Cooperative Control Of Multi-Agent Systems; Stability, Optimality And Robustness, Kristian Hengster Movric
Cooperative Control Of Multi-Agent Systems; Stability, Optimality And Robustness, Kristian Hengster Movric
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
In this work design methods are given for distributed synchronization control of multi-agent systems on directed communication graphs. Conditions are derived based on the relation of the graph eigenvalues to a region in a complex plane that depends on the single-agent system and the solution of the local Riccati equation. The synchronizing region concept is used. Cooperative observer design, guaranteeing convergence of the local estimates to their true values, is also proposed. The notion of convergence region for distributed observers is introduced. A duality principle is shown to hold for distributed observers and controllers on balanced graph topologies. Application of …
Dovetail: Stronger Anonymity In Next-Generation Internet Routing, Jody Mark Sankey
Dovetail: Stronger Anonymity In Next-Generation Internet Routing, Jody Mark Sankey
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Current low-latency anonymity systems use complex overlay networks to conceal a user's IP address, introducing significant latency and network efficiency penalties compared to normal Internet usage. Rather than this obfuscation of network identity through higher level protocols, we recommend a more direct solution: a routing protocol that allows communication without exposing network identity, providing a strong foundation for Internet privacy, while allowing identity to be defined in those higher level protocols where it adds value. We propose Dovetail, a next-generation Internet routing protocol that provides anonymity against an active attacker located at any single point within the network. Key design …

Lilac: Architecture For Anonymous Light Weight Communication, Ankit Upadhyaya
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
We present lilac; a circuit based low latency anonymous light weight instant messaging communication system. This browser based chat platform provides anonymity in context with unlinkability and unobservability for the secured real-time communication. The system uses a relay based anonymization mechanism where circuits are built and routed over a set of trusted nodes in the network. Unlike other typical instant messaging systems, Lilac uses user pseudonymity and ephemeral message exchange, which eliminates conventional user registration and storing the messages for the future retrieval; this leaves no footprints behind in the system in terms of user information, who talks to whom …
Modeling An Intelligent Intruder In A Region Monitored By A Wireless Sensor Network, Sriram Srinivasan
Modeling An Intelligent Intruder In A Region Monitored By A Wireless Sensor Network, Sriram Srinivasan
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Monitoring to detect unauthorized border crossing is very important for protecting national security. To accomplish this by continuous physical monitoring by border patrol agents is impractical. Networks of low-cost wireless sensors have been identified as a useful tool in monitoring with minimal human intervention. However, ensuring the effectiveness of unattended monitoring against an intelligent intruder is difficult, since the intruder can probe the system for weaknesses. To better understand the capabilities of such an intruder, we propose a model for an intelligent intruder whose purpose is to find a detection-free path across the border by which he could cross back …

Effective Collaboration In Opportunitic Networks, Umair Sadiq
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Opportunistic networks formed by users' mobile devices have the potential to exploit a rich set of distributed service components that can be composed to provide each user with a multitude of application level services. In opportunistic networks, tasks such as content sharing and service execution among remote devices are facilitated by intermediate devices capable of short–range wireless connectivity, also called relays that receive, move around, and forward the data.To enable effective collaboration in such an environment, we make three novel contributions: (i) an adaptive forwarding scheme, ProxiMol, to select suitable relays for data transfer; (ii) a distributed mechanism to select …

Sparsity Enhanced Reconstruction Algorithms For Diffuse Optical Tomography, Jixing Yao
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Conventional reconstruction algorithms for diffuse optical tomography (DOT) is based on Tikhonov regularization method and the simple white Gaussian noise (WGN) assumption. These approaches usually lead to the following problems: 1. The reconstructed images are blurry; 2. In 3D reconstruction problems, the reconstructed objects are usually in the wrong depths; 3. The shape of a reconstructed object might be different from its original one due to the noise. In this work, after study the nature of DOT images as well as the data acquisition process, several sparsity regularization related reconstruction methods were developed to improve the spatial resolution as well as …

Diabetes is disorder associated with an insufficiency of insulin secretion. Large number of people around the world suffers from this disorder which can result into damages to eyes, kidneys, nerves and even death. One of the most common methods to detect the diabetes is to monitor the levels of glucose is the blood stream. Other biological fluids like tear fluid can also be used to detect levels of glucose. With emergence of MEMS technology several biosensors are developed, less invasive or non-invasive, which can detect these glucose levels from blood or tear. Central idea behind the developments of these biosensors …

