Ancient Dna Extraction And Analysis Of Bone Samples From Orton Quarry Ossuary, Paige N. Plattner Feb 2019

Ancient Dna Extraction And Analysis Of Bone Samples From Orton Quarry Ossuary, Paige N. Plattner

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

The field of molecular anthropology, specifically the focus of ancient DNA analysis of human specimens, affords the opportunity to obtain background information and relationship of specimens and artifacts that may have been otherwise forgotten. The Orton Quarry (36ER243) site is an example of how genetic analysis can restore archeological context to otherwise disassociated remains. The Orton Quarry site is a Late Prehistoric mass grave of human remains along the coast of Lake Erie in Northeastern Pennsylvania. In March 1991, heavy-equipment operators accidentally exposed and destroyed approximately two-thirds of the original ossuary, leaving only the eastern third intact before archeologists arrived. …

Death-Related Grief And Disenfranchised Identity: A Review Of Key Concepts And Findings, Kendyl A. Barney Feb 2019

Death-Related Grief And Disenfranchised Identity: A Review Of Key Concepts And Findings, Kendyl A. Barney

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Throughout this review, I argue that grief is an aspect of identity given its continuous and reoccurring nature. The death of a significant person forces one to reconstruct their own narrative, resituate their relationship with the deceased individual, and develop a new sense of self post-loss. Further, I expand Doka’s (2002) theory of disenfranchised grief to argue that all grief is disenfranchised. I make this argument under the contention that the dominant narrative of grief always assumes the experience to be finite, linear, and a process of detachment. Given the reality that few people actually identify with this conceptualization of …

American Automation Tax Policy, Joshua Thornton Feb 2019

American Automation Tax Policy, Joshua Thornton

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Automation increases production and reduces labor costs, while disrupting industry and employment. Will automation have a substantial long-term negative effect on America’s tax system and human labor market? This paper argues that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 implicitly endorses hiring human labor over automation. First, a brief background of automation is detailed. Second, an analysis of basic tax policy concepts, such as neutrality, efficiency, equity, and simplicity are applied to a specific provision of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. Finally, this paper concludes that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 can assist …

Exploring Biographies Of Niitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy) Moccasins, Michaela A. Shifley Feb 2019

Exploring Biographies Of Niitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy) Moccasins, Michaela A. Shifley

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Footwear is a part of the human experience. Shoes, and moccasins more specifically, at their fundamental level, are about the relationships that form between humans and the ground that they walk on. They are representative of how humans move and interact with and within the world, and thus, moccasins’ study is critical to moving us towards an understanding of our relationships with each other and the world around us. Currently, there is more Plains Indian footwear in museum collections across the world than any other Plains Indian artifact. Yet, despite their overwhelming commonness in museum collections, as well as the …

“You Know, For A Clownfish, He Really Isn’T That Funny”: Implications Of Grief And Masculinity Through A Narrative Analysis Of Finding Nemo, Kendyl A. Barney Feb 2019

“You Know, For A Clownfish, He Really Isn’T That Funny”: Implications Of Grief And Masculinity Through A Narrative Analysis Of Finding Nemo, Kendyl A. Barney

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Cultural norms make up a dominant narrative of bereavement which assumes individuals detach from the deceased and eventually “get over” their grief, among other expectations. This narrative has yet to evolve despite recent theories that suggest grief is a lifelong experience that involves continuing bonds with the deceased (Dennis & Kunkel, 2012) and ongoing processes of meaning making (Neimeyer, Klass, & Dennis, 2014). The dominant narrative is perpetuated largely through prominent rhetoric, such as film and media. Further, the dominant narrative is gendered by appropriating expected ways of grieving to women and men. For example, emotional expressions of grief (e.g., …

Death In The Anthropocene: Coping With Loss In The Age Of Extinction And Civilizational Collapse, Jensen A. Lillquist Feb 2019

Death In The Anthropocene: Coping With Loss In The Age Of Extinction And Civilizational Collapse, Jensen A. Lillquist

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

The Anthropocene presents significant environmental problems for both humans and nonhumans alike, as both climate change and mass extinction are ongoing phenomena. While mass extinction represents the direct death and loss of multitudes of species, climate change represents the threat of death and loss to human populations. Thus, mass extinction and climate change may be termed the losses of the Anthropocene; much environmental writing voices an unprocessed grief directed towards each of these losses. Yet in order for grief to become mourning—an active response to loss—the loss must be recognized and dealt with. The example set by death practices may …

Critical Information Literacy: From General Education To The Major How Assessment Shapes Competencies And Student Learning, Kathy E. Clarke, Gretchen A. Hazard, Brian C. Leventhal Feb 2019

Critical Information Literacy: From General Education To The Major How Assessment Shapes Competencies And Student Learning, Kathy E. Clarke, Gretchen A. Hazard, Brian C. Leventhal

Libraries

Information literacy became formally shaped by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) in the late 1990s with the creation of the Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education. James Madison University adopted the Standards as learning outcomes into its general education program at that time. We continue to evolve our program to forge foundational skills for all entering students, and are in the process of moving towards the new ACRL Framework.

