Session D-1: African Muslims And The Transatlantic Slave Trade, Steven Buenning

Professional Learning Day

African Muslims played central roles in the largest forced migration in human history; the transatlantic slave trade. This presentation employs primary sources from the online collection of the National Humanities Center and from the Transatlantic Slave Trade Database (Emory University). Participants will engage in close reading of two memoirs of Muslim slaves, as well as three newspaper articles written in 1828. In addition, participants will receive geography exercises. A Powerpoint and a full list of helpful resources are included.

Session E-4: What's Up With The Higgs Boson? Teaching Particle Physics In High School, Peter Dong

Best-selling books, popular PBS specials, and multi-billion-dollar machines all attest to the fascination with particle physics - including many teenagers. Physics and physical science classes can capitalize on this interest by talking about high-profile results, such as last summer's Higgs Boson Discovery. This session will answer some basic questions about contemporary particle physics and suggest some ideas for lessons and projects in particle physics.

Session E-1: Hiding In Plain Sight, Micah Fogel

Were the plays of William Shakespeare really written by Francis Bacon, who left a coded signature in plain sight? Can spies send messages without using codes and without getting caught? Steganography is the art of hiding messages in plain sight but in a way so that only those in on the secret can find them. We'll learn a few tricks about how to hide messages in pieces of text or sound and image files on a computer.

Session C-4: Common Core Standards In The Ninth Grade History Curriculum: First Steps, Jessica Greenberg

This session will focus on incorporating the Common Core standards into the ninth grade World History curriculum. Challenges surrounding this task will be addressed. These include: getting unmotivated students to engage with more text inside and outside of the classroom, addressing the Common Core reading standards without normed reading assessments to determine growth, and teaching the Common Core persuasive writing standards to students who are not ready to write five paragraph essays. Session F-3: Using The Question Formulation Technique In Your Classroom, Susan Bisinger, Lucinda Dittmer

The skill of question formulation can lead to improved learning outcomes, greater student engagement, and more ownership of the learning process. This session presents the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) and guides teachers through strategies for integrating it into their classroom practice. Using the QFT helps students think more critically and independently by asking and evaluating their own questions - whether elementary level, secondary, or beyond. Participants are encouraged to attend the session with an upcoming project or activity in mind. You'll leave with a plan of action!

This presentation will get at the important meanings and usages of the famous debates for the Senate that took place between Lincoln and Douglas in the state of Illinois. Attendees will gain a working knowledge of the event and explore ways to make use of it in class. Finally, the session will align the materials presented with the Common Core standards dealing with the "integration of knowledge and ideas" as well as "reading and writing for literacy".

Session A-3: Across The Wide Missouri: Illinois & Early Exploration Of The Trans-Mississippi West, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.

Illinois History is often perceived as a contradiction in terms. Until the arrival of Abraham Lincoln, most folks think that nothing of any note happened here. This presentation will address the French traders and explorers from the Illinois Country who pushed west up the Missouri and Arkansas Rivers in the century preceding Lewis and Clark's more famous jaunt. The two knew of these French travelers only too well and recruited a half dozen Illinois French at Fort Massac and Kaskaskia to show them how to get to the "unknown". The effect these men had on the Plains was profound.

Numerous psychological and behavioral consequences of obesity have been identified, including low self-esteem, depression, and poor academic performance. Given the higher obesity rates among Latino children and adolescents compared to their white counterparts, this session will provide school counselors with specific recommendations on how to implement an obesity prevention program in a culturally-sensitive manner that promotes development of healthy lifestyles and academic success.

Provides an overview of the development of online tutorials at ITT Dublin with a focus on the instructional design using the eLearning software (Articulate Studio). There is a discussion on the integration of these learning objects into the Institutional VLE (Moodle) and the range of evaluative mechanisms are also highlighted.

The author discusses how these tutorials have been shared and adapted for reuse by other Irish higher education institutions.

This presentation explores the dual recorded legacies of the Grateful Dead: the official legacy of studio and live albums, controlled by the band and their record companies, and the unofficial legacy of concert recordings, controlled by the fans. The presentation includes a discussion of the Thanksgiving Day Massacre (when on November 22, 2005, all Grateful Dead shows were removed from the Live Music Archive) and the incident's effect on band/fan and official/unofficial recorded legacy cooperations and conflicts.

Chlorine Isotope Evidence For Syn-Subduction Modification Of Serpentinites By Interaction With Sediment-Derived Fluid, Jane Selverstone, Zachary Sharp

High-pressure serpentinites and rodingites and high- to ultrahigh-pressure metasedimentary rocks from the Aosta region, Italy, preserve strikingly different chlorine isotope compositions that can be used to constrain the nature of fluid-rock interactions during subduction. Serpentinites and rodingitized gabbroic dikes subducted to 70-80 km have bulk δ37Cl values between –1.6 and +0.9‰ (median= –0.5‰, n=26 plus 5 replicates; one amphibole-vein outlier at –2.9‰). Serpentinite δ37Cl values are positively correlated with Cr ± Cl contents (r2= 0.97 and 0.58) and negatively correlated with CaO (r2=0.72). Language And Literacy Of Pre-Adolescent/Adolescent Bilingual Students: Current Research, Alejandro E. Brice

It is well documented that pre-adolescent and adolescent English learners (ELs) are at-risk for reading difficulties (Escamilla, Chavez, & Vigil, 2005; Lopez, 2009; Hemphill, Vanneman & Rahman, 2011; Snow, Burns & Griffin, 1998; Waxman, Padrón, Shin, & Rivera, 2008). Kohler and Lazarín (2007) stated, nationally only 29% of EL 8th grade students scored at or above the basic reading achievement levels. In comparison, nationally the non-EL 8th grade students scored at 75% at or above the basic reading achievement levels. In addition, the achievement gap among English learning (EL) students has existed and continues to exist. Unfortunately, this gap widens …
