Accessing International Markets: How Professional Service Firms Internationalise, Deirdre Mcquillan, Pamela Sharkey Scott, Vincent Mangematin

Professional service firms (“PSFs”) increasingly rely on internationalisation to drive their growth strategy. Their professional reputation and networks of relationships are critical due to the high knowledge complexity of their services. Yet international business process theory, while identifying learning as the critical tool for addressing foreign market risk, provides little insight into how PSFs build relationships and reputation for internationalisation. Our qualitative multiple case research study of the PSF internationalisation process identifies phases of interplay between learning, relationship and reputation building. The event itself was designed to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. In the early stages of the project, it was clear that a charity event would have the largest impact both on our experiential learning as well as the community as a whole. Dana-Farber was selected as the events beneficiary due to their impressive contributions to cancer research worldwide. While the success of the project isn't solely determined by charitable contributions we collected, it provided a form of measurement of progress throughout the semester. In 2010 Liberty University began a Patron-Driven Acquisition pilot program with ebrary. Since then, the program has grown dramatically. The presenters describe how the library uses past usage data to create a predictive formula for ebook use. New ebook titles were added to the program based on formula selections. Success of the formula was evaluated, and overall the results are positive. The presenters also explain how the library handles the purchasing and cataloging of the ebooks.

Meditation is a practice that originated primarily in the Eastern spiritual traditions over twelve thousand years ago. Mindfulness meditation, also called Samatha meditation in Buddhism, is the practice of quieting one’s mind by turning focused attention to the senses currently being experienced, in particular; the breath. This sort of purposeful attention to breath alone creates a feeling of serenity rarely experienced in everyday life due to the quieting of mind in synchronization with the body. In 2012, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota librarians transformed the Twin Cities campus library’s instructional services. The goals were to expand instructional services while maintaining current staffing models and to provide responsive, relevant, and sustainable instruction that did not take away from class time or add to faculty workloads. Scientists are being asked to keep and share their research data, and librarians are beginning to have a role in the curation of that data. Working with a small economics association, the librarians who coordinate AgEcon Search worked with the data services librarian at the University of Minnesota to select Dataverse (http://thedata.org/, hosted at Harvard) for the data related to the association’s journal. Dataverse is free, has good documentation, and is optimized for social sciences data. This poster presentation will give the reasons for our selection of Dataverse and give an overview of our implementation of this project.

As our users collect and produce all manner of electronic items, organizing and preserving them is a growing challenge. Following the lead of the Library of Congress’s Personal Archiving initiative, http://www.digitalpreservation.gov/personalarchiving/ the University of Minnesota Libraries is investigating user needs and possible solutions. The results of a survey of first year students helped inform our direction. A staff boot camp will build library staff skills, and Web resources and other outreach efforts are planned.

Lower-skilled adult learners likely lack print or digital literacy skills to independently use self-directed interactive websites like LiveMocha and learning systems like MOOCs. The rapid pace of technological development is increasing the digital divide, further limiting participation of lower-skilled people in higher-education and employment. In the session participants will consider strategies for addressing the issue and learn about efforts in Minnesota to provide support for lower-skilled adults working to become self-directed, digitally literate learners.
