The University of Nebraska at Omaha's Technology Assisted Performance Ensemble (or TAPE) is UNO's first Laptop Orchestra. TAPE focuses on electronic music as well as exploring the boundaries of what we understand to be music. Combining traditional music theory and digital synthesis creates a new genre of academic music that is on the cutting edge of research in both fields of music and technology. TAPE was founded by Dr. Seth Shafer and Nicholas Spencer with initial funding by the University of Nebraska at Omaha's FUSE grant.
Experienced Sexual Assault In The Military: An Exploration Of The Organizational Factors Influencing Under-Reporting And Consequences When Victims Report, Medicine Flower Blue Star
Experienced Sexual Assault In The Military: An Exploration Of The Organizational Factors Influencing Under-Reporting And Consequences When Victims Report, Medicine Flower Blue Star
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Sexual assault of both male and female service members is a pervasive and serious problem. In 2017, based on data from the U.S. Department of Defense, 5,200 service members reported sexual assault, representing a 10% increase from 2016. Scholars, military and government leaders are concerned that the prevalence of sexual assault is underestimated due to under-reporting. O’Brien, Keith, and Shoemaker (2015), for example, point to a 2013 report by the U.S. Department of Defense, which estimates that 67% of women and 81% of men do not report their military sexual assaults. One purpose of this study is to explore the …

Food Insecurity : The Student Experience, B.J. Fletcher
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Food insecurity exists on college campuses among college students. Prior studies have considered the prevalence of food insecurity among college students; this study aims to expand on these past studies by considering how college students experience food insecurity. The study takes a phenomenological approach to understand how students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha experience food insecurity, including the experiences and challenges students face when it comes to being food insecure and the barriers students face in addressing food insecurity. In-depth interviews with six students, ranging from undergraduate to doctoral level students, were conducted. Horizontalization, clusters of meanings, textural …
Futurism In Fashion: What Does That Mean?, Jonathan Orozco
Futurism In Fashion: What Does That Mean?, Jonathan Orozco
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
In fashion, the term ‘futuristic’ is often used to describe avant-garde clothing designs. It could refer to several things, such as the clothing’s method of production, the materials used, or the garment’s design. Futurism can even refer to the 20th century Italian art movement, and indeed, this movement addressed the problem of designing fashion for the 20th century. We would learn much by examining Futurist fashions in order to understand its legacy in relation to contemporary fashion designers viewed as futuristic today. This paper will review this legacy by looking at five specific examples—Italian Futurists and their contribution …

Skin and core temperature were recorded during the 1-hour tolerance trials. Tympanic …
Effects Of Rangeland Management On Milkweed Grazing And Monarch Conservation, Brittany Poynor
Effects Of Rangeland Management On Milkweed Grazing And Monarch Conservation, Brittany Poynor
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Cattle typically avoid consuming milkweed plants that contain high levels of toxic defense compounds, and therefore many people assume cattle avoid all milkweeds. However, common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) contains only moderate levels of toxic compounds, and observations suggest that cattle regularly consume common milkweed and may even preferentially graze flowers and leaves of this species. These observations directly relate to efforts to add over one billion stems of milkweed to the central USA for monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) conservation. If cattle intentionally consume common milkweed and other milkweed species, and if certain management practices can reduce …
Data Analytics Pipeline For Rna Structure Analysis Via Shape, Quinn Nelson
Data Analytics Pipeline For Rna Structure Analysis Via Shape, Quinn Nelson
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is a cardiovirulent enterovirus from the family Picornaviridae. The RNA genome houses an internal ribosome entry site (IRES) in the 5’ untranslated region (5’UTR) that enables cap-independent translation. Ample evidence suggests that the structure of the 5’UTR is a critical element for virulence. We probe RNA structure in solution using base-specific modifying agents such as dimethyl sulfate as well as backbone targeting agents such as N-methylisatoic anhydride used in Selective 2’-Hydroxyl Acylation Analyzed by Primer Extension (SHAPE). We have developed a pipeline that merges and evaluates base-specific and SHAPE data together with statistical analyses that provides confidence …
Marmosets Respond Consistently To Threats Across Contexts, Sarah Carp
Marmosets Respond Consistently To Threats Across Contexts, Sarah Carp
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Behavioral traits, such as how adventurous an individual is, can vary both across individuals and within an individual across contexts. However, there is evidence that individuals are stable across time in how they respond to certain stimuli. This consistency in behavioral responses to similar environments is termed a behavioral syndrome, or set of correlated behavior. We assessed the degree to which individual marmoset monkeys were consistent across four behavioral tests that measured different aspects of novelty seeking. The four tasks included exposure to a novel object in a familiar environment, exposure to a novel environment, behavioral flexibility in response to …