Without short-term memory, people would have little hope to learn and accomplish tasks. The same can be said for artificially intelligent agents. Often referred as Miller's Law, the number of working objects that a human can hold in working memory is around seven. For an AI agent, the cost of keeping additional memory blocks is exponential. Other issues to consider are what to keep in memory and for how long. Only a few of many of an agent's previous steps may be important to hold on to. This thesis project attempts to train an intelligent agent to learn what to …

The Heir And The Spare: Education And Preparation Among England's "Sudden Monarchs", Lindsay Ridlehuber
History Theses - Archive
The English royal family is experiencing a recent surge of popularity. Though they no longer personally govern England, their role is still crucial within the country. The current heir to the throne, Prince Charles, is expected to inherit peacefully upon the death of Elizabeth II. However, there has been speculation that he could be passed over for his far more popular son Prince William. If this does occur, it will not be the first time that a monarch who was not the primary heir inherited the English throne. Eight times in the period between 1100 and 1701 the primary heir …

"God Help Us, We Are The Press!": Public Perception Of The Branch Davidian Conflict, Janet Rogers
History Theses - Archive
Public perception of the 1993 Branch Davidian conflict, particularly as it developed well after the event, helped to alter government policy toward New Religious Movements. Prior to the investigations following the conflict, public expectations of government involvement in New Religious Movements had been shaped most dramatically by the mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana, in 1978. That event had convinced scholars and the public at large that New Religious movements had a propensity for violence, and government intervention was necessary on occasion. Thus following Jonestown, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) became involved in several standoffs with New Religious …

Gastric electrical stimulation (GES) has attracted significant attention in the treatment for Gastroparesis-a common disorder caused in patients suffering from diabetes, cancer and Parkinson's disease. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, abdominal bloating etc. due to loss of motility in the stomach muscles. GES uses electrical pulses on the stomach tissues to help regain normal motility and reduce the symptoms. Conventional gastric stimulator needs a long surgery to be implanted and it is a big pacemaker like device that runs by a non-rechargeable battery. It has to be replaced once the battery gets exhausted every 5 to 6 years. Hence another round …

Environmental pollution causes ongoing problems. Many countries are faced with the dilemma of finding alternative energy sources that are cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Biofuels have received much attention of late as potential alternative fuels. Although biofuels are indeed attractive energy sources, their manufacturing also brings environmental pollution. One of the most prominent biofuels is ethanol. In the US, the main feedstock for ethanol manufacturing is corn. In Brazil, as well as in some other countries, the main raw material is sugarcane. Although ethanol presents many advantages as a biofuel, including the fact that it is manufactured from renewable resources, there …

Morphology, Mechanisms, And Processes For The Formation Of A Non-Bifurcating Fluvial-Deltaic Channel Prograding Into Grapevine Reservoir, Texas, Gary D. Tomanka
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Non-bifurcating channels in modern reservoirs, tie channels, and the Mississippi River Bird-Foot Delta share a common morphology that is likely due to an underlying common mechanism. Data analysis indicates that the Denton Creek Delta has prograded into Grapevine Reservoir for 56 years, adhering to the buried pre-impoundment channel without alteration. The hydrodynamic mechanism that controls this adherence is that of a turbulent jet. The properties of the turbulent jet create a dynamic two-phase process, whereby prodelta clays and rare mouth bar sands are eroded while the jet contemporaneously builds sandy levees. An upward tapering channel acts to focus and intensify …

Decreasing the attrition rate of nursing students has become an important issue for programs in Texas as a means to alleviate the nursing shortage (THECB, 2009). Programs are admitting a more diverse group of students but attrition has historically been high among minority groups (Gilchrist & Rector, 2007). The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between English as a Second Language (ESL), a reading comprehension program, and attrition rates of nursing students. A secondary analysis of a large database which included nursing students from 27 initial licensure programs in Texas was completed. Jeffreys (2012) NURS model was …

Point Modules Over Regular Graded Skew Clifford Algebras, Padmini Pillay Veerapen
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
In this thesis, I consider point modules over regular graded skew Clifford algebras.First, I define a notion of rank (called μ-rank) on noncommutative quadratic forms. To every (commutative) quadratic form is associated a symmetric matrix, and one has the standard notions of rank and determinant function defined on the matrix, and, thus, on the quadratic form. In 2010, in [15], the notion of quadratic form was extended to the noncommutative setting and a one-to-one correspondence was established between these quadratic forms and certain matrices. Using this generalization, I define a notion of rank (called μ-rank) for such noncommutative quadratic forms, …

