Implementation Of A School-Wide, Epa-Based Acting Internship Curriculum, Adam Garber Jan 2018

Implementation Of A School-Wide, Epa-Based Acting Internship Curriculum, Adam Garber

Health Sciences Education Symposium

Objectives. The core entrustable professional activities for entering residency (Core EPAs) were established by the AAMC as a framework to assess competency. The Acting Internship (AI) rotation is an excellent space to assess core EPAs, however many institutions have no structured AI curriculum. Our goal is to develop a standardized, school-wide AI curriculum that includes evaluation and assessment of designated core EPAs. Method. At our institution, two non-departmental AI directors were directed to oversee all AI rotations across the school and implement goals, objectives, and curriculum focused around specific core EPAs. A clinical skills-focused curriculum combining a mix of didactic …

Emergency Medicine Elective Impact On Third-Year Medical Student Specialty Choice, Nathan Lewis Jan 2018

Emergency Medicine Elective Impact On Third-Year Medical Student Specialty Choice, Nathan Lewis

Health Sciences Education Symposium

Emergency Medicine (EM) is a competitive, sought-after specialty among medical students (1). National standardized curricula have been developed for both third-year (M3) and fourth-year (M4) rotations (2-3), however, there is variability in course implementation (4). Additionally, it is unclear to what extent earlier rotations help students choose a specialty. We developed a two-week elective course to allow M3 students exposure to EM earlier than previously allowed at our medical school. Students were asked to complete an entry survey describing their specialty interests and sources of influence. During the course, students were encouraged to observe the environment and speak to providers, …

Powerpoint: Critical Engagement: Colin Kaepernick, Mason Sargent, Tate Henrikson, Sean N. Bennington, Justin M. Porter, Nicolete D. Moyo

Womanist Ethics

Critical Engagement is the use of practical strategies and pedagogical methods [that] challenge dominant intellectual legacies, theological resources, and ideologies that undermine the goals of Womanist ethics, namely, the empowerment of black women. It is a concept created by Floyd Thomas, in whose writings, it is one of the five Womanist tenants. We decided to base Colin Kaepernick’s ‘take a knee’ movement as an example of Critical Engagement. Using this perspective, we examined the various aspects of the movement and analyzed the effects on American culture and society through a Womanist lens.

A Child’S Perspective: Social Development, Gender Creative Parenting, And Pk-12 Schooling, Braden Butka Jan 2018

A Child’S Perspective: Social Development, Gender Creative Parenting, And Pk-12 Schooling, Braden Butka

Spring Presentation of Undergraduate Research

In my study, A Child’s Perspective: Social Development, Gender Creative Parenting, and PK-12 Schooling, my central theme is gender creativity in schools and at home, and how these things interact and impact social development. Many researchers have looked into gender, social development, home and school expectations, and identity and roles, however I have yet to find research on the study of gender (and creativity within it specifically) and how it relates to schooling or social development, let alone all three topics combined. My research adds to many topic tables, while I believe simultaneously creating it's own table because I bring …

Voices From Detention: An Exploration Of Undocumented Immigrants’ Journeys, Michaela Malboeuf Jan 2018

Voices From Detention: An Exploration Of Undocumented Immigrants’ Journeys, Michaela Malboeuf

Spring Presentation of Undergraduate Research

Distinct differences exist between the phrases “criminal” and “immigrant” but moral panic has caused people to gravitate to use one term to address illegal immigration; Crimmigration. The current study seeks to contribute to the limited field of qualitative research on illegal immigration commonalities in migration experiences and characteristics of the immigrant. Qualitative semi structured interviews of detained men in an Immigration Detention Center will be conducted in efforts to illustrate the migration and detainment experience. This exploratory research contributes to the reformation of current immigration legislation and social perceptions of immigrants in the United States in hopes to eliminate the …

“‘Self-Creators’ And ‘Self-Destroyers’: Shifting The Romanticized Image Of The Soldier Prevalent In American Media, Amy S. Chafee Jan 2018

“‘Self-Creators’ And ‘Self-Destroyers’: Shifting The Romanticized Image Of The Soldier Prevalent In American Media, Amy S. Chafee

Spring Presentation of Undergraduate Research

The American media, through movies and books, often perpetuates a romanticized image of the soldier. Each solder, endowed with exceptional fortitude, selflessness, and resilience, willingly makes sacrifices for others despite tremendous – and sometimes unbelievable— obstacles. Other times, soldiers are vilified as belonging to a corrupt institution with a secretive agenda. The works of Deanna Schwartz and Daniel Corrie, the authors of I Couldn't Save My Boy and Book of Years, find a middle ground among these typical representations of soldiers, as they show soldiers both exhibiting great courage while dealing with hardships, yet showing vulnerability as they care for …

