Relationship Of Maternal Flow Environment To Offspring Size In Botrylloides Violaceus, Damion J. Delton, Sarah Cohen

Colonial botryllid tunicates, such as Botrylloides violaceus, brood large, non-feeding offspring with extremely limited larval life spans of minutes to perhaps one day. Despite the importance of this transitory life history stage, there is little information on how environmental factors such as ambient water flow affect larval size among invertebrates. Since adult tunicates feed by filtering particles from the water flowing around the siphons, we reasoned that colonies of B. violaceus in high water flow may produce larger offspring due to greater food availability. My colleagues and I assessed the workflow for data ingest at the Odum Archive at the University of North Carolina. We then made recommendations based on our analysis of the system. This poster discusses the most important recommendation that we gave the staff of the archive. We suggested that they create a script which would automate the steps in the workflow that involve a single point of failure. With the script, the single point of failure remains, but the risk of error has been significantly lessened.

Meeting your customers where they are has taken on a whole new meaning in the 2010s. Join Amy Vecchione, of Boise State University, and Tobie Garrick, of Boise Public Library, as they explore ways to provide improved reference outcomes for customers through mobile technology. Each librarian has implemented new reference tools for customers including: connecting users to reference tools with QR (Quick Response) codes, roving reference with mobile devices, SMS reference, and mobile database instruction during the reference process. Participants will learn about barriers, how each librarian overcame them, and how mobile reference can be improved.

As many librarians learned in last year's AALL presentation on facilitation, a well-facilitated meeting can transform a regular work session into an extraordinarily productive event. Participants learned that a well-crafted agenda, thoughtful ground rules, optimal meeting space, and detailed minutes can all set the stage for a successful meeting.

However, meetings can still go awry. A poorly facilitated meeting can make everyone dread meetings even if the meeting has been well-planned. The goal of this study was to analyze sugar-sweetened beverage tax policy as one strategy to fight America’s obesity epidemic. Obesity is an enormous problem that plagues individuals worldwide. The prevalence of obesity is high in this country, exceeding 25% in 33 states. In Pennsylvania in 2009, 27.7% of adults were labeled as obese. Additionally, there are many more Philadelphians who are overweight or obese (900,000) than who are at a healthy weight (600,000). Obesity is extremely complex and has several causes. One cause of obesity and the main concern of this study is the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. Sugar-sweetened …

Historical fiction is currently undergoing a renaissance in popularity among readers. However, many questions surround this wide-ranging yet complex genre. How do readers and librarians define historical fiction? Who reads it, why do people choose it, and what do readers expect when they read a historical novel? How can it be found within library collections, given that it's such a broad category? Answers to these questions are discussed, along with an overview of the diverse subgenres of historical fiction.