The Arlington Archosaur Site (AAS) is a North Texas fossil locality that preserves a Mid- Cretaceous ecosystem along a low lying coastal plain. The site lies within the Cenomanian (95 Mya) rocks of the Woodbine Formation in North Arlington, Tarrant County, TX. The depositional environment of the AAS is a coastal delta plain, principally a peat bog. The vertebrates recovered from the AAS include dinosauria (ornithopod and theropod), crocodyliform, chelonian and dipnoan. A large, nearly complete crocodyliform was excavated in the summer of 2009, and proved to be a new taxon; Deltasuchus motherali. The name of the new taxon was …
Reducing Pb Bioaccessibility In Soil Through The Addition Of Apatite Ii, Zachary Robert Tondre
Reducing Pb Bioaccessibility In Soil Through The Addition Of Apatite Ii, Zachary Robert Tondre
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
This study was an investigation of the bioaccessibility of Pb in the presence of phosphate acting as an immobilizing constituent in the form of fish bone material, specifically Apatite II. Phosphate-induced Pb immobilization refers to the process by which Pb ions replace calcium ions and form insoluble Pb-phosphate. A commercially available A-horizon soil was spiked with dried Pb-bearing paint containing various Pb forms (e.g., carbonates, sulfates, and oxides). The paints were added to the soil at 2% weight for weight (w/w). The paints (in solid form) were initially ground and sieved through a <100 micron mesh to provide a <100 μm size fraction. Once a paint was mixed with a soil, typically in duplicate, replicates were either retained or further amended with Apatite II. Soil columns were created using a series of 250 mL syringes individually filled with each paint spiked soil sample, some of which were amended with Apatite II at 5% w/w. For six months the columns were eluted regularly with Milli-Q water and at six months, subsamples were removed from the top of each soil column in order to evaluate any change in potential bioaccessibility of the Pb associated with soil. Thus, this work focuses on the bioaccessibility of Pb in a group of soil column samples based on the weak acid solubility of the Pb in the soil, and on an electron microscopic analysis of the Pb in the soils. Each soil column sample was subjected to an in vitro relative bioaccessibility assessment (RBA), in which a simulated gastric fluid (SGF) was used to simulate and project the effects of digestion on the Pb contaminated soils. The SGF was intended to mimic the acidic quality of the human stomach and yields approximate results of how much Pb could potentially be released into the acid solution through human digestion. The SGF solution was essentially composed of hydrochloric acid (HCL) adjusted to a pH of 2.5. From the soil columns, 3g of soil were removed and 1g was added to 100 mL of SGF and then tumbled for 1 hour at 37°C in a modified toxicity characteristic leaching procedure system. After this time a sample of the fluid was collected an the amount of Pb in the fluid was measured. Photomicrographs of each soil column were obtained using a scanning electron microscope with a back-scattered electron detector and an energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer. These digital images were used to determine the chemical nature of various Pb-bearing constituents within each soil sample. This study concluded that the addition of Apatite II led to a reduction in the bioaccessibility of Pb in some of the test soils, determined through differences in in vitro RBA and through the recognition of Pb-phosphate particle phases in the soil samples. Previous studies have found that the addition of Apatite II as a remediation technique for Pb contaminated soil can be successful, however this is the first time that Pb contamination of the soil has been in the form of Pb-bearing paint. Furthermore, this study is notable for identifying changes in Pb bioaccessibility of Pb derived from Pb-bearing paint over the short time-span of six months.

Low adherence to medications in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) results in relapses and subsequently increased healthcare costs, poor quality of life, and increased comorbidities. In this correlational study, treatment complexity and beliefs in medications were tested to determine if they are predictors of medication adherence. Through convenience sampling, participants were recruited through face book, IBD organizations, and foundation websites (n = 369 final sample size). Females comprised the overwhelming majority (81.8%) of the sample. Using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale, approximately 56% were classified as nonadherent and 44% as adherent. Beliefs in medications were measured by four subscales: …

All living organisms reproduce and age. These are the two basic facets of life, but in many aspects poorly understood. The majority of the species are male/female. The proportion of genders in population can vary significantly among animals and plants, but the mechanisms and evolutionary reasons for such variation are poorly understood. In some species of nematode (roundworm) parasites, for example, only female progeny is generated after a cross between a male and female. To understand how gender-ratio distortion happens and how it evolved, we are using a non-parasitic nematode that can be cultured in the laboratory, but that is …