Contemporary Shifts In Pilgrimage Practices And The Effects On Traditional Management Practices At Sacred Sites: An Irish Perspective, Vreny Enongene, Kevin Griffin Jan 2018

Contemporary Shifts In Pilgrimage Practices And The Effects On Traditional Management Practices At Sacred Sites: An Irish Perspective, Vreny Enongene, Kevin Griffin

Conference papers

Despite growing interest in pilgrimage practices, scholars have argued that some changes in the traditional practice of pilgrimage are seen among modern pilgrims (Enongene & Griffin, 2017, p. 26), to include changes in the needs, expectations and purchasing behaviour of the typical faith-based visitor (Kartal et al., 2015). Likewise, the growing need for entertaining experiences and satisfaction from the spiritual renewal services as posited by Ambrose & Ovesenik (2011), is in stark contrast to traditional management practices at sacred sites. As well as pilgrimages, which involved leaving behind the pleasures of the earthly world and instead desiring the supernatural/heaven more …

Conference Papers

Purpose: The aim of this study was to ascertain if there is agreement in the measurement of central corneal vault (CCV) under a scleral lens, between estimations made using a slit lamp biomicroscope (SLB) and measurements made using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).

Method: 30 images were taken of CCV under various scleral lenses using a SLB and an AS-OCT. Estimations of CCV from SLB photographs were made using known thicknesses of the scleral lenses used and imagej software. The in-built measurement callipers was used to measure CCV on the AS-OCT. Right eyes were imaged on the AS-OCT first …

Electrochemical And Spectroscopic Study Of Peptide-Template Melanins, Daniel Courter, Olivia Rossi, Zhen Tian Jan 2018

Electrochemical And Spectroscopic Study Of Peptide-Template Melanins, Daniel Courter, Olivia Rossi, Zhen Tian

Honors Theses and Capstones

Melanins are organic polymers made up of 5,6-dihydroxyindole carboxylic acid (DHICA) and 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI). Biochemical systems synthesize melanins through a complex reaction pathway. Previous research exhibited that naturally-occurring melanins (NatMel) and their synthetic analogues (SynMel) can potentially serve as electrode materials for aqueous charge storage devices. Small surface area creates technical challenges for these melanins as charge storage materials. This research herein demonstrates that the structure of melanins can affect the charge storage capacities of monovalent Na+cations and divalent Mg2+ cations. 2-D sheet-like peptide melanins (PepMel) were synthesized into tripeptides consisting of aspartic acid (D), phenylalanine (F), …

Stress Less With Art Therapy, Delaney M. Rogers

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

According to the American Art Therapy Association, art therapy is "a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem.” While creating art on your own at home is not the exact same as official art therapy, it has been shown that this form of art can help to decrease stress levels. For my Honors Capstone Project I have reviewed the research and studies …

The Earth's Magnetosphere, Soren Ormseth Jan 2018

The Earth's Magnetosphere, Soren Ormseth

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) is an Earth orbiting satellite launched in 2008; designed to map the boundary of our Solar System. In this presentation, we focus on how data collected by the IBEX-Hi sensor can be used to map the distribution of hot ions within the Earth's magnetosphere. As opposed to other satellites, IBEX images the magnetosphere from afar rather than by going through it. An improvement on the previous imaging techniques was developed, and we compare the new results to the old.

The Effects Of Chitosan On Resveratrol-Loaded Zein Nanoparticles, Brian Sohn Jan 2018

The Effects Of Chitosan On Resveratrol-Loaded Zein Nanoparticles, Brian Sohn

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound showing health benefits, including anti-carcinogenic, anti-microbial, anti-HIV/AIDS, neuro-protective, and cardio-protective activities. It has been proposed as a promising dietary supplement or functional ingredient in foods to lower the prevalence of many chronic diseases. However, due to the molecule’s chemical instability, low bioavailability, and poor water solubility, its application was vastly limited. Therefore, extensive research has been conducted regarding microencapsulation of resveratrol. In this study, resveratrol was double encapsulated with zein, a prolamine protein found in maize, and chitosan, a hydrophilic, linear polysaccharide derived from chitin via a deacetylation reaction. Due to their biocompatible, …
