The Effect Of Education On Compassion Fatigue As Experienced By Staff Nurses, Katie Zehr Jan 2015

The Effect Of Education On Compassion Fatigue As Experienced By Staff Nurses, Katie Zehr

Graduate Academic Symposium

Historically, nursing has been perceived as a highly rewarding profession. Yet, due to the increasing complexity of today’s healthcare, nurses are faced with greater challenges in their work environments. Additionally, registered nurses who work in tertiary care settings are exposed to disturbing patient situations that can be taxing on psychological health. Some examples include trauma, death, abuse, or chronic disease. Joinson (1992) described this experience as compassion fatigue (CF) and explains that those who experience CF may have symptoms such as headaches, short attention span, or fatigue. The purpose of this EBP project was to increase awareness about CF risks, …

Tree Inventory Analysis: A Comparison Of Park Species Richness To The Surrounding Neighborhoods In Rock Island, Illinois, Kevin Root Jan 2015

Tree Inventory Analysis: A Comparison Of Park Species Richness To The Surrounding Neighborhoods In Rock Island, Illinois, Kevin Root

Urban Forest Project

Urban forests (parks, right-of-way trees, yards, and remnant woodlots and semi-natural areas) are critical sources such diversity in urban areas. Diversity of urban forest is often related to the socioeconomic status, housing age, and elevation of the neighborhood. With the invasion of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) in the last decade, conserving and enhancing the diversity of urban forests has become an important tool in increasing the resilience of such ecosystems to such devastating invasion. We assessed the diversity and composition of the forests of 17 parks in Rock Island, Illinois and examined the relationship between such diversity and the …

Enhanced Presentation Of Tomographic Data, Carmen Watts Clayton, Bernice E. Mills, George Buffleben, Thien Vu-Nguyen Jan 2015

Enhanced Presentation Of Tomographic Data, Carmen Watts Clayton, Bernice E. Mills, George Buffleben, Thien Vu-Nguyen

STAR Program Research Presentations

Solid materials can now be viewed non-destructively with x-rays by tomography; a technique for taking many 2D images of an object at many angles and reconstructing the images into a 3D data cube. The data is next rendered into 2D or 3D still images or movies. By nature, x-ray tomography yields a very large amount of data in three dimensions. Effectively displaying this data to an audience is a challenge.

In this work techniques are explored to improve the presentation methods of movies of both 2D and 3D tomographic data for visual appeal and correct perspective. Finding the optimal ways …

The quality of the information is difficult to evaluate, organize, and use to support risk assessment of laboratory work with hazardous chemicals. Professionals in health and safety, chemistry librarianship and informatics are partnering to address these challenges particularly in the academic research and teaching context. Goals are to streamline access to relevant data from authoritative sources, organize and classify chemical safety information to …

Designer Genes, Designer Drugs And Resources Designing “The New Biology”: A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Fred Stoss

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

A seven-foot 1950s-style model of DNA hangs in my office, as a reminder of what we then knew about “The Molecule of Life.” We today marvel at how far we have come in our understanding of that molecule, its impact on the study of biology, and the new discoveries in “The New Biology” of the Post-Genomic Era. What resources, services, publications and training is required of science librarians to assist students, faculties, and staff. What are today’s driving forces directing “The Newest Biology?”

A Practical Comparison Of Scopus And Web Of Science, A. Ben Wagner

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

Few organizations can afford both Web of Science and Scopus, making it difficult for librarians to make in-depth comparisons to support acquisition decisions. The new SUNY-wide Elsevier Big Deal included access to Scopus making it possible for our unversity to perform a review based on the current and much improved interfaces of both databases. Search, display, & analysis features will be compared with a special emphasis on author/institution disambiguation via clustering and citation metrics.

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of scanned text enables full-text searching. Unfortunately, OCR software does not produce 100% accurate representation of the text, especially with older works having varying fonts, odd layouts and ink bleed-through. Led by Missouri Botanical Garden, and partnering with New York Botanical Garden, Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology and Cornell, an IMLS-funded project has developed 2 games to engage the public in correcting inaccurately OCRed text in BHL.

Function Based Interventions, Pbis, And North Metro Gnets Student Successes, Cassandra A. Holifield Dr, Kimberly Thorpe, Jessica Schuster

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Functional Behavioral Assessments are generally considered to be a problem-solving process for addressing student problem behavior. FBAs rely on a variety of techniques and strategies to identify the purposes of specific behavior that help IEP teams select interventions that directly address the problem behavior. A functional behavioral assessment looks beyond student behavior itself. The focus when conducting a functional behavioral assessment is to identify significant, pupil-specific social/emotional, affective, cognitive, and/or environmental factors associated with the occurrence (and non-occurrence) of specific behaviors. The broader perspective of an FBA offers a better understanding of the function or purpose behind student behavior. Behavior …
