A Small Library Launches A Publishing Program, Janelle L. Wertzberger

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Panel title: Staffing a Library Publishing Program: The Whos, Hows, and Whens

Panel abstract: This session aims to address one of the most frequently raised concerns about library-led publishing: how to plan for staffing this new endeavor? The panel will discuss two inflection points in staff planning for library publishing: what it takes to get started (for a library that is just beginning to think about publishing), and what it takes to grow (for a library that has a few years of experience and wants to do more). It will also shed light on one of the least understood, and …

Sustaining Curiosity: Programs For Developing Lifelong Readers, Meagan Lacy, Pauline Dewan, Barbara Fister, Willie Miller, Elizabeth Brookbank

Publications and Research

The revised information literacy standards emphasize students as creators, and not just consumers, of information. Yet, so accustomed to supporting their classroom work, academic libraries have done little to help students develop an instinct for encountering information through self-directed curiosity. In this panel, learn how librarians are helping students develop this instinct through recreational reading promotion. Use and adapt these program and outreach ideas in order to better meet your academic library’s information literacy mission.

The Relationship Between Religiosity And Friendship Quality, Namele Gutierrez, Cindy Miller-Perrin, Elizabeth Krumrei-Mancuso Dr. Mar 2015

The Relationship Between Religiosity And Friendship Quality, Namele Gutierrez, Cindy Miller-Perrin, Elizabeth Krumrei-Mancuso Dr.

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

The study’s objective was to examine a possible relationship between religiosity and friendship quality through the relational model. We hypothesized that higher levels of religiosity would positively enhance friendship quality. Young adults (N = 118) from a small, Christian university participated in an online survey. We observed a main effect for religiosity of the participant and religiosity of the best friend in predicting greater support and depth as well as an interaction between the participants’ religiosity and best friend’s religiosity in predicting support. Specifically, for participants low in religiosity, having a friend with higher levels of religiosity was associated …

Flow-Induced Dilation Of Skeletal Muscle Feed Arteries: Relevance To Exercise Hyperemia, Brittni N. Moore, Jeffrey J. Jasperse Dr. Mar 2015

Flow-Induced Dilation Of Skeletal Muscle Feed Arteries: Relevance To Exercise Hyperemia, Brittni N. Moore, Jeffrey J. Jasperse Dr.

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

During exercise, an increase in blood flow to working skeletal muscle is necessary in order to sustain activity for longer than a few seconds. This is accomplished by the dilation of arteries and arterioles feeding the muscle. Arterioles, located within contracting muscle, are exposed to dilatory metabolites released by the muscle; however, the mechanism by which feed arteries dilate is still unknown, since they are located external to the muscle. The purpose of this study was to determine if flow-induced dilation (resulting from shear stress on endothelial cells) contributes to exercise hyperemia in rat extensor digitorum longus and gastrocnemius muscle …

Economic Analysis Of Flight Delay, Nathan D. Boettcher Mar 2015

Economic Analysis Of Flight Delay, Nathan D. Boettcher

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Our project began as an investigation into the phenomenon of flight delay. We approached this problem with two goals in mind. First, we used mathematical statistics and econometric methods to develop a predictive model of flight delay. An improved forecasting process has obvious benefits for customers, and would additionally shed light on the factors which airports and airlines should seek to change in order to reduce flight delay. Our secondary goal was to complement this predictive research with a theoretical analysis of the incentive structure that consumers and producers face. We limited the scope of this model to delayed flights …

The Virtual Self: Avatar And Individual Determinants Of Mood, Ivana Wang, Steven Rouse Dr., Elizabeth Krumrei-Mancuso Dr. Mar 2015

The Virtual Self: Avatar And Individual Determinants Of Mood, Ivana Wang, Steven Rouse Dr., Elizabeth Krumrei-Mancuso Dr.

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

We explored the potential of avatar-based games as a method of influencing mood. Factors such as avatar customization, participants’ perception of accurate avatar-self representation, self-esteem, and personality were assessed in relation to changes in affect following avatar game play.

With technology dominating the culture of the current day, it’s no surprise that people are becoming increasingly more concerned with their online persona. Most often, this impression is managed via an avatar, which through customization can become an accurate translation of the individual who created it (actual-self) or instead portray the self that he or she wants to be (ideal-self). The …

Creating An International Curriculum: Why And How?, Pj Magne Feb 2015

Creating An International Curriculum: Why And How?, Pj Magne

Plymouth Institute of Education

Today’s globally interconnected world offers a vast array of new opportunities, but it has simultaneously created a need for greater intercultural understanding (Koehne, 2006). The current rise of internationalisation policy and strategy suggests that HEIs recognise the part they need to play to enable graduates to operate effectively in the 21st century (Bremer & Van-der-Wende, 1995; Knight & Yorke, 2003; Shiel, 2006) Whilst it is would be irresponsible to ignore the challenges posed by internationalisation, it is also important to recognise that it provides a rich source of opportunity (Magne, 2014). For example an internationalised curriculum may: help to educate …

A Synthesis Of Terrestrial Carbon Balance Of Alaska And Projected Changes In The 21st Century: Implications For Climate Policy And Carbon Management, A. D. Mcguire

Research Posters

To better understand how carbon responses to changes in climate and other drivers in Alaska might influence national climate and carbon management policies, the U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service and university scientists, has conducted a comprehensive assessment of the historical (1960-2009) and projected (2010-2099) carbon balance for Alaska. This assessment of carbon dynamics in Alaska includes (1) syntheses of soil, vegetation, and surface water carbon stocks and fluxes in Alaska, and (2) state of the art models of fire dynamics, vegetation change, forest management, permafrost dynamics, and upland, wetland, and surface water ecosystem carbon dynamics. …
