A New Laboratory For Mm-/Sub-Mm-Wave Characterization Of Cosmic Dust Analogs, Lunjun Liu, Thushara Perera, Faculty Advisor
John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference
At visible wavelengths, cosmic dust obscures many interesting astronomical environments such as stellar nurseries and new planetary systems. Studying how light interacts with cosmic dust would help reveal the nature of the objects and environments that are obscured by dust. In order to study the optical properties of cosmic dust analogs in the lab, we constructed a custom apparatus, which consists of a vacuum chamber, a cooling mechanism to vary the temperature of dusts in an astronomically interesting range (7-50 Kelvin), and a long-wavelength spectrometer. Since completing the construction of the custom apparatus, we are currently assembling and testing the …
A Qualitative Analysis Of Rural Health Literacy, Lorraine C. Adams
A Qualitative Analysis Of Rural Health Literacy, Lorraine C. Adams
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Health literacy (i.e., the ability to seek, use, and understand health related information) plays a paramount role in receiving quality health care. Lower health literacy levels have also been associated with worse overall health outcomes (Paasche-Orlow, 2007; Jordan, 2009). Interestingly, rural populations tend to have lower health literacy levels compared to their urban counterparts (Zahnd, 2009). Therefore the purpose of this study was to examine potential contributing factors to rural populate’s lower health literacy levels. Ten structured, qualitative interviews were conducted on rural residents from Powell, Sanders, Beaverhead, and Flathead counties who had been discharged from St. Patrick’s Hospital Missoula, …

Connecting To Write The Research Paper: History Behind The Bluest Eye, Jeanette Toomer, Jeanette Toomer
Student Success in Writing Conference (1999-2021)
This workshop focuses on investigating the historical background of a fictional novel to develop a research paper based on this text to world connection. Students read The Bluest Eye which makes several allusions to the world of segregation and racism in the 1940s. Over several weeks students prewrite, develop an outline and research a societal problem evident in Morrison’s novel. Under the controlling idea of “social change” they develop a thesis statement exploring segregation, violence against women or the Great Migration. Common Core Standards drive the students’ reading research and writing process. Facilitator models the curriculum plan, student portfolios and …

Investigation Of Retrieved Snow Depth By Microwave Remote Sensing With In-Situ Field Data, Yongwon Kim, Hiroyuki Enomoto
Research Posters
AMSR-E/AMSR2 is provided the brightness temperature data with more channels, higher spatial resolution and frequent coverage. New snow algorism techniques of remote sensing for snow depth and snow-melting area can be carried out using these in-situ data. We have conducted snow survey from 2006 to now, which is mainly on March and occasionally on January and April/May when seasonal snow melts. The sites are located at an interval of ca. 32-km along the Dalton Highway (Fig. 1). Snow density, snow depth and temperature were measured in snow-pit wall observation at each site. Snow water equivalent (SWE) was calculated by multiplying …
Effect Of Thaw Depth On Fluxes Of Co2 And Ch4 In Manipulated Arctic Coastal Tundra Of Barrow, Alaska, Yongwon Kim, Walter C. Oechel
Effect Of Thaw Depth On Fluxes Of Co2 And Ch4 In Manipulated Arctic Coastal Tundra Of Barrow, Alaska, Yongwon Kim, Walter C. Oechel
Research Posters
The manipulation treatment consisted of draining, controlling, and flooding treated sections by adjusting standing water. Inundation increased CH4 emission by a factor of 4.3 compared to non-flooded sections. This may be due to the decomposition of organic matter under a limited oxygen environment by saturated standing water. On the other hand, CO2 emission in the dry section was 3.9-fold higher than in others. CH4 emission tends to increase with deeper thaw depth, which strongly depends on the water table; however, CO2 emission is not related to thaw depth. Quotients of global warming potential (GWPCO2) (dry/control) and GWPCH4 (wet/control) increased by …