I Am The Master Of My Fate: How One’S Locus Of Control Influences Entry Type And Level Of Extremist Participation, Steven Windisch
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The most pertinent question in terrorism research is not who becomes a terrorist, but who becomes a bomb-maker as opposed to a gunman or a suicide-bomber. To provide a fuller understanding of the mechanisms involved in the process of accepting extremist beliefs, it is essential we embrace a larger view of extremism by linking the psychological antecedents of radicalization with the various types and levels of extremist participation. The current article addresses this issue through an analysis of historiometric data of 261 Salafi Jihadist-inspired extremists in the United States. In doing so, we seek to answer the following question: To …
Pilot Study Of Empathy In Adults, Libby Moberg
Pilot Study Of Empathy In Adults, Libby Moberg
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Empathy is of critical public health importance due to its association with relationship satisfaction and well-being (Davis & Oathout, 1987; Davis, 1983). There is growing evidence that bilingual individuals may have higher levels of empathy (Javor, 2016). One potential mechanism for this relationship is that bilingual individuals tend to have higher levels of executive functioning (Costa et al, 2008), which is linked to higher empathy because individuals are able to more easily adopt others’ perspectives. Previous studies examining this question have largely relied on self-report questionnaires assessing empathy as a general tendency (i.e., trait). No studies have examined differences in …

Abstract
With the explosive use of wearable devices, there is an urgent need to find ways to utilize the data collected by such devices. In many cases, wearable devices contain accelerometers that collected different types of data. It is not always clear which data points can be used to extract information that can be used to provide useful knowledge about the health of the individuals. In this study, we proposed to research, implement, and comparing various feature selection techniques used for analyzing on gait …
Large Scale Dynamical Model Of Macrophage/Hiv Interactions, Matthew M. Froid
Large Scale Dynamical Model Of Macrophage/Hiv Interactions, Matthew M. Froid
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Properties emerge from the dynamics of large-scale molecular networks that are not discernible at the individual gene or protein level. Mathematical models - such as probabilistic Boolean networks - of molecular systems offer a deeper insight into how these emergent properties arise. Here, we introduce a non-linear, deterministic Boolean model of protein, gene, and chemical interactions in human macrophage cells during HIV infection. Our model is composed of 713 nodes with 1583 interactions between nodes and is responsive to 38 different inputs including signaling molecules, bacteria, viruses, and HIV viral particles. Additionally, the model accurately simulates the dynamics of over …

Perceptions Of Physical Activity While Breastfeeding: A Mixed Methods Approach, Kailey Snyder
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Background: Being physically active and breastfeeding can greatly support a new mother’s physiological and psychological health. However, within the United States, only 35% of women are maintaining their pre-pregnancy physical activity after childbirth and only 31% of infants are being breastfed at 12 months of age. Preliminary investigations suggest barriers such as lack of time and knowledge hinder a breastfeeding woman’s ability to be physically active however more research is needed. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore women’s perceptions of physical activity while breastfeeding. Methods: This mixed methods study utilized quantitative (survey) and qualitative (interview) measures, both …

Mobility-Based Models For Advancing Diagnostic/Predictive Healthcare, Elham Rastegari
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Functional ability has been always considered as one of the important determining factors of individuals’ health and quality of life. Traditional movement analysis systems require expensive facilities and frequent visits for patients to specialized laboratories. Portability and affordability of wearable sensors along with their improved accuracy and capability of monitoring movement during daily activities make them a potential alternative for analyzing mobility patterns for clinical and health assessment purposes. Wearable-based movement data, when combined with other relevant clinical or laboratory data, could enhance evidence-based healthcare and data-driven Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS). Utilizing the data from wearable devices, many researchers …

Organizational Power And Organizational Tolerance Of Sexual Harassment: The Effects On Bystanders In The Military, Matthew Mcconnell
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Sexual harassment and its negative effects have become a severe problem in the military. According to a RAND Military Workplace Study (2014), in a year an estimate 116,600 members reported being sexually harassed. Though critically important, most research to date has focused on the victims of sexual harassment to the exclusion of examining the effect of sexual harassment on those people observing the harassment. This study will focus on reviewing the consequences of observing sexual harassments on bystander emotional well-being and their attitudes and behavioral tendencies toward the organization. We will particularly focus on the influence of sexual harassment occurring …

