Two-Zone Transient Storage Modeling Using Temperature And Solute Data With Multiobjective Calibration: 1. Temperature, Bethany T. Neilson, S. C. Chapra, David King Stevens, Christina J. Bandaragoda
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper presents the formulation and calibration of the temperature portion of a two-zone temperature and solute (TZTS) model which separates transient storage into surface (STS) and subsurface transient storage (HTS) zones. The inclusion of temperature required the TZTS model formulation to differ somewhat from past transient storage models in order to accommodate terms associated with heat transfer. These include surface heat fluxes in the main channel (MC) and STS, heat and mass exchange between the STS and MC, heat and mass exchange between the HTS and MC, and heat exchange due to bed and deeper ground conduction. To estimate …

This paper presents the multiobjective calibration results for temperature and solutefrom a two‐zone temperature and solute (TZTS) model which separates transient storageinto surface (STS) and subsurface (HTS) transient storage components. This modelcontains terms associated with surface heat fluxes in the main channel (MC) and STS, heatand mass exchange between the STS and MC, heat and mass exchange between the HTSand MC, and heat exchange due to bed and deeper ground conduction. To estimate theadditional parameters associated with a multiple‐zone model, a data collection effort wasconducted to provide temperature time series and solute tracer curves representingthe movement of heat and/or solute …

Effects Of Three Emulsion Compositions On Taste Thresholds And Intensity Ratings Of Five Taste Compounds, J. E. Thurgood, Silvana Martini
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
This study assessed the effects of three emulsified systems on taste thresholds and the near-threshold taste intensities of the five tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami). Emulsions were formulated with different lipid chemical compositions. Lipid addition in an emulsified form significantly increased thresholds for sour and bitter tastes produced by citric acid and quinine hydrochloride, respectively. No significant differences were found in the threshold levels in emulsions formulated with different lipids for the five tastes evaluated. In general, for the same tastant concentration, taste intensities for sour and bitter tastes were lower in emulsions compared with the aqueous solutions, …

Evaluating The Effect Of A Television Public Service Announcement About Epilepsy, Alexandra L.C. Martiniuk, Mary Secco, Laura Yake, Kathy N. Speechley
Paediatrics Publications
Public service announcements (PSAs) are non-commercial advertisements aiming to improve knowledge, attitudes and/or behavior. No evaluations of epilepsy PSAs exist. This study sought to evaluate a televised PSA showing first aid for a seizure. A multilevel regression analysis was used to determine the effect of the PSA on epilepsy knowledge and attitudes taking into account school-level clustering as well as individual-level variables, including socioeconomic status, gender, language and familiarity with epilepsy. Of the 803 randomly selected Grade 5 (9-11 years) students, 406 (51%) had seen the epilepsy PSA. Those who saw the PSA scored significantly higher on knowledge (P < 0.001) and had more positive attitudes (P < 0.001) about epilepsy. Those who saw the PSA had even greater knowledge about epilepsy 1 month later, even though the PSA was no longer being televised. Having viewed, the PSA continued to be associated with higher knowledge and more positive attitudes independent of the effects of a school-based epilepsy education program. © The Author 2010. Microstructural Evolution Of Surface Layers During Electrolytic Plasma Processing, Cristian Cionea
Microstructural Evolution Of Surface Layers During Electrolytic Plasma Processing, Cristian Cionea
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Electrolytic Plasma Processing is an emerging technology for surface modification. The EPP process is based on electrolysis of an aqueous electrolyte by application of an electrical potential between the workpiece and counter-electrode, and the production of plasma (micro-arc discharges on the workpiece surface). The plasma micro-arcs provide a heat source for surface modification via localized surface melting and rapid cooling (cleaning process) and, if desirable, enhance ion deposition on a given substrate (coating). Three substrates (low carbon steel, pure Al and pure Ti) were "cleaned" by EPP and their near surface layer microstructure was studied. It was found that the …

Bubble Template Synthesis Of Hollow Gold Nanoparticles And Their Applications As Theranostic Agents, Chienwen Huang
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Hollow gold nanoparticle with a sub-30nm polycrystalline shell and a 50 nm hollow core has been successfully synthesized through the reduction of sodium gold sulfite by electrochemically evolved hydrogen. Such hollow gold nanoparticles exhibit unique plasmonic properties. They strongly scatter and absorb near infrared light. In this thesis we seek to understand the formation mechanism of hollow gold nanoparticles in this new synthesis process and their plasmonic properties. Also, we explore their biomedical applications as theranostic agents (therapeutic and diagnostic imaging). A lithographically patterned electrode consisting of Ag stripes on a glass substrate was used to investigate the formation process …
Study On The Leakage Current Behavior And Conduction Mechanism Of Porous Low-K In Cu/Porous Low-K Interconnects: The Influence Of Extrinsic Factors, Liangshan Chen
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
This study investigates the influence of extrinsic factors including moisture and impurities trapped in porous low-k (PLK) and defective diffusion barrier on the leakage current behavior and the associated conduction mechanism of PLK in advanced Cu/PLK interconnects. For this purpose, a voltammetry technique that was previously developed for diffusion barrier characterization was extended to detect the trapped impurities in PLK. With this technique in hand, the influence of extrinsic factors was then studied. Cu was found to diffuse out into PLK through barrier defects in the presence of electric stress. Its out-diffusion and subsequent migration in PLK manifested as a …

The overall objective of our research was to integrate various sensors on to a single flexible substrate for multi-sensory information gathering. Additional capabilities could be incorporated towards the realization of 'smart skin' for simultaneous and real time sensing of various mechanical, biological and chemical stimuli. Recent research venues are dictated by the trend of shifting from conventional silicon (Si) substrates to lower weight, low profile, structurally robust and lower cost flexible substrates. These flexible substrates easily conform to non-planar objects, could be batch fabricated at lower cost and enable multilayer construction. This would eventually evolve into seamless assimilation of sensors …

The Devil's Belt is a historical novel. Its protagonist, Thomas Dorset, is a Long Island native who is sent to England in 1767 to complete his general and medical education. When he returns in 1777, he finds his childhood hometown of Mattituck, New York, much changed by the British occupation. A faithful subject, he clings to his belief that the colonies shouldn't separate from England until the number of abuses suffered by neighbors, friends and family at the British army's hands become too great to ignore. He then joins in the fight to secure American independence.

