Storm Tracks In The Southern Hemisphere: Strength And Trends, Yanjuan Guo Aug 2010

Storm Tracks In The Southern Hemisphere: Strength And Trends, Yanjuan Guo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this work, some fundamental characteristics of the Southern Hemisphere (SH) storm tracks are investigated by using the reanalyses, observational data as well as IPCC 20th Century simulations. Large discrepancies exist between the NCEP/NCAR and ECMWF ERA40 reanalyses in depicting the strength of the SH storm tracks, one of its key and fundamental properties. By comparing the reanalyses with radiosonde and satellite retrieved temperature (SATEMP) observations, it is found that the SH storm tracks in the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis is biased weak because the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis assimilates SATEMP (instead of the raw radiance) whose variance is biased low. Furthermore, the first …

Legislative Consequences Of Changing Judicial Doctrine: How U.S. Supreme Court Decisions Affect Congressional Policymaking, Naser Javaid Aug 2010

Legislative Consequences Of Changing Judicial Doctrine: How U.S. Supreme Court Decisions Affect Congressional Policymaking, Naser Javaid

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The constitutional structure of the federal government means the three branches often must interact during the policymaking process. Despite this need for interaction among the branches, few scholars have given attention to how the decisions of the Supreme Court may affect congressional policymaking, broadly defined. I argue that the Court's constitutional decisions can meaningfully impact congressional policymaking, both directly and indirectly. The Court's constitutional decisions not only determine the legitimate scope of congressional authority but also establish legal regimes within which members of Congress must act. During more restrictive legal regimes, members of Congress will be more likely to focus …

Know Thyself: Plato's Alcibiades I And The Foundation Of Philosophical Knowing, James Michael Ambury Aug 2010

Know Thyself: Plato's Alcibiades I And The Foundation Of Philosophical Knowing, James Michael Ambury

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Plato's Alcibiades I, the principle topic of which is self-knowledge, was held in great respect by Neoplatonist commentators and philosophers generally for over 2000 years before its authenticity came into question in the middle of the 19th century. Recent commentary on the topic of self-knowledge in Plato has, for the most part, allowed suspicions of inauthenticity to diminish the importance of this dialogue and its contribution to our understanding of self-knowledge in Platonic philosophy. The goal of this dissertation is twofold: first, it seeks to rehabilitate the Alcibiades I by arguing that it, and it alone, provides us with the …

Reovirus As A Probe To Study Induction Of Anti-Viral Immunity And Modulation Of Peanut Allergy, Ronald J. Fecek Jr. Aug 2010

Reovirus As A Probe To Study Induction Of Anti-Viral Immunity And Modulation Of Peanut Allergy, Ronald J. Fecek Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Infectious diarrheal diseases are a major burden to human health worldwide. A proportion of those diarrheal diseases are caused by enteric viruses that gain access through the gastrointestinal tract. Consequently, the human gastrointestinal mucosa represents an important route of entry for enteric viruses. Enteric viruses are taken up by gastrointestinal mucosal dendritic cells (DCs) that induce and shape adaptive immunity, however, activation of mucosal DCs by enteric viruses is poorly understood. The research presented in this dissertation is focused on deciphering the requirements for activation of murine DCs in response to an enteric virus as well as the subsequent generation …

Understanding what the trypanosome pathogens are, their vectors and mode of transmission underpin efforts to control the disease they cause in both humans and livestock. The risk of transmission is estimated by determining what proportion of the vector population is carrying the infectious pathogens. This risk also depends on the infectivity of the trypanosomes to humans and livestock. Most livestock pathogens are not infective to humans, whereas the two sub-species that infect humans also infect livestock. As with other infectious diseases, we can therefore trace the foundation of many continuing disease control programs for trypanosomiasis to the discovery of the …

Real Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite Systems In Railroad Transportation, Peter Joseph Dailey Aug 2010

Real Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite Systems In Railroad Transportation, Peter Joseph Dailey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Transportation of freight by rail is an exceptionally fuel-efficient mode. Rail's exceptional efficiency comes with a high cost for inspection and maintenance of the railway to insure train safety at design speed. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) imposes operational safety by requiring compliance with regulations that rely on timely track inspection.;Further, new standards for train movement authority, known collectively as positive train control, require knowledge of a train's exact location on the railway. This knowledge has traditionally relied on wired track circuits due to the need to distinguish a train's location on two or more parallel tracks.;The research examines a …

