Client Compliance: Can Community Mental Health Outcomes Be Predicted?, Seth Parrott

Social Work Theses - Archive

The purpose of this thesis project was to gain predictive insight into client behaviors that may affect treatment outcomes. This thesis uses data originally collected for a dissemination trial of Cognitive Behavioral therapy being introduced into Texas' community mental health system. Clients that attend scheduled therapy sessions and complete assigned homework to a higher degree are demonstrating better compliance with their treatment. It was hypothesized that those behaviors while factoring in symptom severity and amount of therapy would predict final treatment outcomes as measured by a decrease in symptoms. Multiple regression analysis of 85 participants all diagnosed with Major Depression …

New Macrocyclic Glycopeptide Antibiotic For Chiral Hplc Stationary Phases And Ionic Liquids In Analytical Chemistry, Xiaotong Zhang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

The main focus of this dissertation is on the development of new chiral stationary phases for HPLC and GC and the application of ionic liquids in analytical chemistry. They will be discussed separately in two parts. Enantiomeric separations continue to be of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry. It is because drug molecules of opposite chirality often possess distinctive effects in biological environments. Direct chromatography is one of the major techniques used to address the challenge of enantiomeric analysis. Macrocyclic glycopeptides are a very useful class of chiral selectors for HPLC stationary phases because of their broad enantioselectivity. A study …

The Development Of The Catalytic Wittig Reaction, Zachary S. Nixon Jan 2011

The Development Of The Catalytic Wittig Reaction, Zachary S. Nixon

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

The formation of carbon-carbon double bonds with stereocontrol is of great importance to synthetic chemistry. The Wittig olefination involves the treatment of an aldehyde or ketone with a phosphonium ylide; yielding an alkene product with concomitant phosphine oxide byproduct. Mechanistic studies have shown that structural and electronic properties of the phosphine and halide reagent greatly influence the stereochemical outcome (E:Z) of the olefination. However, a significant limitation of the reaction is the difficulty of removing the phosphine oxide. A process catalytic in phosphine would alleviate the aforementioned concern and allow enhanced stereocontrol. Preliminary results led to the development of the …

Slowing Dna Translocation In A Biological Protein Α-Hemolysin Ion Channel, R. Samanthi S. De Zoysa

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

During the past decade, nanopore DNA sequencing has emerged as a revolutionary prospect towards a "$1000 genome" goal set by U.S. National Institute of Health. In the nanopore approach, electrophoretic movement of polynucleotide molecules through a nanopore would provide transient current blockades that are unique to each molecule. Since kilobase length DNA can be read directly without amplification or use of costly reagents such as enzymes and fluorescent tags, the nanopore approach can significantly reduce the sequencing cost. However, due to the rapid DNA translocation velocity through the nanopore, accurate detection of single nucleotide bases via the electrophoretically driven approach …

Shear Behavior Of Steel Fiber Reinforced Prestressed Concrete Beams Without Shear Reinforcement, Jae-Sung Cho

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The ACI 318-08 building code allows to use the steel fiber reinforcement as alternative shear reinforcement with satisfying certain criteria when a beam is required minimum shear reinforcement. However, this provision applies to a nonprestressed and prestressed concrete beam such that it could be conservative since the shear strength of prestressed concrete beam is generally enhanced due to the prestressing force. This is due partially to the fact that the provision has been accepted based on researches, mostly conducted in nonprestressed concrete beam. Most of experiments conducted for prestressed concrete beam in small scale tests, with a height of specimens …

Second Order Training Algorithms For Radial Basis Function Neural Networks, Kanishka Tyagi Jan 2011

Second Order Training Algorithms For Radial Basis Function Neural Networks, Kanishka Tyagi

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

A systematic two step batch approach for constructing and training of Radial basis function (RBF) neural networks is presented. Unlike other RBF learning algorithms, the proposed paradigm uses optimal learning factors (OLF's) to train the network parameters, i.e. spread parameters, mean vector parameters and weighted distance measure (DM) coefficients. Newton's algorithm is proposed for obtaining multiple optimal learning factors (MOLF) for the network parameters. The weights connected to the output layer are trained by a supervised-learning algorithm based on orthogonal least squares (OLS). The error obtained is then back-propagated to tune the RBF parameters. The proposed hybrid training algorithm has …

Conquest, Colonization, And The Cross: Religious Aspects Of The Conquest And Colonization Of Honduras, Chad Mccutchen

History Theses - Archive

Religiosity pervades the conquest and colonization of Honduras. The secular church, the missionaries, and the colonial aristocracy all played vital roles in the process. The Hispanic social consciousness emerged out of the Reconquista which allowed a fusion of religiosity and conquest, and this psyche manifested in the New World. Spain became equally dependent on the sanctioning of the Catholic Church to justify their enterprises in the Americas. However, the extreme poverty in Honduras created a unique situation in which the ecclesiastics depended on the local mining economy to survive. Therefore the clergy in Honduras struggled to balance their economic pursuits …
