USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Class B Firefighting foams play a crucial role in protecting equipment and people fromliquid fuel fires but concerns regarding the impacts of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have resulted in bans on the use of aqueous film forming foam (AFFF). Fluorine-free replacements are yet to achieve the same level of performance. Nanoparticles including silica and clay have been used to improve foam stability, especially in environments where hydrocarbon fuels are present. These materials have also been used in solid composites to improve fire resistance. The stability of aqueous foams containing silica and Laponite RD nanoparticles along with surfactants of different …

Quantification And Diversity Of A Ubiquitous Ssdna Phage Group (Gokushovirinae) In The Red Sea Through The Polony Technique, Natalie A. Sawaya

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With average concentrations of 107 virus-like particles per milliliter of seawater, viruses comprise the second largest biomass in the ocean, where they are a driving force of microbial evolution and constitute important roles in Earth’s biogeochemical cycles. Bacteriophage (phage), viruses that infect bacteria, are of particular importance in the marine ecosystem as they impact the efficiency of the microbial loop, which recycles carbon in surface waters, counteracting vertical export through the biological pump. Although double-stranded DNA phage have been researched extensively, single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) phage remain understudied, mostly due to methodological limitations.

The incorporation of rolling circle amplification (RCA) into …

Dataset For Induced Resonance And Forces Imparted On Buildings From Volcano Infrasound, Owen A. Walsh, Jeffrey B. Johnson, Jerry C. Mock

Boise State University Infrasound Data Repository

Fuego, an active volcano in Guatemala, explodes regularly and generates powerful infrasound whose amplitude regularly exceeds 10 Pa at 10 km where rural communities are located. This study focuses on infrasound recorded at the Fuego Volcano Observatory, a ~250 m3 building located ~8 km from the vent. Records from infrasound sensors situated on either side of a wall facing the volcano were used to measure differential dynamic pressures of more than 50 Pa imparted on the wall facing the volcano. We calculated the building’s infrasonic response as a function of frequency for situations where interior doors were both open and …

Models Of Disability And Judicial Interpretation In India, Sanjay Jain Jun 2024

Models Of Disability And Judicial Interpretation In India, Sanjay Jain

Book Chapters

How disability is modeled or understood is determinative in the evolution of both Disability Studies and Disability Politics. By focusing on India, this chapter demonstrates that transformation and metamorphosis in the lives of persons with disabilities is contingent and predicated on the adoption of models to evolve conceptions of disability and disability rights. Upon the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2006 by India, a presumption arose that the Indian legal order embraced the social and Human rights models of disability and that disability was no longer to be viewed through the prism …

The Joint Effects Of Sleep And Pain, And Moderations By Work Characteristics, Christina Xuong Mu Jun 2024

The Joint Effects Of Sleep And Pain, And Moderations By Work Characteristics, Christina Xuong Mu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Reactivity describes interindividual differences in the physiological or emotional responses following an antecedent stressor. For instance, higher stressor reactivity to shorter sleep (i.e., those who report greater stressor severity following shorter-than-usual sleep) and higher negative affective reactivity to stressors (i.e., those who report more negative affect following a stressful event) have worse mental and physical health. Pain reactivity to shorter sleep is a novel concept that describes differences in pain responses following a night of shorter-than-usual sleep. Higher pain reactivity to shorter sleep means that individuals report more pain locations or higher pain severity following shorter-than-usual sleep the previous night, …

Reynolds Creek Critical Zone Observatory Data

Water-rock interactions involving belowground respiratory CO2 in groundwater constitute an understudied portion of the critical zone, which limits our understanding of global carbon cycles. For example, basalt weathering is estimated to sequester approximately 0.21 petagrams of carbon per year (PgC yr-1), which is comparable to other systems (e.g. total terrestrial CO2 sink: 2.9±1 PgC yr-1, riverine fluxes: 0.78 PgC yr-1), however these basalt weathering estimates do not account for processes in deep groundwater. At the Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed (RCEW) and Critical Zone Observatory (CZO), located south of the western Snake River …

Macrophage-Driven Car T Cell Resistance In B Cell Lymphoma, Sae Bom Lee Jun 2024

Macrophage-Driven Car T Cell Resistance In B Cell Lymphoma, Sae Bom Lee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has revolutionized the treatment of patients with relapsed/ refractory large B cell lymphoma (LBCL). Despite its promising efficacy, a subset of patients experiences primary resistance or relapse. In Chapter 2, we explore the tumor microenvironment (TME)-induced resistance mechanisms in patients with LBCL. Analysis of the intratumoral immune infiltrates in pre-infusion tumor biopsies revealed that the levels of immunoregulatory macrophages were elevated in patients who responded poorly to axicabtagene ciloleucel (axi-cel). Using preclinical mouse B cell tumor models, we found that the CAR T-cell-produced interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) enhanced the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS, …

