The accreting collapsed object GRO J1655-40 could contain the gravitomagnetic monopole (GMM), and it was shown to be better described by the Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) spacetime instead of the Kerr spacetime. The warped accretion disk has also been observed for the same collapsed object. Motivated by these, we study a tilted thin inner accretion disk around a KTN black hole. Such a tilting could have a significant effect on the X-ray spectral and timing features via the Lense-Thirring effect. Taking into account the contribution from the inner accretion disk for the KTN black hole, here we calculate the radial profile of …

Adaptation to hypothermia is important for skeletal muscle cells under physiological stress and is used for therapeutic hypothermia (mild hypothermia at 32 °C). We show that hypothermic preconditioning at 32 °C for 72 hours improves the differentiation of skeletal muscle myoblasts using both C2C12 and primary myoblasts isolated from 3 month and 18-month-old mice. We analyzed the cold-shock proteome of myoblasts exposed to hypothermia (32 °C for 6 and 48 h) and identified significant changes in pathways related to RNA processing and central carbon, fatty acid, and redox metabolism. The analysis revealed that levels of the cold-shock protein RBM3, an …

Bricks are manufactured using clays, which are fired at temperatures ranging from 1000 to 1200 °C. Due to the lack of quality clay, it is necessary to find alternate soils and waste materials for manufacturing bricks. The use of agricultural, aqua-cultural, and industrial wastes in the manufacturing of construction bricks leads to low-carbon material. This addresses the problem of agro-aqua-industrial waste disposal. The present study focuses on the utilization of biomass (BM) and slaked seashell powder (SSP) in compressed soil bricks made with locally available lithomargic soil (LS). The proposed soil bricks are prepared with 85% processed lithomargic soil, 12.5% …

The acetylation of proteins' N-terminal amino groups by the N-acetyltransferase complexes plays a crucial role in modulating the spatial stability and functional activities of diverse human proteins. Mutations disrupting the stability and function of NAA10 result in X-linked rare genetic disorders. In this study, we conducted a global analysis of the impact of fifteen disease-associated missense mutations in NAA10. The analyses revealed that mutations in specific residues, such as Y43, V107, V111, and F128, predictably disrupted interactions essential for NAA10 stability, while most mutations (except R79C, A111W, Q129P, and N178K) expectedly led to structural destabilization. Mutations in many conserved residues …

Asenapine maleate (ASPM) is a second-generation atypical antipsychotic that is approved for treating acute schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults by the US FDA. The major downside of ASPM therapy is rapid, extensive first-pass hepatic metabolism following its oral administration with a very low oral bioavailability of < 2%. In this work, we developed ASPM nanoformulations conjugated with ligands such as arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) and peptide dendrimers (PDs) with the intention of improving the oral bioavailability of the drug by targeting it to the intestinal lymphatic system (ILS). Peptide dendrimers (PDs), both lipidated and nonlipidated, were synthesized by Fmoc solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS). Reverse phase high performance chromatography (RP-HPLC) was used to purify the synthesized PDs, and the PDs were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI+-MS), Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The thin film hydration method was used to prepare liposomes, and the process variables affecting the liposome parameters were optimized using the Box‒Behnken design (BBD).Liposomes were PEGylated using DSPE-PEG-COOH2000 and further conjugated with ligands (RGD, PD-1 and PD-2) using EDC-NHS chemistry. …

Increasing of plastic waste threatening ecosystems globally, this experimental work investigates recycled plastics as sustainable aggregate replacements in pervious concrete. Pervious concrete allows water passage but has installation/maintenance difficulty due to high weight. This research addresses the lack of eco-friendly lightweight pervious solutions by assessing physical and mechanical performance of mixes with 100% recycled plastic and traditional aggregate percentages. Density reduced 12% using a 100% plastic aggregate mix, achieving 1358 kg/m3 with compressive strength of 3.92 MPa, adequate for non-structural applications. A 7.8% decrease in water absorption versus conventional pervious concrete signifies retained porosity and permeability despite the plastic …

Cancer cells require energy to carry out essential tasks, grow, and survive, like all other body cells. The pathophysiological process of cancer is a complex one. The cytotoxicity, lack of selectivity, generation of multidrug resistance, and proliferation of stem-like cells are some of the issues facing current chemotherapy. To this end, nanoconstructs with unique inherent properties, including optical, magnetic, and electrical, with a desired nano range (<100 nm), have shown remarkable applications. There are numerous significant categories into which nanomaterials employed in cancer therapy can be divided. These nanomaterials, which target the immune system, tumour microenvironment, and cancer cells, have been modified for various cancer therapies to improve drug capacity and bioavailability, reduce toxicity, and improve specificity. The distinct bioactivities of inorganic metallic NPs include silver (Ag), gold (Au), cerium (Ce), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), titanium (Ti), platinum (Pt) and zinc (Zn), giving them a prominent position among other NPs. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), particularly, have garnered attention due to their unique pharmacological properties. As an essential trace element, Se forms the active site in selenoproteins like selenocysteine (Sec), which regulates the physiological redox balance through its oxidoreductase activity. SeNPs have emerged as promising therapeutic agents in recent decades due to their reduced toxicity compared to Se, which has a narrow therapeutic window. SeNPs also exhibit synergistic effects with the therapeutic cargo, enhancing the anticancer activity. In this review, we have discussed the pharmacological effects of SeNPs, their pharmacological protective role against inflammation and oxidative stress-mediated conditions, and the latest advances in their synthesis and functionalization, utilized in cancer medication delivery systems, targeted drug delivery systems and gene delivery systems. In addition, we present an update on the most recent reported preclinical research involving the utilization of SeNPs in cancer treatment.

Background: Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are among the most challenging conditions to accurately diagnose in children, and many TBIs are underdiagnosed. Patients with maxillofacial injury may be at risk for TBI. The objective of this study was to analyse the association between maxillofacial injuries and TBI among paediatric patients. Analysis of the factors associated with the occurrence of TBI among paediatric patients with maxillofacial injuries was the secondary objective. Method: This case-control study included 192 cases defined as paediatric patients with maxillofacial injuries and 192 controls defined as all paediatric patients with traumatic injuries to other body locations and with …

Background: Pneumonia remains a significant global health concern, particularly among those requiring admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). Despite the availability of international guidelines, there remains heterogeneity in clinical management. The D-PRISM study aimed to develop a global overview of how pneumonias (i.e., community-acquired (CAP), hospital-acquired (HAP), and Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP)) are diagnosed and treated in the ICU and compare differences in clinical practice worldwide. Methods: The D-PRISM study was a multinational, survey-based investigation to assess the diagnosis and treatment of pneumonia in the ICU. A self-administered online questionnaire was distributed to intensive care clinicians from 72 countries between …

There is a preexisting overlap of myth and fairytale, queer representation, and animated film. Many of the earliest animated films were adaptations of fairy tales, and those adaptations often included queer-coded villains. This is usually where the combination of all three of these elements ends, often falling short of meaningful representation (Baker, 2010). Fairytale and animation are synonymous in our modern cultural understanding (Holiday and Sergeant, 2018) after all, the first full length animated feature film was an adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). Queer representation within the fairytale and mythology genre is not a new area …

Fear and anxiety are mundane and innately human experiences, and ones that everyone struggles with on occasion. However, approximately a third to a quarter of all adults will suffer from clinical anxiety disorders at some point in their lives. Of these, many will go undiagnosed, and of those that do, only a fraction receive proper treatment.
