …

North Texas Stakeholders: Perceptions Of Extensive Green Roofs, Matthew Heath House

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Green roofs are not a new technology. The first recorded green roof was the Hanging Gardens of Babylon built by King Nebuchadnezzar for his wife Amyitis who missed her lush homeland (Osmundson 1999). However, since the late 1990s, the term green roof has taken on ecological and social significance beyond its seemingly simplistic description. The term has become an epithet for the reduction of pollution and urban heat islands, for large scale mitigation of storm water run-off, and for maximum utilization of urban land (Cantor 2008). This research examines perceptions about extensive green roofs held by developers, city officials, architects, …
