Accessible Interlibrary Loan For Users With Disabilities: An Open Discussion, Michael Priehs Jun 2014

Accessible Interlibrary Loan For Users With Disabilities: An Open Discussion, Michael Priehs

Library Scholarly Publications

At its core, interlibrary loan is about access to information. But are we succeeding for our patrons with disabilities? Are our systems, practices, and deliverables meeting the needs of all of our users? While much has been written and explored concerning obtaining special format materials, less has been written concerning the usability of our resource sharing systems for disabled persons. Assistive, or mainstream, technologies and Universal Design are popular discussions among disability and web design specialists. Likewise, in a discipline where accessibility and technology often guide our progress, resource sharing librarians should be aware of these issues in regards to …

At-Risky Business: Empowering And Engaging At-Risk Youth Using A Wiki For Academic Service Learning, Kathryn Johnson

Conference Presentations

This paper examines the lessons learned from implementing an academic service learning project using a wiki to foster mentoring opportunities for at-risk students from two educational institutions. Students on freshmen probation at a university mentored down to at-risk students at a high school about making the transition to university life and academics. In a reciprocal relationship, the at-risk high school students in a career preparation class “mentored up” to the university students about employability skills. The two groups interacted using a wiki. Students were empowered by mentoring and learned valuable digital writing and collaboration skills throughout this innovative project. This …

Connecting Globally And Giving Back: Using Video Conferencing And Iclickers For Academic Service Learning, Kathryn Johnson

Conference Presentations

This paper examines the best practices and lessons learned from implementing an academic service learning project based on an interactive video conference and using iClickers. Seventy students in an undergraduate World History class explored the rich history and culture of Syria by interacting with a Fulbright Scholar from that country. Inspired by the scholar’s emphasis on the human face of Syria rather than current political turmoil, the students initiated a fundraiser through UNICEF to benefit the innocent youth victims currently in refugee camps. Students expressed their opinions using iClickers and voted in true democratic fashion on every direction and step …

Problems With Authority, Meagan Lacy Jun 2014

Problems With Authority, Meagan Lacy

Open Educational Resources

These presentation materials were used to create an online tutorial for undergraduate students about how to evaluate the authority of an information source. It includes a PowerPoint presentation and lecture notes on an event-driven publication cycle and uses the death of pop star Michael Jackson as its primary example. This resource was designed with the Association of College & Research Libraries' Framework for Information Literacy (2015) in mind and addresses two of the threshold concepts that the Framework identifies: 1) "Authority is Constructed and Contextual," and 2) "Information Creation as a Process." These materials can be easily adapted for …
