Graphene As Gas Detector, Christina A. Bibler, Andrew Tan May 2014

Graphene As Gas Detector, Christina A. Bibler, Andrew Tan

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

The so-called scotch-tape method is a commonly used process to isolate graphene from bulk graphite. However, the flakes of graphene that are produced are small and must be found individually. We present results from our home-built chemical vapor deposition chamber that allows us to produce large surface graphene sheets via the pyrolytic decomposition of methane. We also present ongoing work to produce devices from this graphene for the purpose of making gas sensors.

Among the types of cancer diagnosed every year, skin cancer is the most common. Of all skin cancers diagnosed, basal and squamous cell skin cancers affect about 2.2 million and melanoma affects more than 76,000 Americans each year (ACS, 2013b). Tanning bed use has been associated with a 59% higher risk of melanoma and is particularly dangerous for people who begin tanning younger than age 35 (CDC, 2013b). The data from the 2010 National Health Interview Survey found the highest prevalence rates of indoor tanning were among white women aged 18-21 (31.8%) and 22-25 (29.6% (CDC, 2012). This is the …

E-Content Statistics Schedule: Get It Together And Manage The Chaos Of Usage Statistics, Lanette Garza May 2014

E-Content Statistics Schedule: Get It Together And Manage The Chaos Of Usage Statistics, Lanette Garza

Library Faculty Research

For years, the Coates Library at Trinity University has collected detailed usage statistics, but this valuable data was not reviewed on a consistent basis and most librarians did not know where to look for the data. In my first few months as the new E-Content Analysis and Assessment Librarian, I became overwhelmed by the amount of data I was pulling and distraught over how to organize the many reports I was to provide to the librarians and administrators. It quickly became apparent to me that I would need to get it together and timeline the reports. Not only would this …

The Art Of Discovery: Helping Students Find Inspiration In Unlikely Places, Kelly Grey Carlisle, Anne Jumonville Graf

Library Faculty Research

How can an "old space" like Special Collections be repurposed to meet evolving information literacy learning goals? This presentation will address ways in which a traditional library space can be reimagined as a place to engage students in affective learning at the beginning of the research process. By crafting activities for students that emphasize exploration and open-ended discovery, librarians and faculty can help students slow down and approach research more creatively. In the session, we (two librarians and a teaching faculty member) will share specific outcomes, activities, and the results of our assessments.

Participants will:

  • Understand the importance of affective …

Effects Of Family Supportive Supervisor Behaviors (Fssb) On Work And Health Related Outcomes, Dorothy B. Johnson

University Presentation Showcase Event

Organizations have been implementing family-friendly benefits to help with the increasing demand of dependent care responsibilities. These benefits have been underutilized (Allen, 2009). One reason is due to the lack of supervisor support. Researchers have identified the underlying behaviors of a family supportive supervisor and has termed them family supportive supervisor behaviors (FSSB).

This study examined the processes underlying how family supportive supervisor behaviors (FSSB) influence positive job and health related outcomes, specifically affective commitment, job satisfaction, and subjective well-being

Comparison Of Odonata Populations In Natural And Constructed Emergent Wetlands In The Bluegrass Region Of Kentucky, Brittany Brookshire

University Presentation Showcase Event

BIOLOGY OUTSTANDING UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AWARD WINNER!

Wetlands provide valuable hydrological functions and provide valuable niches for many small species of animals, including dragonflies (Biebighauser 2011). Without wetlands serving as reproductive habitat the dragonfly population would decrease exponentially. Research has shown that in the past forty years Kentucky has lost up to 80% of its own natural wetlands (Brown & Richter 2012).

Wetlands provide: §Niches for small mammals, insects, amphibians and birds §Hydrology and flood prevention for surrounding areas §Habitat and resting areas for Migratory Waterfowl.

Odonates could be important to discovering many of the variations between natural and artificial …

Lurking Element: A Study About The Dangers Of Lead And Other Harmful Elements In Northern Kentucky Toy Vending Machines, Brittany M. Wells

University Presentation Showcase Event

Imagine yourself walking into a dollar store with a young child. As soon as you reach the door, the child is drawn to the vending machines that contain numerous toys. As a parent, you give your child a couple of quarters to get a toy of his or her choice. After the child receives the toy, she marks it by licking and chewing it. As consumers, we tend to believe those toys are safe for use, but sometimes those toys can contain toxic chemicals, such as lead and other metals. Although lead exposure has decreased tremendously over the past three …

The Effects Of The Melting Arctic Ice Cap On Florida's Coast, Anthony Atkinson, Nicholas Joseph, Louw Scheepers May 2014

The Effects Of The Melting Arctic Ice Cap On Florida's Coast, Anthony Atkinson, Nicholas Joseph, Louw Scheepers

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

We've set out to determine the effect of arctic ice melt on the coastline of Florida, more specifically its major cities and tourist attractions. To do this, we created multiple mathematical models on different bases to ensure that our models are behaving in an appropriate manner. We constructed one statistical model based on past sea level rise data, and one theoretical model based on our interpretations of different components that add to the total sea level rise. Our data and analysis showed firm indications of extreme effects on the coastline of Florida and some of its major tourist attractions by …

