Chemostratigraphy Of The Mississippian-Age Barnett Formation, Fort Worth Basin, Wise County, Texas Usa, Chizoba Charity Nsianya
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
The Mississippian- age Barnett Formation is a shale-gas system dominated by fine grained clay- to silt -size particles deposited in the Fort Worth Basin, a peripheral foreland basin that formed during the late Paleozoic as a result of continental collision between Laurasia and Gondwana. A detailed assessment of the chemostratigraphy and depositional environment of the Barnett Formation in the northern end of Fort Worth Basin, Texas will be studied using a variety of geochemical methods. One drill core located in the south-eastern part of Wise County (Texas, USA) was scanned at high resolution (~ 2 inch interval) using a hand- …
Optimal Stopping For Markov Modulated Ito-Diffusion With Applications To Finance, Thomas William Seaquist
Optimal Stopping For Markov Modulated Ito-Diffusion With Applications To Finance, Thomas William Seaquist
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
Despite the outstanding success of the Black-Scholes model, it relies on the assumption that drift and volatility of the underlying equity remain constant throughout time. This inaccuracy has motivated a number of interesting and innovative refinements, one of the most natural being Markov modulation. In this dissertation we analyze a variety of financially motivated optimal stopping problems under Markov modulated Ito-Diffusions. In Chapter 3, we generalize and refine a technique developed in [13] pricing an infinite time horizon American put option and we present a rigorous proof of optimality. In Chapter 3 we use this generalized technique to discover an …

A Model Of Short Term Surface Deformation Of Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat Constrained By Gps Geodesy, Erin Elizabeth Mcpherson
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Geodetic surveying is a core volcano monitoring technique. Measurements of how the crust deforms can give valuable insight into the mechanisms and processes that drive an eruption, and the way in which they change (Odbert et al., 2012). Campaign and continuous GPS geodetic measurements on Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat are reported here from 1995 to 2010, spanning three dome growth and repose episodes extending the results of Mattioli et al. (2010). Soufriere Hills Volcano (SHV), Montserrat, in the Lesser Antilles island arc, became active in 1995, and for nearly two decades, geodetic surveys have been conducted using both continuous and …
Mathematical Models Of Nutrient Recycling And Toxin Production In A Gradostat, Xiaoyang Dong
Mathematical Models Of Nutrient Recycling And Toxin Production In A Gradostat, Xiaoyang Dong
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
We discuss several gradostat models in which a microbial population excretes a biochemical that can get recycled back into the system as a nutrient source. Each mathematical model consists of six ordinary differential equations and represents the dynamics of harmful algal blooms in lakes with fringing coves. We examine three different situations of biochemical production which is based on the algal growth rate, mortality, and nutrient concentration, respectively. Local and global stability analysis of the equilibria predicts that algal abundance and biochemical concentration can be both washed out or persistent under different environmental conditions. All theoretical results are supported by …

High Order Numerical Schemes For Pdes And Applications To Cfd, Huankun Fu
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
In the past two decades, many efforts have been made in developing high-order schemes with high resolution, such as compact scheme, essentially non-oscillatory scheme (ENO), weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme (WENO).The present dissertation comprises the analysis and numerical testing of two high order methods. The first one refers to the modification of pseudo spectral method which can be used to partial differential equations(PDEs) with non-periodic boundary conditions. The second one is in high order finite difference class and is the mixing of weighted non-oscillatory scheme and compact scheme (MWCS) with using global weights instead of local ones. Numerical tests are performed …

Effect Of Oil Viscosity Change On Oil Production: Co₂ Enhanced Oil Recovery In The Permian Basin And Potential In The Gabon Basin, Christel Simon Obame Bivegue
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
With most oil fields around the world reaching maturation it is not uncommon for oil companies to investigate the possibility of implementing CO₂ Enhanced Oil Recovery. The injection of CO₂ in a reservoir reduces the oil viscosity within the reservoir, which can later be more easily pushed towards a producing well. Computer simulators such as BOAST NFR are key tools in order to simulate the response of a reservoir to CO₂ EOR and predict oil production. This thesis investigates an example of CO₂ EOR in the Gabon Basin where such technique has yet to be implemented. Oil production has been …

Accurate regulation of glucose metabolism is one of the key factors in keeping a healthy state among mammalians. Increase in failure of this natural blood glucose regulatory mechanism has propelled the research for improvements in blood glucose measurement and its regulation. Also, advancement in the research of internet of things has increased the demand for smart sensors creating a revolution in health care industry and which has inturn led to the improvement in point-of-care testing. Therefore in this thesis work a microneedle glucose sensor is chosen as it can be fabricated by MEMS process which allows it to be easily integrated …
A Study Of Anthropomorphic Figurines In The Neolithic Of Southwest Asia And Southeastern Europe, Carl T. Feagans
A Study Of Anthropomorphic Figurines In The Neolithic Of Southwest Asia And Southeastern Europe, Carl T. Feagans
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
Anthropomorphic figurines resemble people, very often the people who created them. Thus, these figurines stand to provide insight into their cultures perhaps from the perspective of the original members of the culture. Researchers in figurine studies often speculate on the purposes of figurines and attempt to interpret their meanings. This study attempts to examine anthropomorphic figurines of the Neolithic in Southwest Asia and Southeastern Europe through cataloged and compared physical characteristics of the figurines themselves gathered from published data into a relational database. Figurine data are then imported into statistical software for analysis. The data produced in this study support …