A Comparison Of Perceptions Among Amateur And Pga Professional Golfer To The Five Design Principles Of Golf Course Architecture, Ryan Woodard Johnson

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Golf was originally a game played primarily on landscapes that were not manipulated by humans. As the game has matured, humans have exerted increasing influence on the design of golf courses. As in art, golf course architecture has developed its own set of principles and its own set of elements. The elements are the tools the artist uses to create the painting, while the principles guide how he/she implements these elements (Lovett 1999). In the case of golf course architects, the land is the canvas while the greens, tees, fairways, roughs, hazards, and contours are examples of the elements used …

Stakeholders' Perceptions Of Pedestrian Accessibility To Green Infrastructure: Fort Worth's Urban Villages, Petrine M. Abrahams

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Green infrastructure refers to a strategically managed network of natural and open spaces that provides ecological benefits for human and wildlife populations in urbanized areas (Benedict and McMahon, 2006; Sandstrom, 2002; Weber, Sloan, and Wolf, 2005). Recent studies demonstrate a relationship between green infrastructure, and human and ecological health in urbanized areas (Tzoulas et al. 2007; Wilson, 1986; Louv, 2008). By strategically increasing density and a mix of uses in existing, sparsely populated urban areas, the "urban village" model developed by the City of Fort Worth presents the opportunity to incorporate accessible green infrastructure in an urban environment in order …

Assessing Stormwater Runoff With "Swat" In Mixed-Use Developments: Learning From Southlake Town Square And Addison Circle In North Texas, Brian S. Parker

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Recognizing environmental problems associated with sprawl, North Texas communities are looking at options for future growth. Higher density mixed-used developments (MXDs) are being considered as an alternative to the continuation of current trends and adopted plans, yet little is known how they impact the region environmentally (Vision North Texas, 2008). More specifically, it is not clear how these developments perform in regard to stormwater runoff and water pollution. This research evaluates the stormwater runoff and water pollution of two mixed-use developments (MXDs) in order to understand their environmental role in the future of North Texas. The research question in this …

Understanding the scholarly development of Ph.D. students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is vital to the preparation of the scientific workforce. During doctoral study, students learn to be professional scientists and acquire the competencies to succeed in those roles. However, this complex process is not well studied. Research to date suffers from overreliance on a narrow range of methods that cannot provide data appropriate for addressing questions of causality or effectiveness of specific practices in doctoral education. We advocate a shift in focus from student and instructor self-report toward the use of actual performance data as a remedy …

Skeletal muscle fibrosis is present in the diaphragm of the mdx mouse, a model for Duchenne dystrophy. In both the mouse and human, dystrophic muscle exhibits pronounced increases in NF-κ B signaling. Various inhibitors of this pathway, such as pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), have been shown to have beneficial effects on dystrophic (mdx) muscle. The present study characterizes the development of fibrosis in the mdx musculature, and determines the fibrolytic efficacy of PDTC and UDCA. The results indicate that collagen accumulation and the expression of fibrogenic (TGF-β1) and fibrolytic (MMP-9) mediators are dependent on muscle origin in …

Why Magic Bullets Don't Work, David F. Feldon

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

We always tell our students that there are no shortcuts, that important ideas are nuanced, and that recognizing subtle distinctions is an essential critical-thinking skill. Mastery of a discipline, we know, requires careful study and necessarily slow, evolutionary changes in perspective. Then we look around for the latest promising trend in teaching and jump in with both feet, expecting it to transform our students, our courses, and our outcomes. Alternatively, we sniff disdainfully at the current educational fad and proudly stand by the instructional traditions of our disciplines or institutions, secure in our knowledge that the “tried and true” has …

Mitochondrial Katp Channel Inhibition Blunts Arrhythmia Protection In Ischemic Exercised Hearts, John C. Quindry, Lindsey Schreiber, Peter Hosick, Jenna Wrieden, J. Megan Irwin, Emily Hoyt

Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education Scholarship and Creative Works

The mechanisms responsible for anti-arrhythmic protection during ischemia-reperfusion (IR) in exercised hearts are not fully understood. The purpose of this investigation was to examine whether the ATP-sensitive potassium channels in the mitochondria (mito KATP) and sarcolemma (sarc K ATP) provide anti-arrhythmic protection in exercised hearts during IR. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to cardioprotective treadmill exercise or sedentary conditions before IR (I = 20 min, R = 30 min) in vivo. Subsets of exercised animals received pharmacological inhibitors for mito KATP (5-hydroxydecanoate) or sarc KATP (HMR1098) before IR. Blinded analysis of digital ECG tracings revealed that mito KATP inhibition …