Québec is a region where national identity plays a particularly important role, mainly due to its social context, and the historical influence of anglophones on the province’s affairs. This element is reflected in its cinematic productions, as Santoro, Bachand, Desroches and Loiselle stated, “Québec cinema is indeed but the most recent example of the Québécois’ ability to translate their cultural specificity into an enduring and increasingly appreciated source of cultural and economic vitality” (161). Santoro et al further claimed that “Québec cinema is indeed a rich and increasingly diversified art form and has taken its place on the world stage …

Synthesis Of A Sulfur Variant For Treatment Of Trypanosomiasis, Carlos Vera-Esquivel
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Previous work in our lab has found diphenyl ether benzylamines showed a successful response with a micromolar concentration of our lead compound to treat the deadly Trypanosamiosis rhodesience. Furthermore, mammalian cell lines saw promising resistance towards damages. The goal of this study was to synthesize a diphenyl thio benzylamine variant. This variant was more active toward T. b. rhodesience but showed more toxicity to both rat 10 (IC50 mM) and human cell lines (HFF, HC-04, U-2 OS, and HEK293). The selectivity index (ratio of toxicity to activity in the same concentration units (SI)) …

The Energy Paradox Of The Ankle-Foot Complex During Human Walking, Nikolaos Papachatzis, Kota Takahashi
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Flexor hallucis longus (FHL) is a multiarticular muscle that possesses the potential to alter foot’s functional and mechanical behavior, since it performs multiple significant functions during walking (e.g supports the medial longitudinal arch of the foot). The purpose of this study was to determine if the functional changes of the FHL are associated with the foot’s adaptations to the mechanical demands of walking. Backward walking is an experimental method capable of altering how the forces propagate underneath the foot and disrupting the mechanical function of the FHL muscle. We hypothesized that: (1) the muscle activity of the FHL will increase during …

Human Vs. Non-Human Bone: A Non-Destructive Histological Method, Haley N. O'Brien
Human Vs. Non-Human Bone: A Non-Destructive Histological Method, Haley N. O'Brien
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Purpose: Within biological, anatomical systems, bone is a connective tissue that acts as the main supporting internal structure of the body. It directly reflects the soft tissues (e.g. muscles) that surround it in what osteologists call “bone morphologies” and is the primary focus of studies in forensic anthropology and zooarchaeology. Within these disciplines, species identification is one of the first steps in the analysis of bone fragments in both forensic and archaeological contexts. This thesis project focuses on the identification of human vs. non-human bone using a novel, non-destructive histological method assuming a qualitative distinction can be found between species …
Historic Costume In Science Fiction And Fantasy Film, Jennifer Jones
Historic Costume In Science Fiction And Fantasy Film, Jennifer Jones
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Science Fiction and Fantasy are two genres which have captured the imagination of a generation of audiences. Frequently authors of such works base descriptions of clothing, jewelry, and hair on historical costume, giving readers and viewers a sense of connection to the events in the story. The design of these worn articles often furthers the observer’s perceptions of the characters, telling an unspoken story of who they are as people. Additionally, the choice of garments used in a performance informs the observer of the character’s personality, social status and place in society. This poster will investigate the use of historically …
Math Anxiety Among Teachers And Its Impact On Students’ Math Ability, Elina Bergund F
Math Anxiety Among Teachers And Its Impact On Students’ Math Ability, Elina Bergund F
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Fear and anxiety about math can impede an individual’s math achievement, and math anxious people tend to perform worse than their abilities would indicate. When self-doubt and distress occurs, thinking and reasoning can be compromised. In fact, the fears that individuals with math-anxiety experience when they are forced to do math often prevent them from using their knowledge (Ashcraft & Kirk, 2001; Beilock, Gunderson, Ramirez, & Levince, 2010; Chipman, Krantz, & Silver, 1992). Math anxiety is more common among women than men and tends to manifest itself as an unpleasant emotional response to math or the prospect of doing math …
The Musical Collaboration Of Tennessee Williams, Elia Kazan, Alex North In A Street Car Named Desire, Peter Philips
The Musical Collaboration Of Tennessee Williams, Elia Kazan, Alex North In A Street Car Named Desire, Peter Philips
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
In his Notebook Tennessee Williams wrote:
The experimental dramatist must find a method of presenting his passion in an articulate manner… my form is poetic [therefore]…a nonrealistic form must be chosen…[what] I call sculptural drama.
Sculptural drama, Williams’s hypothesis of “plastic theater,” implied the use of all stage resources, to generate a theatrical experience greater than realism. Only by using “other” transformative shapes could poetic imagination define truth, life, or reality.
My work aims to demonstrate music as a universal source of poetic truth. Williams, from his earliest writings, recognized the poetic expressionistic purity of music. Similar expressions are found …
