Production Scheduling Project: Nutra Manufacturing, S. Paris, S. Biega, S. Smoot, K. Taylor, S. Mason

Focus on Creative Inquiry

In partnership with Nutra's Greenville manufacturing plant, this capstone design project focused on developing an improved scheduling process. The current scheduling system at Nutra encompasses a heavily manual process. This involves completing duplicate processes in multiple locations throughout the facility resulting in a delay of product state information. The proposed benefits of the product include improving usability of the system, simplifying the scheduling process, and implementing a dynamic system. One of the biggest issues with the current system is the transparency between scheduling tools. Background/Purpose: Hospital nurses are often the first line caregivers who receive questions regarding hospice and palliative care. Research has identified underutilization of these services due to multiple barriers in the referral process.This study aimed to identify nurse knowledge and comfort levels with hospice and palliative care and any barriers they perceive in referrals.Methods: A survey was distributed to acute care nurses on various specialty units at two large hospitals in SC. The questions covered demographics, knowledge and comfort level with hospice and palliative care, and perceived barriers to referral.Results: Seventy-nine nurses completed the survey. Spider silk, an ancient biomaterial, has many qualities worth replicating. With the use of genetic modification, relatively large amounts of the spider silk protein have been produced through goat milk. With access to this protein we have worked to create spider silk films and hydrogels. Through chemical and mechanical means, we are discovering treatments that maximize cell growth and cell attachment on spider silk films and hydrogels.

Biomass is biological material derived from living organisms that can be used for fuel and energy sources. Given current energy concerns, high yielding biomass production systems are in greater demand than ever. Wood is a natural, high energy and environmentally sound source that has a long history of use as feedstock for energy, chemical extractives, and fiber. A better understanding of wood formation in trees is fundamental to efforts to enhance the production of woody biomass. The brain’s ability to learn and remember is a topic of extensive debate and research. Mammals share many similarities, including the way in which information from the outside world is processed and stored. Mammalian circadian rhythms have long been thought to be essentially involved with these processes. This experiment is designed to explore the brain’s ability to process and store information at different times of the day. Changes in or the absence of circadian neurotransmitters lead to serious impairments correlated with sleep and wakefulness [1]. To better study the effects of Cystic Fibrosis on the human body, it is important to be able to effectively and efficiently recreate the disease in an appropriate mammalian model. New technology in transfection reagent, jetPRIME, hopes to allow us to efficiently transfer these Cystic Fibrosis sequences into sheep embryos to allow the traits to be expressed on a more reliable basis on the cloned sheep.

My research with this reagent was to test the reliability of jetPRIME to transfer our desired DNA sequences into cells at a more efficient rate then previously demonstrated by other reagents. Because of the …

Focus on Creative Inquiry

This capstone project focused on Nutra's manufacturing scheduling system. Originally there were numerous scheduling tools in place for the softgel, hardshell and tablet manufacturing processes. After identifying users, conducting surveys, and generating metrics, we came to understand that the new system needed to be automated, easy to use, standardized, and capable of meeting due dates. The team then developed an initial scheduling solution. Following this, multiple usability tests were conducted to help refine and improve the solution. The final solution reduced the amount of time and manual input it took to create a manufacturing schedule and has the potential to …

Busting 5 Myths About Mentoring In Academic Libraries, Mandi Goodsett

One common way that librarians bridge the gap between what they learned in library school and what they are expected to do in tenure-track professional positions is to participate in mentoring programs for new academic librarians. However, the success of these programs is sometimes deterred by several common myths about mentoring programs. Using analysis of the results of a nation-wide survey and six interviews of mentoring program participants, this poster will address five myths about mentoring in academic libraries and specific ways libraries can use the truths behind the myths to create stronger library mentoring programs.

Creating Engaging Information Literacy Tutorials, Mandi Goodsett

Academic and public librarians are increasingly recognizing the value of online tutorials as a means of providing patrons with the ability to learn information literacy concepts and explore library tools at their own pace and at the point of need. However, a static tutorial video cannot compete with the dynamic, engaging information content that patrons encounter in their everyday lives, and they often fail to produce lasting learning. Studies have shown that providing students with content that requires interaction and participation more successfully keeps their attention and ensures more permanent recall. Unpacking Mooc Scholarly Discourse: A Review Of Nascent Mooc Scholarship, Maureen Ebben, Julien Murphy

The rapid rise of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) signals a shift in the ways in which digital teaching and learning are engaged in and understood. Drawing upon a comprehensive search of nine leading academic databases, this paper examines the initial phase of MOOC scholarship (2009–2013), and offers an analysis of these empirical studies that conceptualizes themes in MOOC scholarship and locates them within a chronological framework. Two key phases of scholarship about MOOCs are identified, each with associated research imperatives and themes.

The creation of greater New York City in 1898 promised a solution to the problem of supplying Brooklyn and Queens with water. In the 1850s, the City of Brooklyn tapped ponds and streams on the south side of Queens County, and in the 1880s, dug wells for additional supply. This lowered the water table and caused problems for farmers and oystermen, many of whom sued the city for damages. Ultimately, salt water seeped into some wells from over-pumping. By 1896, Brooklyn’s system had reached its limit. Prevented by the state legislature from tapping the aquifer beneath Suffolk’s Pine Barrens, the …

Addressing students’ problem behaviors in the classroom is a primary responsibility of teachers and, therefore, should be a major emphasis for teacher education in special education. This session will present classroom applications and data to demonstrate the effectiveness of using the competing behavior (CB) model proposed by Crone and Horner (2003) as a positive behavior support procedure. Specifically, the primary presenter guided the use of a highly systematic and replicable positive behavior support procedure for inservice and preservice special education teachers during a teacher education coursework at a university.
