UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The goal of this project is to investigate the hydrochemistry of the prairie stream system at Glacier Creek Preserve, namely to determine the chemical behavior as it varies over time. Past sampling revealed annual/seasonal trends, which prompted this study investigating possible changes over the course of a day. To accomplish this, water samples were taken hourly for a twelve hour period in September and November 2018, and were analyzed at the Durham Science Center. All samples were obtained at the furthest downstream site available. The main focus was to study alkalinity and dissolved mineral content. Preliminary data suggests that alkalinity …
Impacts Of Mitochondrial-Targeted Antioxidant (Mitoq) On Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial Function In Peripheral Arterial Disease Patients, Jiwon Song
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is an atherosclerotic disease that affects the arteries in the legs, causing decreased blood flow and oxygen transfer capacity to the skeletal muscle. This ischemia in the skeletal muscle in PAD patients may result in increased inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction due to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Inflammation and ROS production have been shown to attenuate vascular function in PAD patients Mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants (such as MitoQ) have been shown to combat ROS and inflammation in various diseases.
Purpose: We sought to examine the impacts of MitoQ intake on vascular function measurements in PAD patients. …

Most employees participate in workplace meetings, and their experiences in the meetings can vary greatly, which can lead to positive or negative effects on both job attitudes and behavior. In this study, we examined the effect that a meeting attendee’s competence in the meeting topic had on their participation in the meeting and their perception of meeting effectiveness. Results indicated those with higher levels of competence in the meeting topic were more likely to participate and through participation found their meeting more effective, and this relationship was stronger when employee dissent in the meetings was high. Leaders should ensure that …

When Creativity Bites: An Analysis Of Far-Left Online Communiques, Laramie Sproles
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
In recent years, terrorism scholars have proposed that the concepts of creativity and innovation can be applied to violent extremism. Similar to conventional organizations, violent extremist groups use creativity to generate products (e.g., attacks) that are unique, surprising, and effective. Despite the increased attention in creativity and innovation among terrorism scholars, few have applied these concepts to understand far-left extremism. The current study builds upon malevolent creativity and violent extremism research to explore the use of creativity in far-left extremist attacks. More specifically, I examine the relationship between indicators of creativity and agricultural target types using a sample of 206 …

University of Nebraska at Omaha, Omaha, NE
Stroke is the primary cause of long-term adult disability in the United States. Some physical limitations that a stroke survivor may encounter are foot drop, unilateral muscle weakness, limited coordination and muscle movement, among other effects that may directly affect gait. To address weakness and poor coordination post-stroke, a cane is commonly used. While a cane can help with balance, coordinating steps with an additional device can prove difficult to learn and may alter natural …

The Role Of Need For Cognition In Creative Thinking Processes, Vignesh Murugavel, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Victoria Kennel
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Expanding on past findings, we examined the effects of need for cognition on different cognitive processes of creative problem-solving. We assessed need for cognition (NFC) and creative abilities of 180 undergraduates in problem construction, idea generation, and idea evaluation tasks. Regression analysis was used to test the effects of NFC on measures of creativity. Our findings indicate that NFC positively relates to the core creative processes of problem construction, idea generation, and idea evaluation. The theoretical and practical implication of our findings are discussed.
Visual Contributions To Balance Control During Gait, Kyle Brozek
Visual Contributions To Balance Control During Gait, Kyle Brozek
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
We propose to isolate the contributions of continuous OF to the orthogonal relationship between balance and gait control during treadmill walking using a series of conditions. Manipulating the direction of OF using a CAREN (Motek Medical, Amsterdam, Netherlands) virtual reality treadmill environment will isolate these visual contributions in human subjects as they walk. We plan to tease out the effect of OF direction on the relationship between gait and balance control by having healthy young adults perform a series of treadmill walking trials while immersed in a VR environment. This will be done by manipulating the direction of walking and …

Targeted Therapy For The Future: The Use Of Novel Antimicrobial Peptides Against P. Aeurginosa, Matthew Froid
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Pathogenic bacteria, such as the gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, are becoming resistant to our current arsenal of antibiotics at an alarming rate. P. aeruginosa is a leading cause of nosocomial acquired infections and is a primary co-morbidity in patients with compromised immune systems. One potential source of new antibiotic agents is antimicrobial peptides. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are small proteins, and some have shown a high degree of efficacy and broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. An experimental AMP that has been developed by Dr. Wang at UNMC, DASamp2, has shown to be effective against virulent bacteria, including P. …
Analysis Of Clustering Algorithms, Ethan Summers
Analysis Of Clustering Algorithms, Ethan Summers
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
In Bioinformatics, choosing the right algorithm for a problem is very important. Choosing the wrong algorithm or one that is less efficient can make or break a project. Analyzing algorithms beforehand is key. The goal of this project is to analyze three clustering algorithms for protein protein interaction networks and compare their function and results. A clustering algorithm takes a dataset, in this case a simulated PPI (protein-protein interaction) network and groups together similar data points based on some similarity criteria. It is important to know the difference between these algorithms to get the desired results.
An Electrooculography Prosthetic Control System, Walker Arce
An Electrooculography Prosthetic Control System, Walker Arce
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
For many surface EMG (sEMG) prosthetic control systems, the muscles on the affected limb are used to trigger the control system. This can lead to fatigue in the user as they have to maintain continuous muscle activation and coactivation in order to achieve prosthetic control [3]. The crux of any prosthetic control system is the human machine interface that is developed, and at present many control systems have complicated interfaces that limit the degrees of freedom of the prosthetics. This study focuses on the development of a low-cost prosthetic control peripheral that is compatible with the prosthetics developed by Dr. …
Applicant Reactions To Gendered Wording In Job Advertisements, Sahra Kaboli-Nejad, Eric Scheller, Carey Ryan
Applicant Reactions To Gendered Wording In Job Advertisements, Sahra Kaboli-Nejad, Eric Scheller, Carey Ryan
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Women account for only 28% of the STEM workforce (Neuhauser, 2014). One contributing factor may be gendered wording in advertisements (e.g., the use of more masculine wording in male-dominated fields). Masculine wording may discourage women from applying for male-dominated STEM careers. Research has shown, for example, that participants perceive there to be more men in occupations that use more masculine than feminine wording in their advertisements, resulting in women finding the jobs less appealing (Gaucher et al., 2011; Horvath & Sczesnya, 2016).
The present research examined whether gendered wording in an advertisement for a male-dominated STEM career affects perceptions of …