Water Poverty In Disadvantaged Communities In California, Alyssa J. Galik
Water Poverty In Disadvantaged Communities In California, Alyssa J. Galik
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
California, the eighth largest economy in the world, has nearly one million residents that lack daily access to clean drinking water, yet it recently became the first state in the US to declare water a human right through the passage of 2013 Assembly Bill 685. The majority of water quality violations take place in the rural San Joaquin Valley in unincorporated, low-income communities, which have difficulties accessing clean, drinking water due to issues including quality, affordability, and physical availability. The role of community participation in improving water poverty has been studied extensively in developing countries but its impact is infrequently …
“Against The Ebony Of Her Skin”: The Impact Of Harlem Renaissance Blues Culture And Literature On The Development Of Womanism, Maia Y. Rodriguez
“Against The Ebony Of Her Skin”: The Impact Of Harlem Renaissance Blues Culture And Literature On The Development Of Womanism, Maia Y. Rodriguez
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
This paper will investigate the ways in which the music and writers spurred by the explosion of African American culture that was the Harlem Renaissance were responsible for propagating the rhetoric and fresh representations of African American womanhood that would later be incorporated into the theoretical framework of black feminism championed by critics like bell hooks and brought into fruition as the recognizable school of womanism by Alice Walker. I will argue, using the literature of “proto-feminist” Harlem Renaissance writers Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston as well as the literature of womanist writers like Walker, that without the Harlem …
Differential Survival Of Chaparral Shrub Species In Response To Severe Drought, Hannah Dario, Stephen D. Davis
Differential Survival Of Chaparral Shrub Species In Response To Severe Drought, Hannah Dario, Stephen D. Davis
Biology
In this experiment, we examined how the plants in the Santa Monica Mountains are responding to the driest period in recorded history for California. Our hypothesis was that plant species with the deepest roots would have highest survivorship. We thought this because deep-rooted shrubs will have greater access to soil moisture. This hypothesis was tested by collecting data on plant survival, in a mixed chaparral stand, containing eleven species, growing in the Green Valley Preserve off of Stunt road, in the Santa Monica Mountains. The chaparral stand was 21 years old, having last burned in 1993 (Old Topanga Canyon Fire). …
Chronic Condition Predictors Of Emergency Room Expenditures Among Uninsured People Aged 45-64, Julie Summey, Lu Shi
Chronic Condition Predictors Of Emergency Room Expenditures Among Uninsured People Aged 45-64, Julie Summey, Lu Shi
Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)
Background: Chronic health conditions among the uninsured aged 45-64 are likely to cause high costs for Medicare when these individuals turn 65. The purpose of this study was to explore which chronic conditions are associated with emergency room expenditures among uninsured people aged 45-64 living in the U.S. Methods: We used the MEPS 2012 household component data to estimate the association between specific chronic conditions and ER expenditure (N=1102). To deal with the left-censored distribution of the dependent variable “total ER expenditure,†we used a Tobit regression model to determine which chronic conditions predict ER expenditures among uninsured people aged …
Chronic Condition Predictors Of Emergency Room Expenditures Among Uninsured Americans Aged 45-64, Julie Summey, Lu Shi
Chronic Condition Predictors Of Emergency Room Expenditures Among Uninsured Americans Aged 45-64, Julie Summey, Lu Shi
Health, Education and Human Development Awards
When strategizing how the U.S. can control Medicare costs in the future, policymakers and researchers focus their attention on middle-aged adults and specifically on the uninsured population.1 As the literature well documents, lacking health insurance is a major barrier for access to care, and as a result, the uninsured are more likely to have unmet medical needs. 1 2 Since chronic health conditions among the uninsured aged 45-64 are likely to create high costs for Medicare when these individuals turn 65, employers and state governments are working to create plans to cover the uninsured in hopes of reducing future costs.3 …

The preventive health benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and children are widely recognized. Leading health authorities recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life.
Though breastfeeding rates in the United States have been increasing for the past decade, significant disparities continue across race and socioeconomic status.
Mindfulness, Self-Regulatory Capacity, And Regulation Of Health Behaviors - 2015 Award Winner, Elizabeth Mccrary
Mindfulness, Self-Regulatory Capacity, And Regulation Of Health Behaviors - 2015 Award Winner, Elizabeth Mccrary
Russell Library Undergraduate Research Award
Mindfulness, the trait or state of heightened attention and awareness of the present moment, has been connected to a wide variety of self-regulatory behaviors, including health behaviors. Specifically, mindfulness has been linked to smoking cessation (Heppner et al., 2015), reduced alcohol misuse (Murphy & MacKillop, 2011), and reduced substance abuse (Witkiewitz & Bowen, 2010). Additionally, mindfulness-based dialectical behavior therapy has been successful in teaching affect regulation skills to patients with binge eating disorder (BED). BED patients were also more adept in using these regulation skills during negative affect experiences (Kristeller, Baer, & Quillian-Wolever, 2006). Even though research links mindfulness to …

The autistic child: developmental diversity in the early childcare classroom
Olivia Harrison
Autism is a growing factor in society. Today 1 child in 68 is born with an autism spectrum disorder, a 119% increase from the year 2000. Autistic children develop atypically and often non-autistic children are alarmed by the diverse and occasionally erratic behaviors of their peers simply because they are unfamiliar with developmental differences.
While there are many lovely children’s books written FOR autistic children, there is less of a market for addressing the concept of autism in the classroom as a whole. In order to facilitate an …
When Active Learning Goes Flat, Lindsey Mclean, Elisa Acosta
When Active Learning Goes Flat, Lindsey Mclean, Elisa Acosta
Librarian Publications & Presentations
What happens when an active learning activity goes flat? You rapidly transform your lackluster exercise into an engaging activity midway through the semester! In this presentation we will discuss our instructional design efforts for a required in-person library instruction session for 73 Rhetorical Arts classes (1,273 freshmen). We used elements from both the hybrid approach and gamification techniques. Hybrid, or blended learning is a method of instruction in which students learn through a combination of face-to-face instruction and computer-mediated activities. The paper-based, active learning exercise the students completed in class was “gamified” and transformed into a digital learning object to …