Do Psychology Researchers Tell It Like It Is? A Microgenetic Analysis Of Research Strategies And Self-Report Accuracy, David F. Feldon

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Acquiring research skills is considered to be a highly challenging aspect of developing expertise in the social sciences. Because instruction and mentoring in these skills are typically grounded in the self-report of researchers, difficulties in learning the material may be due to the content and accuracy of these explanations. Using a mixed-method, microgenetic design, this study examines the explanations of problem-solving processes by researchers along a continuum of expertise during simulated experiment design and subsequent data analysis. Findings indicate that participants’ self-explanations are largely inaccurate. Further, frequency of inaccurate statements is positively associated with the frequency of abstract cognitive processes, …

While recent studies have suggested that positive developmental outcomes may result from participating in camp experiences, it is unclear what specific aspects of camp (e.g., staff dispositions, counselor teams, non-counselor staff) might influence these camper outcomes. Previous studies have measured the autonomy support of schoolteachers and found that more autonomy-supportive dispositions that, for example, engage autonomy, relatedness, and competence through the use of meaningful choice or rationale have positive effects on student developmental outcomes (e.g., intrinsic motivation, competence, self-esteem). Unlike schools, camps are noncompulsory recreation environments and most are outdoor-based. The existence of differences between the physical, social, and motivational …

Field surveys were carried out in four agroecological zones to assess the geographic distribution, host range and perennation of Cotesia sesamiae and Cotesia flavipes in cultivated and natural habitats in Kenya. The distribution of the two Cotesia species in different ecological regions was most affected by the suitability of the local stem borer species for parasitoid development, and temperature, as both species were found in localities dominated by their suitable host(s) where temperature favoured their occurrence. Fourteen years after its release, C. flavipes has maintained a high level of specificity to its target host Chilo partellus on maize and sorghum …

Normative Approaches To Values In Science, Kristina Rolin Jun 2010

Normative Approaches To Values In Science, Kristina Rolin

XIV IAPh Symposium 2010

This presentation is part of the Reconsidering Values in Feminist Philosophy of Science track.

During the last three decades feminist philosophers of science have argued that the traditional ideal of value-free science should be replaced because either it is not feasible – or even if it is feasible, it is not a desirable epistemic goal. The traditional ideal of value-free science is the normative claim that social and moral values are not allowed to play a role in the reasoning and decision-making processes that scientists are engaged in when they decide to accept something as scientific knowledge, either individually or …

Food Habits Of Wintering Waterfowl On The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Josh L. Vest, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Two invertebrates, brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) and brine flies (Ephydridac), occur in great densities in the Great Salt Lake (GSL) but it is unknown whether ducks forage extensively on them during winter or rely on freshwater food. Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula), Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeala) and Green-winged Teal (Anas crecca) were collected from the GSL during winters 2004–05 and 2005–06 to evaluate their food habits. Brine shrimp and brine flies comprised more than 70% of the winter diet of these ducks. Common Goldeneyes consumed mainly brine fly larvae (68% based on dry weight biomass), which live primarily along the substrate. …

Bicuspid Aortic Valve Disease, Samuel C. Siu, Candice K. Silversides Jun 2010

Bicuspid Aortic Valve Disease, Samuel C. Siu, Candice K. Silversides

Paediatrics Publications

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) disease is the most common congenital cardiac defect. While the BAV can be found in isolation, it is often associated with other congenital cardiac lesions. The most frequent associated finding is dilation of the proximal ascending aorta secondary to abnormalities of the aortic media. Changes in the aortic media are present independent of whether the valve is functionally normal, stenotic, or incompetent. Although symptoms often manifest in adulthood, there is a wide spectrum of presentations ranging from severe disease detected in utero to asymptomatic disease in old age. Complications can include aortic valve stenosis or incompetence, …

Bovine jugular veins (BJVs) (Contegra) are valve-bearing pulmonary artery substitutes. Their valves have higher profiles than human pulmonary valves; this might result in less optimal performance. Therefore, we investigated the impact of stress and undersizing on conduit performance with ergometry, echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Between April 2007 and June 2008, 20 BJV recipients (age 7.9-19.6 years) underwent spiroergometry and subsequent echocardiography; after due rest, ergometry was repeated and followed by MRI during recovery. A year later, exams were repeated. Data was evaluated as follows: comparison of stress related maximal individual valve performance changes (magnetic resonance: exercise induced average …