Help International Students To Make Friends With Others, Danqing Zhao May 2014

Help International Students To Make Friends With Others, Danqing Zhao

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

Recent years increasing international students come to Colby for high education. Colby also did a lot of things to help these students and tried to attract more. However, I notice that most international students spend most times with each other. They understand the importance of communicating with different people but have trouble or dont have chance to make American friends. Getting alone with students from the same culture background is more comfortable than contacting with totally different people. Therefore, Colby may need to do something to improve the relationship between international students and local students. It is also beneficial to …

Single And Ready To Mingle: Factors Affecting Risky Sexual Behavior, Ines Castro, Jacqueline Charlton, Rebecca Stoutamyer, Katherine Kimball May 2014

Single And Ready To Mingle: Factors Affecting Risky Sexual Behavior, Ines Castro, Jacqueline Charlton, Rebecca Stoutamyer, Katherine Kimball

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

College students today are having a lot of unprotected sex with multiple partners, making the risk of college students contracting an STI extremely high. Previous research has found that high self-esteem increase the likelihood that an individual will use a condom. It has also been found that extroversion leads to decreased condom use, perhaps due to the fact that extroverts are more likely to seek out risky situations. This study looked at how extroversion, gender, and sociosexual orientation moderated the relationship between self-esteem and condom use. We measured self-esteem, extroversion, SOI, condom use intentions and willingness and demographics using an …

It’S Our Money And We Want It Now:Secession In Resource Rich Countries And The Role Of The International Community, Kiernan Somers May 2014

It’S Our Money And We Want It Now:Secession In Resource Rich Countries And The Role Of The International Community, Kiernan Somers

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

Tensions between the right to self-determination and existing states have caused many conflicts around the globe. Resource rich regions such as Katanga, Biafra, South Sudan, East Timor, Cabinda, and Aceh all had to go through the international community to gain statehood and were either granted or declined the right to self-determination. Secessionist movements frequently challenge existing state borderlines; however, few reach the ultimate goal of statehood. Secession attempts in resource rich regions, whether carried out by unorganized rebels, or a fully functioning autonomous government, are dependent on the international community for success. Through textual analyses of academic journals, monographs, and …

Modeling The Optimization Of A Toll Booth Plaza, Liam Connell, Zachary Schutzman, Erin Hoover May 2014

Modeling The Optimization Of A Toll Booth Plaza, Liam Connell, Zachary Schutzman, Erin Hoover

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

When designing a toll plaza, many factors have to be considered, especially the number of toll booths to build. In this paper, we try to determine the optimal number of toll booths by creating a model for car movement at a toll plaza. We define optimal as the number of toll booths that minimizes the waiting time, particularly at a high congestion time (i.e. rush hour). To model the movement of cars through a toll booth plaza, we break the problem into two parts: time spent waiting in line and then time spent merging back into traffic. Because each of …

The Effect Of Choline Supplementation And The Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) On Medial Temporal Lobe Volume Changes As A Measurement Of Depression, Leigh Mathieu May 2014

The Effect Of Choline Supplementation And The Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) On Medial Temporal Lobe Volume Changes As A Measurement Of Depression, Leigh Mathieu

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

Depression is a prevalent mood disorder categorized by a lowered mood state, social withdrawal, somatic symptoms, cognitive defects, and feelings of worthlessness or guilt. Prenatal supplementation of the essential nutrient choline increases adult hippocampal neurogenesis and can reduce the risk and improve prognosis of depression and other mood disorders. Characteristic in these disorders is dysfunction in neural plasticity as mediated through the growth factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Genetic variants and mutations in the genes that code for this and related proteins in humans and rats affect the brain in many ways, including how dopaminergic synapses in the reward pathway …

Results will aid in the understanding of the glacial formation of the lake, distribution of sediment within, and human impact on the lake. Additionally, knowing the distribution of phosphorus within the sediments may allow development of a strategy to avoid accelerated eutrophication. This research will …

The Lack Of Meat At Colby And The Barbecue Solution., Tommaso Montagni May 2014

The Lack Of Meat At Colby And The Barbecue Solution., Tommaso Montagni

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

One of Colby Colleges dining services most criticized aspects is its lack of meat. Its a problem that has crossed most students minds. Students often talk about wanting freshly cooked meat rather than frozen burgers and the usual piece of chicken. The idea of having a steak and sausage barbecue in the warm spring sun is what Colby students would dream of. I am proposing to set up a permanent tent near Johnson pond and have barbecues Monday though Thursday, each day dedicated to a different class. This would both serve as a great opportunity for the many hungry students …

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

This poster presentation covers our research on a mathematical game that is somewhat similar to the popular game Nim. In this game, Players play a variation of Nim where the number of piles must be a perfect square and where the piles are actually situated within a matrix. In addition, players are only allowed to subtract one from an entry on their turn, where as in Nim there are typically more options. The game is over either when a player does not have a move to make (because all entries have been reduced to zero) or the when the game …

An Analysis Of Municipality-Level Election Results Of The 2012 Presidential Election In New York, Pennsylvania, And Ohio, And Comparison Of These Results To Those From The 2008 Presidential Election, Gregory Naigles

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

The 2008 and 2012 Presidential elections were both similar and different in many ways. On one hand, the Democratic candidate was the same in both elections, and similar strategies were employed by both sides in the two elections. On the other hand, the candidates formed slightly different coalitions, turnout rates were different, and there were some differences in which states the campaigns chose to focus on. I have analyzed the results of these two elections, particularly the 2012 presidential election, in the three states of New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, in order to try to determine where the election results …