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
This thesis demystifies the cultural process of symbolic interpretation and appropriation within contemporary American motorcycle culture by using literature review and cultural analysis to explore the impact and influence of technological and aesthetic developments within a socio-historical context. Several aspects of motorcycle culture are addressed to develop a holistic understanding: the origins of motorcycles from their bicycle counterparts; motorcycles as a gendered phenomenon within American society; the affective experience of motorcycling and relating those affective experiences to the act of constructing one's identity as a motorcyclist; the symbolic appropriation of technological developments within motorcycle culture; how technological developments beyond the …
Community, Solitude, Patriarchy, And Proto-Feminism In The Old English Life Of St. Mary Of Egypt, Jeffrey Pawling Shipnes
Community, Solitude, Patriarchy, And Proto-Feminism In The Old English Life Of St. Mary Of Egypt, Jeffrey Pawling Shipnes
Philosophy & Humanities Theses - Archive
This thesis examines the binaries of community/solitude and patriarchy/proto-feminism in the Old English Life of St. Mary of Egypt. For various reasons scholars such as Hugh Magennis believe that the Old English Life of St. Mary of Egypt, although included in a manuscript of Aelfric's Lives of Saints, was not by Aelfric. I argue that the character of Zosimus in this vita embodies the characteristics of community and patriarchy, which I call the Aelfrician model, and the character of Mary of Egypt embodies the characteristics of solitude and proto-feminism, which I call the non-Aelfrician model. I further argue that these …

In 1986 the founder and President of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCPA), Daniel Elazar, in his address to the Jewish Theological Seminary titled, The Changing Realities of the North American Jewish Community, in consideration of the integration of American Jews, wrote that it "Means more assimilation, more secularization and the acquisition of habits previously considered un-Jewish. This in turn leads to increased intermarriage as a new generation which is culturally less Jewish is at the same time more American and more easily able to find common language with non-Jewish partners of otherwise similar backgrounds". Taken that this was …

This study explores the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and health, and examines how that relationship may be affected in the context of rising income inequality. Using General Social Survey (GSS) data from 1975 to 2010 to perform a series of logistic regressions, this study examines the relationship between health and three common measures of socioeconomic status—household income, education, and occupational prestige—to determine if all three measures of SES are significantly associated with self-rated health when controlling for socio-demographic variables. Full model odds ratios are plotted by year to provide a visual illustration of the change in the association from …
Color-Coding Poverty: Selectivity In Commitments To Individualism And Structuralism Across Various Racial And Ethnic Groups, M. Faye Hanson-Evans
Color-Coding Poverty: Selectivity In Commitments To Individualism And Structuralism Across Various Racial And Ethnic Groups, M. Faye Hanson-Evans
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
It is by now widely understood that a "generic conception of the poor" (Feagin 1975; Robinson 2009; Sigelman and Welch 1994, Wilson 1996) drives the dominant American ideology of individualism. However, research also suggests that beliefs about poverty remained racially contextualized. This study combines multinomial logistic regressions with a content analysis of written comments volunteered by participants within an embedded experiment questionnaire. This research directly contributes to the existing literature by asking what blacks, Latinos, and Asians believe to be the causes of poverty among whites. It also contributes to our knowledge by deepening our understanding of stratification beliefs among …

Use Of A Tri-Axial Accelerometer, Behavioral Observation, And Gps To Monitor The Activity Of Female Asian Elephants In A Zoo, Karen Sloane Soulsby
Biology Theses - Archive
Wild elephants spend approximately 90% of their day actively foraging. Reduced activity in captive elephants may increase the risk of obesity and the formation of stereotypical behaviors. In order to evaluate and enhance strategies for managing elephants in captivity, new methods to quantify elephant activity are needed. GPS has been used to measure distances walked during the day in captive elephants. An accelerometer may also be a useful tool for quantifying elephant activity including recording specific behavior patterns without the need for constant observation. In this study, tri-axial accelerometers were tested for measurements of total activity, distances traveled, and activity …

Novel Methods For Entity-Centric Information Exploration, Ning Yan
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
We witness an unprecedented proliferation of entity graphs that capture entities (e.g., persons, products, organizations) and their relationships. Such entity data gradually evolves into the most comprehensive knowledge graph ever built by human beings. The flourish of entity data also boosts a growing demand for entity-centric information exploration tasks. Different from traditional information retrieval tasks that are based on statistics of text terms, entity-centric information exploration tasks are usually based on metrics over entities, their relationships, or graph structures. In this work, we identified two essential tasks in entity-centric information exploration: 1) how to do faceted navigation over a set …