Sargassum In The Florida Keys: Assessment Using High Resolution Remote Sensing, Sarah “Sully” Sullivan Jun 2024

Essays In Climate Finance: Climate Risks In Real Estate And Banking, Vikas Soni

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation includes two essays that examine the impact of climate risks on commercial real estate and bank performance. In the first essay, I study the impact of sea level rise (SLR) on commercial real estate (CRE) pricing and commercial lending. Using novel property level sale transactions from 2011-2018, I find that commercial properties exposed to a 6-feet sea level rise are sold at a 6% discount, which increases over time. This discount appears to be driven by local buyers and buyers’ brokers that are more sensitive to climate risks. In addition, the discount significantly rises after an extreme hurricane, …

Feature selection plays a pivotal role in preprocessing data for machine learning (ML) models. It entails choosing a subset of pertinent features to enhance the model's accuracy and minimize overfitting. Wrapper methods based on metaheuristics are one approach to feature selection, leveraging the predictive accuracy of a learning algorithm to form a condensed set of features. Traditionally, this method uses K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) for maximizing accuracy as its cost function. However, this approach often yields less than optimal results in large sample spaces and demands considerable computational resources. To circumvent the shortcomings of this approach, this work proposes a novel …

Implicitly Normalized Forecaster With Clipping For Linear And Non-Linear Heavy-Tailed Multi-Armed Bandits, Yuriy Dorn, Nikita Kornilov, Nikolay Kutuzov, Alexander Nazin, Eduard Gorbunov, Alexander Gasnikov

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

The Implicitly Normalized Forecaster (INF) algorithm is considered to be an optimal solution for adversarial multi-armed bandit (MAB) problems. However, most of the existing complexity results for INF rely on restrictive assumptions, such as bounded rewards. Recently, a related algorithm was proposed that works for both adversarial and stochastic heavy-tailed MAB settings. However, this algorithm fails to fully exploit the available data. In this paper, we propose a new version of INF called the Implicitly Normalized Forecaster with clipping (INF-clip) for MAB problems with heavy-tailed reward distributions. We establish convergence results under mild assumptions on the rewards distribution and demonstrate …

Reinforcement Learning-Based Dynamic Pruning For Distributed Inference Via Explainable Ai In Healthcare Iot Systems, Emna Baccour, Aiman Erbad, Amr Mohamed, Mounir Hamdi, Mohsen Guizani

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have become the key technique to revolutionize the healthcare sector. However, conducting online remote inference is often impractical due to privacy constraints and latency requirements. To enable local computation, researchers have attempted network pruning with minimal accuracy loss or DNN distribution without affecting the performance. Yet, distributed inference can be inefficient due to the energy overhead and fluctuation of communication channels between participants. On the other hand, given that realistic healthcare systems use pre-trained models, local pruning and retraining relying only on the available scarce data is not possible. Even pre-pruned DNNs are limited in their …

Phosphomannomutase 2 (PMM2) converts mannose-6-phospahate to mannose-1-phosphate; the substrate for GDP-mannose, a building block of the glycosylation biosynthetic pathway. Pathogenic variants in the PMM2 gene have been shown to be associated with protein hypoglycosylation causing PMM2-congenital disorder of glycosylation (PMM2-CDG). While mannose supplementation improves glycosylation in vitro, but not in vivo, we hypothesized that liposomal delivery of mannose-1-phosphate could increase the stability and delivery of the activated sugar to enter the targeted compartments of cells. Thus, we studied the effect of liposome-encapsulated mannose-1-P (GLM101) on global protein glycosylation and on the cellular proteome in skin fibroblasts from individuals with PMM2-CDG, …

Mechanoresponsive Ets1 Causes Endothelial Dysfunction And Arterialization In Varicose Veins Via Notch4/Dll4 Signaling, B. J. Sreelakshmi, C. L. Karthika, S. Ahalya, S. R. Kalpana

Open Access archive

Varicose veins are the most common venous disorder in humans and are characterized by hemodynamic instability due to valvular insufficiency and orthostatic lifestyle factors. It is unclear how changes in biomechanical signals cause aberrant remodeling of the vein wall. Our previous studies suggest that Notch signaling is implicated in varicose vein arterialization. In the arterial system, mechanoresponsive ETS1 is a transcriptional activator of the endothelial Notch, but its involvement in sensing disrupted venous flow and varicose vein formation has not been investigated. Here, we use human varicose veins and cultured human venous endothelial cells to show that disturbed venous shear …