An Algebraic Representation Of The Task Mapping For Parallel Computing, Yuxiang Gao
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Task mapping has been explored intensively by computer and computational scientists for the purposes of maximizing utilization of computing resources by reducing communication and load imbalance. Task mapping is known to be NP-complete as a combinatorial optimization problem and, thus, many efforts intending to search for optimal solutions are not succeeding. All proposed mapping models to date represent parallel computers and applications as graphs with the networking capability abstracted as a supply matrix whose entries represent the inter-node communication costs and the communication requirements of the sub-tasks abstracted as a demand matrix whose entries represent the inter-subtask communication loads. The …

Control Of Cuticle Sclerotization In Two Species Of Tsetse Fly Larvae (Diptera: Glossinidae), David L. Whitehead
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The presence of ecdysteroids during the larval life cycle and in the abdomens and ovaries of pregnant tsetse flies was established using radioimmunoassay. The hormone titre rises on day 9 of the larval life cycle 2-3 days after the hardening of the polypneustic lobes, mouthparts, phragma and anus. How initiation of tanning of the cuticle of the polypneustic lobes and later the puparium of tsetse fly is regulated is discussed as these events are separated in time by several days. It would seem to be unlikely that the pyrokinin neuropeptide, which is responsible for initiating the events that lead up …

Poor instruction has been cited as a primary cause of attrition from STEM majors and a major obstacle to learning for those who stay [Seymour and Hewitt [1997]. Talking about leaving: Why undergraduates leave the sciences. Boulder, CO: Westview]. Using a double-blind design, this study tests the hypothesis that the lack of explicit instructions in scientific inquiry skills is a major factor in both low STEM retention and academic underperformance. This project delivered supplemental instruction to students in a laboratory-based undergraduate biology course (n = 314) that was derived either from cognitive task analyses (CTAs) conducted with expert biologists (treatment) …

Currently, the systematics of the African noctuid stem borers of the subtribe Sesamiina, which include major pests of cereals, is confused. In addition, their ecology is poorly known, as are the factors influencing their evolution. In this paper, we address these shortcomings for two genera of the Sesamiina, Sciomesa Tams & Bowden and Carelis Bowden. Mixed Bayesian phylogenetic analysis, which included their host plants and two mitochondrial genes, showed the genus Sciomesa to be polyphyletic. Two new genera were created, Pirateolea and Feraxinia. The genus Carelis proved to be paraphyletic and was subdivided into two sub-genera. The genera Sciomesa, Carelis …
Short Historical Overview And Comparison Of The Pitch Width And Speed Rates Of The Vibrato Used In Sonatas And Partitas For Solo Violin By Johann Sebastian Bach As Found In Recordings Of Famous Violinists Of The Twentieth And The Twenty-First Centuries, Tomislav Dimov
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This doctoral research project explores the use of violin vibrato present in recordings of the Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV 1001-1006 by Johann Sebastian Bach, made by forty prominent violinists during the last 100 years. It reports strictly on two of the most objectively measurable and characteristic parameters of the vibrato---its width and rate.;Forming an essential part of the violinist's central repertory for more than a century, Bach's cycle has received the highest levels of scholarly and artistic attention and the matter of vibrato has certainly been examined. However, to date there has been no systematic study …

The process of mechanical design involves many steps, starting from a customer need. Then the engineer estimates the possible solutions until an optimal product is achieved. Through these design steps, information is created and exchanged among different design activities. Currently the industry lacks a means to preserve this information flow for future use.;In the end, much of the information generated in the design process may not be available due to obsolete software used to create the design; one missing part of the process; a missing link between the design tasks; unknown context of the design, and some other possibilities.;The present …

Speech Act, Evidentiality, And Implicature In The Korean Topic-Construction, Jung Sun Son
UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive
Is it possible to map pragmatic or discourse-oriented features onto the syntax level? The Korean topic marker -(n)un has a contrastive reading that induces conventional implicature, and is closely associated with a modal morpheme that can be regarded as a kind of agreement with evidentials. This paper attempts to represent such pragmatic features (implicature and evidentiality) as being involved in the topic-construction at the syntax level. To accomplish this, the paper introduces a Speech Act Projection (SAP), whose head encodes illocutionary force, and an Evidentiality Projection (EvidP), which is headed by a modal morpheme or evidential marker. The conventional implicature …

We Shall Be Watching You, You're Going To Die, And Other Threats: A Corpus-Based Speech Act Approach, Natalie Raun Carter
UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive
Using a speech act approach, this paper examines the similarities and differences between English-language threats made by terrorists and those made by non-terrorists, with a focus on pronoun use and sentence-type. Both groups employ a variety of sentence-types in their threats, but use declarative statements most often. 1st person nominative pronouns occur as subjects of clauses much more frequently than 2nd person pronouns in both the terrorist and non-terrorist threat data. Non-terrorist threats, however, make significantly more use of the 1st person singular nominative pronoun, while terrorist threats use the 1st person plural nominative pronoun more frequently.