Development Of New Stationary Phases And Their Applications In High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Haixiao Qiu
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has proven to be the most widely applicable and versatile technique in separation science. Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) has attracted considerable interest and has become a viable option for the separation of polar compounds. Chirality is another major concern in the modern pharmaceutical industry for two reasons: 1). the majority of bio-organic molecules are chiral; 2). enantiomers of a racemic drug may often exhibit different biological activities, pharmacokinetics, and toxicities. The field of enantiomeric separations has reached a clear level of maturity after approximately 30 years of development. However, with the continued emphasis on …

Examining Ruthenium Chromophores For The Photochemical Reduction Of Co₂To Methanol, David J. Boston
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Our consumption of energy for transportation and electricity has been growing as quickly as our population. As this demand for energy increases we increase our production of carbon dioxide by the burning of fossil fuels to try and meet this increasing demand. A sustainable method to convert carbon dioxide (CO₂) to a viable liquid fuel is one potential way in which both the increasing energy demand and increasing CO₂ concentration issues can both be helped. Currently such methods being investigated include thermal, electrochemical, and photochemical processes. Because thermal conversion is not an ideal situation because of the requirement of strong …

Advanced Combinatorial Testing Algorithms And Applications, Linbin Yu
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Combinatorial testing (CT) has been shown to be a very effective testing strategy. Given a system with n parameters, t-way combinatorial testing, where t is typically much smaller than n, requires that all t-way combinations, i.e., all combinations involving any t parameter values, be covered by at least one test. This dissertation focuses on two important problems in combinatorial testing, including constrained test generation and combinatorial sequence testing. For the first problem, we focus on constraint handling during combinatorial test generation. Constraints over input parameters are restrictions that must be satisfied in order for a test to be valid. Constraints can …

Investor Overconfidence And Option Trading, Han-Sheng Chen
Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive
This study examines investor overconfidence theory in the options market. The theory suggests that investors who experience high returns become overconfident in their security valuation and trading skills, and therefore trade more often, even when the high returns are market wide. Given stock investors often trade in both stock and options market, I hypothesize similar patterns could be found in the options market as well. Controlling for market volatility and stock idiosyncratic risk, past market return is positively correlated with option trading turnover. In addition, past positive market return leads to higher call option turnover ratio and higher call-to-put ratio. …

Combinatorial testing, which has been shown very effective in fault detection, is a testing strategy that applies the theory of combinatorial design to test software programs. Given a program under test with k parameters, t-way combinatorial testing requires all combinations of values of t (out of k) parameters be covered at least once, where t is usually a small integer. Combinatorial testing can significantly reduce the cost of testing while increasing its effectiveness.Input space modeling is an important step in combinatorial testing. The input space of a subject program must be modeled before combinatorial testing can be applied to it. …

Predicting the volume change behavior of expansive soils has been a major challenge to the engineers in the past few years, due to the intricate couple effects caused by different soil composition parameters toward swelling. Hence, the behavior of an expansive soil is better understood with its inherent composition parameters. For this research, eight natural expansive clays have been sampled from different active swell zones across The United States. Basic soil classification was performed on these soil to identify the high plasticity and low plasticity clays. The swell behavior of these clays are studied using different testing methods and initial …

Business Administration Dissertations - Archive
As many organizations are unable to alter existing accounting systems for an Activity Based-type costing requirement, a "Dashboard" Costing Model is proposed. The model will 1) empirically verify management assumptions regarding actual Supply Chain costs, 2) satisfy management's objectives for acceptable accuracy and simplicity and 3) contribute to the current body of research by providing alternative methods of estimating Supply Chain costs within the Transaction Cost Economics framework. Future studies can expand upon this costing methodology, and test its applicability with other organizations in other industries for accuracy improvement and refinement.

Investing In England: The Designation Of Heirs To The Crown Throughout English History, Sarah Stevenson Sadullaeva
History Theses - Archive
It was not until the late eighteenth century that rules for succession to the English throne were written. Succession to the throne has never been random. As such, the heir to the throne plays an important part in the history of England. The heir was the personification of the future of England and signified stability, dynastic continuity and power. This study examines the designation of the heirs from the oath received by William of Normandy, which justified the conquest of 1066, to the current Prince of Wales, Charles, investiture in 1969. In reviewing the methods and reasons for designating an …

Much of the scholarly research on African American midwifery in the Jim Crow South has been focused on the traditionally prestigious role of lay midwives, and the way in which these women were forced into obsolescence by the politically powerful medical profession. However, little has been written about the type of care they provided, or how midwifery and maternity care evolved under the increasing presence of local and federal health care structures. Using evidence from the nursing, medical, and public health journals of the era, as well as the personal memoirs of lay midwives, this study provides a new perspective …
