Community Engagement & Information Literacy: A Case Study, Gretchen Keer, Jeffra Diane Bussmann Aug 2014

Community Engagement & Information Literacy: A Case Study, Gretchen Keer, Jeffra Diane Bussmann

The Colloquium on Libraries & Service Learning

This session is a case study describing our exploration of community engagement and information literacy over four quarters in LIBY1210: Introduction to Information Literacy. Our module introduces students to new ways of viewing the production of knowledge by asking them to participate in a community-based participatory action research scenario. Typically, unless librarians can attach instruction activities to existing service learning courses, we are not able to assign such projects. However, if we shift our focus from a service learning/volunteerism paradigm to a broader community engagement model, there are opportunities to expand into a more social justice based approach.

Planetary Protection (PP) is a scientific discipline that aims to protect other celestial bodies from microorganisms found on Earth by preventing forward and backward contamination. Forward contamination is bringing life from Earth to a given celestial body and backward contamination is preventing contamination of eventual sample return missions from Mars back to Earth. PP verifies that NASA Planetary Protection requirements are met in part via the NASA Standard Assay in order to support the launch approval process and to comply with international law. The NASA Standard Assay verifies these bioburden requirements by quantifying any aerobic, heterotrophic, and heat-shock resistant isolates. …

For well over a century, American biologists have built collection of plants, animals, fungi, insects, and other natural materials. Often, these collections serve as a record of the unique biodiversity of the local area and provide a record of change over time. Many taxonomic, genetic, and environmental discoveries lay waiting in the drawers and cupboards in which these specimens are stored. / / Uploading images of natural history specimens to Digital Commons allows them to be easily discovered in with a web search, leading the user back to the home collection. As an example, a search for 'big leaf magnolia …

Abstract: Complementary Therapies as Stress-Reduction in Children with Mental Illness

Mental Illness is being diagnosed at a faster rate and in younger populations than in the past. While children with Mental Illness face a number of physical, social, and emotional concerns, how can we balance a child’s physical, social, emotional, and developmental needs while supporting mental wellness? The National Institute for Mental Health identifies current treatment for children with mental illness to include psychotherapy and medications. Complementary therapies can help support children’s therapy by reducing stress in children with mental illness. If we can reduce stress in children …

Ripple Effect: Etds, Workflows, And Policies One Year After "A Bigger Splash", Todd Bruns, Stacey Knight-Davis

Faculty & Staff Research & Creative Activity

Since 2008 EIU has been digitizing ETDs and making them available via the library catalog, I-Share (the state of IL consortia catalog), and WorldCat. It was only after ETDs were included in the institutional repository (The Keep) that the majority of faculty became fully aware of how accessible these theses had become. This dawning realization led to important conversations with faculty and other stakeholders about concerns regarding publishing, grant approval, and patents. Following these discussions new embargo policies and workflows were developed. In this presentation, we will provide statistics showing increased access to ETDs due to the repository, and describe …

This presentation, delivers at the Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group annual meeting at Valparaiso University, IN, outlines two relatively easy extensions of Digital Commons that use its native features in novel ways. One ("Preserving and Tracking Permissions in Digital Commons") takes advantage of the system to manage permissions recordkeeping, and the other ("Paper of the Day Emails") exploits the quarterly archive for an automatic marketing program. Attendees will discover sustainable ways to keep themselves in copyright compliance and their …

Estimating Upper Extremity Joint Contributions In Functional Motions To Create A Metric For Injury Prevention Using Opensim, Alex Kozlowski, Eric Honert, Fernando Aguilar, Craig M. Goehler Jul 2014

Estimating Upper Extremity Joint Contributions In Functional Motions To Create A Metric For Injury Prevention Using Opensim, Alex Kozlowski, Eric Honert, Fernando Aguilar, Craig M. Goehler

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Functional movements have the potential to predict risk of injury based on the frequency of these movements on a daily basis. In order for a metric to be established, a variety of healthy subjects must be recorded performing these motions. It was predicted that motions covering a large three-dimensional workspace will require greater contributions from the shoulder joint, while motions with more of a planar workspace will require greater contributions from the elbow joint. Ten subjects, five male and five female, performed two different functional tasks involving the upper extremity. Pointing and drinking tasks were selected based on the frequency …

Examining The Dampening Effects Of Varying Shoe Architecture During Gait, Lauren Knop, David Rutkowski, Brie Lawson Jul 2014

Examining The Dampening Effects Of Varying Shoe Architecture During Gait, Lauren Knop, David Rutkowski, Brie Lawson

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Studies have shown that running shoe architecture may play a major role in lower extremity injury prevention (Wiegerinck, et al). It has been hypothesized that shoes with added support are more effective at preventing injury, due to the greater force dampening effect that the increased stability provides. Initial studies tested this hypothesis by measuring the in-shoe force data in the heel region of two running shoe types from two different companies. The two running shoe types were classified as flexible and stability where the flexible shoes provided a lower level of support than the stability shoes. The recorded walking trials …

Leaf Mechanical Strength Corresponds To Tissue Water Relations In Twelve Species Of California Ferns, Breahna M. Gillespie, Stephen D. Davis, Jarmila Pittermann Jul 2014

Leaf Mechanical Strength Corresponds To Tissue Water Relations In Twelve Species Of California Ferns, Breahna M. Gillespie, Stephen D. Davis, Jarmila Pittermann

Biology

The dominant vegetation types in southern California’s coastal foothills are chaparral and costal sage scrub. Chaparral shrubs have mechanically strong evergreen leaves whereas coastal sage scrubs bear mechanical weak, facultative deciduous leaves. What about the ferns that live in the understory of these vegetation types, especially considering their adaptations to a summer dry, Mediterranean-type climate? We tested the hypothesis that some fern leaves are stronger than others and mechanically strong leaves are associated with greater dehydration tolerance. Twelve fern species were examined. Tissue water relations were assessed via pressure volume curves using Scholander-Hammel pressure chambers. We estimated osmotic potential at …

Relationship Between Dehydration Tolerance Of California Ferns And The Mechanical Strength Of Their Stipes, Helen I. Holmlund, Stephen D. Davis Jul 2014

Relationship Between Dehydration Tolerance Of California Ferns And The Mechanical Strength Of Their Stipes, Helen I. Holmlund, Stephen D. Davis

Biology

In recent years, experts in plant physiology have begun to explore the functional traits of ferns, especially in regards to their tissue-water relations. However, to our knowledge, no scientist had yet examined the relationship between fern biomechanics and physiology. We examined the mechanical properties of fern stipes (stems) and attempted to relate those properties to ecological and physiological traits. Based on our knowledge of fern anatomy, we hypothesized that stipe mechanical strength would not correlate with water-stress resistance as it does in seed-bearing plants.

We assessed mechanical strength using Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) and tissue-water relations using pressure-volume curves. Water-stress …
