Interactional Entanglements: A Frame Analysis Of Negotiated Identities In Ethnographic Research On The Language Classroom, Mark A. Ouellette Nov 2010

Interactional Entanglements: A Frame Analysis Of Negotiated Identities In Ethnographic Research On The Language Classroom, Mark A. Ouellette

UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive

This study examines interactional entanglements that occurred during ethnographer-participant interactions in a language classroom. It draws upon Goffman's notion of framing to analyze how research participants use deixis to position the ethnographer vis-à-vis themselves within classroom speech events. The analysis shows that the teacher and students negotiated identities by appealing to the researcher's allegiances within an underlying judicial trial frame. As a marginal native, the ethnographer is particularly susceptible to others' social positioning, which raises questions concerning the very personal involvement of the ethnographer conducting research in an educational setting. This article underscores the argument that impression management is not …

Nous And On In Semi-Formal French: Pragmatic Uses Of Institutionality And Distancing, Deborah King Nov 2010

Nous And On In Semi-Formal French: Pragmatic Uses Of Institutionality And Distancing, Deborah King

UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive

French linguists have long noted the substitution of the indefinite pronoun on for the 1st person plural pronoun nous, in both formal and informal situations. Studies of informal conversation have found this replacement to be nearly categorical (Laberge and Sankoff 1980; Coveney 2000). By contrast, this study found a much higher percentage of nous compared to on in interviews and speeches with political or business-related themes (roughly 60% nous to 40% on). The data suggest that many speakers use nous and on in pragmatically distinct ways: nous for institutionality, on for distancing. However, nous can underscore institutionality even in potentially …

Ventilatory Restraint Of Sympathetic Activity During Chemoreflex Stress, Craig D. Steinback, Toni Breskovic, Maria Frances, Zeljko Dujic, J. Kevin Shoemaker Nov 2010

Ventilatory Restraint Of Sympathetic Activity During Chemoreflex Stress, Craig D. Steinback, Toni Breskovic, Maria Frances, Zeljko Dujic, J. Kevin Shoemaker

Paediatrics Publications

The within-breath modulation of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) is well established, with greater activity occurring during expiration and less during inspiration. Whether ventilation per se affects the longer-term (i.e., minute-to-minute) regulation of MSNA has not been determined. We sought to define the specific role of ventilation in regulating sympathetic activation during chemoreflex activation, where both ventilation and MSNA are increased. Ten young healthy subjects performed both asphyxic rebreathing and repeated, rebreathing apneas to cause the same magnitude of chemoreflex stress in the presence or absence of ventilation. Both protocols caused increases in sympathetic burst frequency, burst amplitude, and burst …

Ringel-Hall Algebras And Two-Parameter Quantized Enveloping Algebras, Xin Tang Nov 2010

Ringel-Hall Algebras And Two-Parameter Quantized Enveloping Algebras, Xin Tang

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Let g be a finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebra and 3 be the finite dimensional hereditary algebra associated to g. Let U+r,s (g) (respectively U? 0r,s (g) denote the two-parameter quantized enveloping algebra of the positive maximal nilpotent (respectively Borel) Lie subalgebra of g. We study the two-parameter quantized enveloping algebras U+r,s (g) and U? 0r,s (g) using the approach of Ringel-Hall algebras. First of all, we show that U+r,s (g) is isomorphic to a certain two-parameter twisted Ringel-Hall algebra Hr,s (?), which generalizes a result of Reineke. Based on detailed computations in Hr,s (?), we show that Hr,s (?) …

Is Benefit For Individuals: Expanded Conceptualization And Comprehensive Construct Development, Jonghak Sun

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

Information systems benefits for individuals (ISBI) has been a key construct for the IS success model, which has evolved over the years to strengthen the theoretical foundation for the IS field. However, relatively little research has been done to explore, develop and validate the underlying theoretical dimensions for this crucial construct. Moreover, extant research related to this construct in particular, and to the IS success model in general, has been conducted in the context of individual IS application instead of the overall IS in the organization. This study fulfills four research objectives: (1) Develop a theory-based extended conceptualization of IS …

The Not-So-Quiet Revolution: Cautionary Comments On The Rejection Of Hypothesis Testing In Favor Of A “Causal” Modeling Alternative, Daniel H. Robinson, Joel R. Levin

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive

Rodgers (2010) recently applauded a revolution involving the increased use of statistical modeling techniques. It is argued that such use may have a downside, citing empirical evidence in educational psychology that modeling techniques are often applied in cross-sectional, correlational studies to produce unjustified causal conclusions and prescriptive statements.

Back Where They Once Belonged? Local Response To Afforestation In County Kerry, Ireland, Matthew S. Carroll, Áine Ní Dhubháin, Courtney G. Flint

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Afforestation has many benefits at the local regional and global scale. The local social impacts of planting new forests, however, depend on a variety of contextual factors and other details including who is doing the planting, which species are being planted, the location of the planting and, perhaps most importantly, existing land uses and their linkage to social and economic circumstances. This article presents case study research into these issues in two places in County Kerry Ireland. Utilising the concept of the differentiated landscape, we examine the somewhat varying social responses to afforestation in the two study sites in light …

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Newquist suggests that students' publications are important predictors of post-degree research effectiveness, due in part to the importance of collaboration in innovative research. We agree that publication record is important and helpful, but the collaborative aspects of writing render publications a noisy metric by which to assess individual growth on specific skills (1). The variable time lags between the execution of an experiment, analysis of its data, and publication of findings [e.g., (2)] further limit the ability to identify direct relationships between experiences in a doctoral program and scholarly growth. Doctoral education's overarching goal is to develop competent researchers capable …

Failed States And The Spread Of Terrorism In Sub-Saharan Africa, Tiffiany O. Howard Oct 2010

Failed States And The Spread Of Terrorism In Sub-Saharan Africa, Tiffiany O. Howard

Political Science Faculty Research

Plagued by systematic state failure, sub-Saharan Africa's failed states have helped facilitate internationally sponsored terrorist networks and operations. However, until recently, this type of activity was primarily relegated to North Africa and the Horn. But that has begun to change. Now, what was once a seemingly benign terrorist presence in sub-Saharan Africa is starting to transform into a movement, with states such as Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) now lending arms, financial support, and radical militants to the extremist jihadist movement of internationally sponsored terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda. Further, with the …

Objectives The objectives of this study were to examine: 1) B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) response to pregnancy in women with heart disease; and 2) the relationship between BNP levels and adverse maternal cardiac events during pregnancy. Background Pregnancy imposes a hemodynamic stress on the heart. BNP might be a useful biomarker to assess the ability of the heart to adapt to the hemodynamic load of pregnancy. Methods This was a prospective study of women with structural heart disease seen at our center. Serial clinical data and plasma BNP measurements were obtained during the first trimester, third trimester, and after delivery …