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Approximately 300,000 high school students experience a concussion yearly and are the third most common injury for youth football players accounting for 9.6% of all injuries. The current concussion monitoring systems are subjective and rely heavily on symptom recognition by players and coaches. Instrumented helmets fill a gap when subjective monitoring systems fail to recognize concussions. The purpose of this study is to determine the diagnostic accuracy of instrumented helmets and the effectiveness of alerting for a concussion in a youth population. Fifty-five football players from a local high school during the 2018 season who wore instrumented helmets participated. Impact …
The Effect Of Self-Myofascial Release With A Foam Roller On Running Economy, Christos Ziliaskoudis
The Effect Of Self-Myofascial Release With A Foam Roller On Running Economy, Christos Ziliaskoudis
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
BACKGROUND: Running economy is defined as the steady-state O2 consumption for a determined, constant, submaximal speed. It has been described as a complex and multifactorial measure with the ability to explain distance running performance variations that other conventional measures did not. Increased flexibility, as expressed by range of motion, has been related with impaired running economy. Self-myofascial release with foam rollers is gaining popularity in the distance running community as a rehabilitative and performance-enhancing intervention with either acute or systematic application proposing flexibility increases. Although flexibility and running economy have been inversely related and foam rolling interventions are proposing …

Division I Collegiate Male Basketball Player Post-Surgical Cai With Bone Spur Excision: A Case Report, Jacqueline Gutierrez
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
A Division I basketball player planted his foot and injured his ankle. He had a significant history of repeated lateral ankle sprains and was evaluated as having a grade 2 ankle sprain. He was referred for imaging revealing significant damage to a variety of tissues including a talar osteochondral defect and joint degeneration. He opted for surgical repair, however, post-surgical rehabilitation did not improve the athlete and a secondary procedure was necessary to correct complications. The initial procedure was successful to repair ligamentous stability of the joint. But was not sufficient to fully restore the joint to full function.

Physiological Response To Exercise With Naturally-Occurring Carbon Dioxide Exposure, Megan Johnson
Physiological Response To Exercise With Naturally-Occurring Carbon Dioxide Exposure, Megan Johnson
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
BACKGROUND: Carbon dioxide (CO2) plays a normal part in gas exchange and acid-base equilibrium in the human body. With added stress or exposure, CO2 levels can accumulate in the blood and tissues, causing hypercapnia. Research has shown that exposure to CO2 at 4% or 40,000 ppm will cause cardio-respiratory changes, both at rest and during exercise. Lower levels may still cause changes under conditions of added stress, but this has not been elucidated. Preliminary data from our laboratory chamber suggests physiological changes at levels of CO2 reaching 0.08% or 8,000 ppm during experiments with exercising …
Estimating Variations In Metabolic Cost Within The Stride Cycle During Level And Uphill Walking, Arash Mohammadzadeh Gonabadi
Estimating Variations In Metabolic Cost Within The Stride Cycle During Level And Uphill Walking, Arash Mohammadzadeh Gonabadi
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Indirect calorimetry provides the average cost of a stride cycle and prevents from identifying which part of the gait cycle causes increased metabolic cost in patients, however, recent simulation methods allow estimating the time profile of metabolic cost within the stride cycle. In this study, we compare the estimations of the time profile of the metabolic cost of two simulation methods for level and uphill walking. We used kinematic, kinetic and electromyography data from level and uphill walking (one participant) to estimate the time profiles of metabolic cost using the muscle-level metabolic model of Umberger using electromyography and kinematic data …
An Investigation Of Stimulants: Reviewing Their Effects On The Brain, Including Memory And Microglia, Michael Douchey
An Investigation Of Stimulants: Reviewing Their Effects On The Brain, Including Memory And Microglia, Michael Douchey
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Stimulants are a class of drugs that have a variety of effects on the brain, including changes in receptor activity in the brain areas responsible for- memory, attention, emotion, motor control, and the reward pathway. Stimulants may be generally classified by their availability. For example, prescription stimulants, which include drugs such as methylphenidate (Concerta™, Ritalin™) and mixed amphetamine salts (Adderall™), must be prescribed by medical professionals. Another regulated stimulant, albeit one available without a prescription, is nicotine; a highly addictive chemical that is age-restricted by the U.S. federal government. Nicotine is found in tobacco products, and in tobacco-free alternatives including …

Bimanual Coordination Assessment Using Prosthetic Simulators, Chris Copeland
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
There were a total of 1.6 million people living with loss of a limb in 2005. This number is projected to double to 3.6 million by 2050 [1]. While prosthetics aim to enhance the function of these individuals, it is estimated that 45% of pediatric prosthetic users reject their prosthesis [2]. The literature which describes the motor control mechanisms of prosthetic use is sparse and often low-powered due to inadequate number of subjects. However, prosthetic simulators may be a solution to chronically low-powered prosthetic studies by serving as functional homologues. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the efficacy …
