Stem Respiration Of Black Spruce (Picea Mariana), Interior Alaska, Yongwon Kim, S.-D. Kim

This stem respiration, that is equipped with a control system that consists of data-logger (CR10X), NDIR CO2 analyzer, and pump, a compressor, and seven stem chambers, was conducted in parallel with the flux-measurement of soil respiration in different-sized black spruce of 4.3 cm to 13.5 cm in DBH (diameter at breast height), interior Alaska during the growing season of 2007 to 2009. The average stem respirations were 0.011±0.005 mgCO2/m3/s (range 0.005±0.002 to 0.015±0.008 mgCO2/m3/s, CV 45%) in black spruce forests, which the DBH (Diameter at Breast Height) of black spruce ranges from 4.3 to 13.5 cm. I began working at Booth Library in February 2011 as liaison librarian for the Biological Sciences and Chemistry departments. Prior to my arrival, faculty of these departments had not been interacting actively with the library, and students from these departments had not been receiving library instruction geared toward their field of study. Considering discussions I had in library school and following suggestions from my fellow librarians, I created an action plan to introduce myself to these departments.

Today’s first year college students arrive on campus underprepared for the academic demands that await them. Despite the dedicated efforts of high school librarians, research continues to illustrate that students lack basic information literacy skills crucial to their academic success in higher education. In this session high school and academic librarians will explore this issue with participants to identify key deficits in students’ 21st Century Skills.

The presenters will share their insights on college professors’ expectations and offer best practices for educating tomorrow’s college students. Presenters will provide ideas for lesson plans and assessment; actual college assignments will be shared.

This workshop discusses various ways to directly engage student patrons for outreach and programming purposes, while eliminating post-secondary administration red-tape that could hinder establishment of this programming. The presenters illustrate ways to delegate to certain students creation and promotion of library-related content for consumption by the rest of the campus community. The Nghe-Tinh Soviets of 1930-1931, a rebellion against colonial authority in north-central and central colonial Vietnam, has received extensive analysis by a variety of commentators and scholars, both Vietnamese and not. Most scholars, Vietnam and internationally, settled on some view of immiseration combined with the presence of pro-communist organizers as the motive forces for the rebellion, but a few have favored questions of political dissatisfaction and local empowerment as underlying motivations for revolt. Until recently, examining the rebellion on a gross scale in order to test either theory has proven difficult, with a surfeit of information but no easy way …

The issue of Social tourism (the title of which is a much contested term) has been on the European agenda for a number of years. In Ireland, while there is a multitude of Social tourism provision there is little or no recognition for it at an official level, with the largest share of provision being at the voluntary / NGO level. This presentation describes the process and difficulties of developing a collaborative working relationship with Stephen C. Stanko, a man currently serving two death sentences in South Carolina for the murders of two people and the sexual assault and attempted murder of a third. Mr. Stanko and Dr. Gordon Crews first worked together on a book from 2000-2004 when Stanko was serving a 10-year sentence for kidnapping and assault with intent to kill. In April 2005, only 8 months after Stanko was released from that sentence, he committed the crimes for which he is currently facing death. Since then, the Crews’ …

National Louis University (NLU) provides access to local collections through an Institutional Repository and Special Collections and Archives digital collections. We use open access as an effective and value-added method for contributing to scholarship and outreach to different communities, including alumni. As NLU celebrates our 125th anniversary this year, we utilize digital collections to promote and provide access to our unique history. This presentation will discuss materials selected for inclusion and the multiple ways open access collections can contribute to a university's scholarship and reputation.

In recent years, an unsustainable economic model has emerged in many academic libraries—skyrocketing journal subscription costs coupled with diminishing materials budgets. What if vendor prices for journal subscriptions rise so fast that our budgets just can’t keep pace? Could we continue to meet the needs of our patrons if we had to cut EBSCO and other expensive aggregator databases? And for those of us charged with teaching good research skills, how would instruction change? In this interactive session we will tackle the above questions, present some open source alternatives to subscription databases, and discuss “vendor-free” information literacy instruction.
