Advanced Maternal Age And The Correlation Between Cesarean Birth Rates, Hope Campbell Aug 2017

Advanced Maternal Age And The Correlation Between Cesarean Birth Rates, Hope Campbell

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the mean age of mothers at the delivery of their first child has increased from 24.9 years to 26.3 years between 2000 and 2014. Miscarriages, financial instability, lack of a partner and more effective contraception may also be associated with the increasing rate of delayed pregnancy. The increasing rate of delayed pregnancy could contribute to the higher rate of cesarean section deliveries in women over the age of 35 which could lead to an increased risk to mother and fetus. The rising cesarean rate is associated with rising costs and …

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Provider Barriers to Delivery of Quality Transgender Healthcare

Background: Transgender encompasses anyone who does not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. Due to the previous DSM-IV Gender Identity Disorder diagnosis, transgender was considered a pathology. The 2013 DSM-V switch to Gender Dysphoria depathologized the transgender identity. Subsequently, transgender care is now covered by insurance and considered part of expected patient care when before it was not covered. This research study focuses on provider reported barriers to trans healthcare over patient reported, though some patient reports were used in conjunction with provider perspective.

Objective: The objective of this …

Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On Prenatal Nutrition And Postpartum Depression, Kelsey Moran

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common complication of childbirth, affecting 11-20% of women who give birth each year. Women suffering from PPD may experience feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and anxiety related to birth, and may think of suicide or harm towards their baby. Nutrition plays a key role in the onset, severity, and duration of general depression. Although nutritional deficiencies can be prevalent among all Americans, they disproportionately affect low-income individuals. There is currently a knowledge gap regarding postpartum depression causation in low-income women. It is important to understand the cause of postpartum depression to provide appropriate intervention …

Barriers To Oer Adoption (And Possible Solutions), Amanda Hovious

Texas Conference on Institutional Repositories

Type of presentation: Full Session

ABSTRACT

In 2012, at the World Open Educational Resources Congress in Paris, UNESCO declared that governments within their powers should develop strategies and policies that promote open educational resources (OER) as an avenue toward the universal right of equity of access to education. Though OER has increased exponentially in availability since that time, there remain confounding factors that act as barriers to OER adoption, such as ease of discovery, ease of adaptability and re-use, and uncertainty regarding quality and sustainability. Numerous studies have examined these barriers, and these studies should be of concern to librarians …

Making News Real: Learning From Academe, Desiree Depriest

SIDLIT Conference

The 21st century explosion of instantaneous electronic news information via technology devices has proven convenient and catastrophic. In addition to the traditional Associated Press and Reuters, there is a spike in independent news streams with far right, far left and fuzzy middle agendas, which may or may not be accurate. Academic information, on the other hand, maintains a strong distinction between what is considered a primary source, acceptable research methods, and peer review processes to determine the accuracy of information that moves the body of knowledge forward versus information stirred up in a cauldron of private agendas. The question to …

Creating A Learning Community In The Sciences, Bart De Stasio, Beth De Stasio, Brian Piasecki

Diversity Conference 2017

Science is a collaborative discipline that is best learned through discussion, experimentation and group activity. But several groups of students—particularly students of color, first generation college students and some international students— are often marginalized in our classrooms, labs and are left out of study groups. Their voices aren’t heard, their points of view and interpretations aren’t always appreciated and the learning of these students is thwarted. To address these issues, we have been involved in forming and designing two groups that have been functioning for the past two years: LEDS (Lawrentians Enhancing Diversity in the Sciences) and BioCore, a supplementary …

Creating Supportive Digital Experiences For Diverse Users, Jane Berliss-Vincent

Diversity Conference 2017

Over the past 30 years, technology use has become an increasingly ubiquitous part of education. However, it is frequently implemented as one-size-fits-all, which many students may find to be more a barrier than a benefit. This session will use simulations, exercises and discussion to explore some of these barriers and suggest ways to address them in multiple types of school environments.
