Design And Synthesis Of Flavin-Based Organocatalysts For Biomimetic Aerobic Oxidation Reactions, Shuai Chen

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Oxidation reactions are among the most costly and least selective transformations in synthetic chemistry. Catalytic methods that utilize O₂ as a terminal oxidant strive to reduce the inefficiency in this large area of synthesis. Recent efforts have been aimed primarily at metal-/organometallic- or enzyme-catalyzed transformations. The goal of the research described in this dissertation was to develop organocatalytic systems based on natural biosynthetic catalysts in order to develop selective metal-free aerobic oxidations that function at room temperature. Prior to our work, riboflavin mimics were previously investigated to understand flavoenzyme function and to perform catalytic oxidations of primarily heteroatom systems. We …

Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education Scholarship and Creative Works

Reports suggest children with high aerobic fitness (VO2max; mL/kg/min) have healthier profiles of TNF-α and IL-6; however, research has not accounted for differences in adiposity between high-fit and low-fit individuals. Thus, this study examined differences in inflammatory markers of obese and normal weight children of different fitness levels, using two different VO2max units: per unit of fat free mass (VO2FFM) or total body mass (VO2kg). Children (n = 124; ages 8-12) were divided into four matched groups; normal weight high-fit (NH), normal weight lowfit (NL), obese high-fit (OH), and obese low-fit (OL). Height, weight, skinfolds, body mass index (BMI), and …

The News We Use: A Mixed Methods Analysis Of Cable News Media Polarization, Stephen Lott

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

The 2012 election is done and the dust has settled, but one cannot overlook the fact that the ever-widening gap between our two main political parties' ideologies and platforms has made it substantially harder for independents and moderates to find their place in the field of politics. The cable news media are complicit in this polarization process by reducing coherent and productive discourse on the issues to ignorant shouting matches between "conservative" republicans and "liberal" democrats, leaving no room for informed discussion or compromise. The 2012 election coverage is a near perfect example of this process, as it was a …

Chemoelastoplastic Analysis Of A Copper-Graded Silicon Nanorod For Lithium-Ion Battery Anode Application, Chao Ji Jan 2013

Chemoelastoplastic Analysis Of A Copper-Graded Silicon Nanorod For Lithium-Ion Battery Anode Application, Chao Ji

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Lithium-ion batteries are currently widely used in electronics, electrical vehicles and other devices/machines. Along with the mounting demand for much improved performance in these developing technological fields, silicon was recognized to possess much higher energy capacity when used as an anode than graphite that is currently used. However, there occurs colossal volume expansion of silicon anode during the lithiation process. The material consequently suffers enormous stresses, especially, at the interface with a current collector, which deteriorate the device quickly during cycling. To prevent the active material (Si) from falling off from a current collector, nanoengineering strategies have been suggested, including …

Thermal Management Method For Foil Bearings In Turbine Hot Section, Tejas Devidas Patil Jan 2013

Thermal Management Method For Foil Bearings In Turbine Hot Section, Tejas Devidas Patil

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Recently, Air Foil Bearings (AFB) are gaining higher industrial acceptance in micro-turbo machinery. AFB show high speed operating capability and environmental friendly operation in comparison to rolling element bearings. Utilization of ambient air as a lubricant eliminates maintenance of a pressurized oil lubricating system. AFBs are therefore a feasible alternative to oil lubricated bearings in small machines. High speed operation results in thermal management issues which can be solved through a suitable cooling mechanism. Axial cooling by passing air through bearing support structure (called bump foils) is the most commonly used. In this method, cooling is achieved in the heat …

Predicting Fracture Density In The Eagle Ford (Boquillas) Formation, Val Verde Basin, Texas, Sean Kimiagar Jan 2013

Predicting Fracture Density In The Eagle Ford (Boquillas) Formation, Val Verde Basin, Texas, Sean Kimiagar

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

Fracture density in hydrocarbon reservoirs is an important variable for efficient production of oil and gas in tight reservoirs. Fracture density is the fracture surface area per unit of volume, and the higher the reservoir fracture density, the higher its recovery factor. Being able to estimate the induced fracture density in advance of hydraulic fracturing will therefore help increase the knowledge of the reservoir and production efficiency. Theoretical considerations indicate that fracture density is related to strain energy. The purpose of this study is to verify the hypothesis that fracture density can be predicted under constant strain conditions using the …

Repeated Decision-Making With High And Low Affect For Monetary And Social Resources, Patrick A. Ramirez

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

This research was a continuation of studies that considered the role of affect for repeated decision-making under two different conditions while maintaining similar magnitudes of gains and losses. For the two situations the resources at risk (life versus money) are deemed to be high or low in affect. These designations are relevant because past findings have shown systematic deviation in choices on single-shot or one time gambles for resources based on levels of affect associated with the potential prize. This research considers possible ceiling effects in self reports about pleasure and displeasure and considers behavior assessments of negative affect as …

Measuring Corporate Social Responsibility Through Organizational Values: A Scale Validation Study, Adria D. Toliver Jan 2013

Measuring Corporate Social Responsibility Through Organizational Values: A Scale Validation Study, Adria D. Toliver

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

There is increasing interest in corporate social responsibility among researchers and practitioners. The corporate social responsibility construct has been around for several decades, but recent public corporate scandals have brought corporate social responsibility back to the forefront of many discussions. The most prominent conceptualization of corporate social responsibility suggests that an organization has economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic responsibilities to fulfill (Carroll, 1979). The problem with current models of corporate social responsibility is that they are skewed towards the financial responsibility of an organization. Although this is one important aspect of an organization's responsibilities, it is not the only or …
