Supporting Rural Student Success In Higher Education, Peggy A. Lumpkin Oct 2017

Supporting Rural Student Success In Higher Education, Peggy A. Lumpkin

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Founded in the late 1880’s, this college originally served students exclusively from the surrounding Appalachian region. Faculty to student ratios average 18:1 and the number of students served average 1000-1200. Today, although the college serves a more diverse student body geographically, it still endeavors to retain the culture of personal attention and support from faculty and staff. These attributes make the college attractive to students from rural communities who often are first generation college students. Striving to survive against competition from both well-funded larger private colleges as well as from state colleges and universities, places pressure on college administration to …

The presenters shared lessons learned from using OCLC WorldShare Management System (WMS) Analytics to gather statistics and data for both internal and external reporting purposes. Existing WMS reporting functionality simplifies special projects such as inventories and clean-up initiatives. However, both Collection Evaluation and Report Designer have limitations that make getting accurate collections numbers difficult due to gaps in the available data.

What We Stand To Gain: Librarians Leading Collaborative Assignment Design, Kacy Lundstrom, Rachel Wishkoski, Erin Davis Sep 2017

What We Stand To Gain: Librarians Leading Collaborative Assignment Design, Kacy Lundstrom, Rachel Wishkoski, Erin Davis

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

One of many shifting areas for academic librarians is their role in the design of research assignments. While many librarians possess both expertise and the desire to engage in assignment design, doing so in practice requires deep collaboration and careful role negotiation with discipline faculty. Faculty, who themselves have varied degrees of formal pedagogical training, may not recognize librarians as teachers with this instructional design expertise. Finding the “collaboration sweet spot” can be difficult to achieve in spite of best intentions (Junisabai, Lowe, & Tagge, 2016). However, librarian participation in creating authentic, scaffolded research opportunities is crucial if we are …

Factors That Influence Intrinsic Motivation On Program Completion For Rehabilitative Patients: An Integrative Review Of Literature, Zareen Khan, Akif Khan

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: Rehabilitation is often focused on improving an individual’s physical or functional capabilities after a traumatic injury. However, successful rehabilitation adherence and program completion has shown to have attributes of intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation, as defined by Deci and Ryan (1985), is a learned behavioral trait that is driven by an internal force and produces a rewarding outcome.

Objectives: The purpose of an integrative literature review was to determine which factors influence intrinsic motivation among patients enrolled in rehabilitation programs. Thus, advancing the knowledge of clinicians to explore and utilize its applications with their clients; ultimately aiding them to …

The Role Of Spirituality Among Schizophrenia Patients: An Integrated Literature Review, Sarah Bieber Aug 2017

The Role Of Spirituality Among Schizophrenia Patients: An Integrated Literature Review, Sarah Bieber

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: Over the past 30 years, the field of psychology has evolved to become more receptive towards spirituality as an influential concept in the recovery of many mental health illnesses. The role of spirituality as it relates to recovery for patients living with schizophrenia, however, has not been effectively explored. In order to induce a spiritual sense, one must have an ability to think and reflect abstractly; however, this requirement conflicts with the schizophrenic mind’s preference for concrete thinking. It is questionable whether patients with schizophrenia regard the role of spirituality as it relates to their recovery in the …

Mesenchymal Stem Cells As An Alternative To Knee Replacement Surgery, Michelle Villegas-Downs Aug 2017

Mesenchymal Stem Cells As An Alternative To Knee Replacement Surgery, Michelle Villegas-Downs

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that causes disability and persistent pain. Currently, treatment modalities for osteoarthritis focus on pain reduction and symptom management, but do little to address disease modification. Presently, the treatment of choice for knee osteoarthritis is total knee replacement surgery. Total knee replacement surgery carries significant risks and does not guarantee improvement in joint pain or function. In the last decade, advances in regenerative medicine have proposed the use of mesenchymal stem cells as a treatment strategy for joint preservation, cartilage regeneration and improved joint function in patients with osteoarthritis. The aim of this integrative literature …

The Meaning of Will to Live in Patients: An Integrative literature review

Jeanne Burdette

DePaul University

Abstract

Background: The will to live (WTL) is the desire, determination and effort to survive as defined by Mosby’s Medical Dictionary, 8th edition (2009). According to Tataryn & Chochinov (2002), we know that the WTL can impact the trajectory of a terminal illness and “has been shown to vary considerably in relatively brief periods of time during the final course of a terminal illness” (p 370). Yet little is known about the concept. Health care professionals (HCPs) can benefit from increased knowledge …

Barriers To Advance Directives, Anna Malia Connor Ticknor Aug 2017

Barriers To Advance Directives, Anna Malia Connor Ticknor

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: Advanced directives (ADs) are legal documents that allows an individual to document their specific wishes for medical care should they be unable to speak for themselves. The use of advanced directives has implications directing the course of end-of-life care affecting both the cost and direction of care. Advance directives can clarify confusion and provide guidance, but their implementation is not clearly defined within the healthcare system. Despite their implications, multiple surveys indicate these documents have limited use within the United States for reasons that are not easily isolated including lack of knowledge of advanced directives and lack of …

Interventions That Decrease Stigma In The Mentally Ill Adolescent Population: An Integrative Review Of Literature, Anita Stefanek

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: One in five adolescents live with a mental health condition, with half developing the condition by age 14 and three quarters by age 24. Many adolescents choose not to seek treatment due to the stigma associated with being labeled by their peer groups. Due to the cost of delayed treatment, as well as the impact of public and self-stigma on the individual, research on interventions that seek to decrease stigma levels in adolescents is necessary.

Objectives: To identify what types of interventions currently exist within the high school setting that help decrease stigma in the mentally ill adolescent …

Non-Pharmacological Interventions For Dementia Patients Experiencing Agitation, Beata Prendergast Aug 2017

Non-Pharmacological Interventions For Dementia Patients Experiencing Agitation, Beata Prendergast

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: Several studies suggest that nonpharmacological interventions are preferred for first-line therapy when managing symptoms such as agitation associated with dementia. Patients experiencing dementia most likely develop behavioral symptoms throughout the course of their illnesses. These symptoms include agitation, which affects their quality of life. Current pharmacological treatment modalities are not always effective, and thus the significant shift to address agitation through non-pharmacological interventions is necessary.

Objectives: The purpose of this integrative literature was to explore the various research studies that have been conducted regarding several non-pharmacological interventions that can be beneficial in managing the dementia individual …

The Effects Of Service Dogs In Patients With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Angie Slowik

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: Of the 2 million veterans that have been deployed to combat zones, 13-20% of them most likely have developed posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Only half of the returning combat veterans seek care, and only about 40% experience significant improvement of their symptoms of PTSD. One potentially effective intervention for PTSD has been the use of service dogs. Veterans have reported that service dogs have decreased their PTSD symptoms when they could not find relief from other PTSD interventions.

Objectives: The purpose of this literature review is to determine if service dogs decrease symptoms of depression in …