JMU is committed to an outcomes and assessment model of general education. For the information literacy learning domain, we’ve created a course-embedded, tutorial-test model. Thanks to the partnership …

Rhetoric At The University Of Chicago, James Beasley Feb 2019

Rhetoric At The University Of Chicago, James Beasley

Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity

From the early 1940's through the 1960's, some of the most important articles in rhetoric and composition were written by University of Chicago faculty, and it was these articles that became the touchstones of rhetorical education in the institutional return to rhetoric in the latter half of the twentieth century. By organizing these articles according to their institutional context, my book, Rhetoric at the University of Chicago, sheds new light on the beginnings of rhetoric and composition and demonstrates the significance of historical context in avoiding the misuse of these articles as foundationalist rhetorical theory.

Predatory & Deceptive Publishing Pitfalls And Practical Tips: Helping Faculty & Students To Identify & Avoid Questionable Publishing Practices, Sarah A. Norris Jan 2019

Predatory & Deceptive Publishing Pitfalls And Practical Tips: Helping Faculty & Students To Identify & Avoid Questionable Publishing Practices, Sarah A. Norris

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In today’s academic publishing environment, open access journals have become an increasingly common venue for faculty and students, to publish scholarly research. However, this publishing model often prompts many issues and concerns -- one of which is predatory (or, deceptive) publishing practices. These publishers rely on a variety of strategies and deceptive tactics to give the illusion that they are credible and high quality. With this in mind, it is often difficult for faculty and students to distinguish between a credible open access journal and a predatory one. This presentation will provide practical tips on how to facilitate information about …

Gene Co-Expression Networks Analysis Reveal Novel Molecular Endotypes In Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, Jen-Hwa Chu, Wenlan Zang

Yale Day of Data

Rationale:Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a genetic condition that predisposes to early onset pulmonary emphysema and airways obstruction. The exact mechanism through which AATD leads to lung disease is incompletely understood.

Objectives: To investigate the effect of AAT genotype and augmentation therapy on bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) transcriptome, while examining the link between gene expression profiles, and clinical features of AATD.

Methods: We performed RNA-Seq on RNA extracted from BAL and PBMC on samples obtained from 89 AATD patients enrolled in the Genomic Research in Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency and Sarcoidosis (GRADS) study. Differential …

Sign language is the communication media among them. It is" a language which uses gestures instead of sound to convey meaning - combining hand shapes, orientation and movement of the hands, arms or body, facial expressions and lip-patterns. Signs are always part of daily communication among people, but for deaf it is the primary means. Communication among deaf community is easy through the sign language; however, the difficulty is when communicating with normal or vocal people.

Synthesizing Polyhydroxylated Indolizidines From D-Glucopyranoside, Stephanie Bryson Jan 2019

Synthesizing Polyhydroxylated Indolizidines From D-Glucopyranoside, Stephanie Bryson

SURE (Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience)

The individual sugars that constitute more complex carbo-hydrates are joined together by glycosidic bonds. Glycosidase enzymes catalyze the hydrolysis of these glycosidic bonds. The action of glycosidases plays an important role in viral infections, cancer, and diabetes. Iminosugars are nitrogen containing sugar analogs that are known to inhibit glycosidase function. The main objective of this research is to synthesize four of the possible 32 stereoisomers of a tetrahydoxylated indolizidine iminosugar (Figure 1) starting from a commercially available D-glucopyranoside. After synthesizing pyrrolidine 6 (39.3%), a ring-closing metathesis was performed to generate the indolizidine 7. A ruthenium catalyzed dihydroxylation followed by acetylation …

Analyzing Somali Piracy Prosecutions, Molly Parent Jan 2019

Analyzing Somali Piracy Prosecutions, Molly Parent

SURE (Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience)

•From 2001-2010 the number of piracy incidents spiked. Somali piracy differs from other forms of piracy because it has a distinct modus operandi. Whereas most piracy is theft, Somali attacks focus primarily on capturing vessels and holding them for ransom. •The vessel attacks occur primarily in the high seas, outside the territorial jurisdiction of any one nation. Therefore, Somali piracy cases have been heard in various courts around the world. Many cases have been prosecuted in Kenya, Seychelles, the Netherlands, as well as many other countries around the world. •This analysis examines the nature of these prosecutions, and whether there …

Monitoring Biodiversity Using Aquatic Environmental Dna And Nanopore Sequencing, Jordan Callahan Jan 2019

Monitoring Biodiversity Using Aquatic Environmental Dna And Nanopore Sequencing, Jordan Callahan

SURE (Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience)

This project aimed to detect wetland organismal diversity on the Stonehill College campus by sequencing free aquatic eDNA collected from water samples in the seasonal wetland behind O’Hara Hall and Shields Science Center. The Oxford Nanopore MinION DNA sequencer offered real-time data collection at a relatively low cost and demonstrated an “in-the-field” workflow. DNA was extracted from water samples collected using a pump-filter collection apparatus. Protocols for Nanopore sequencing were established and surveys plan to be conducted in order to measure standing plant diversity around the sampling locations. Plant reads from each sample yielded plants primarily from the Brassica, Callitriche, …

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2019

Small-scale agriculture is the primary source of food for the majority of the developing world. It is a vital component of the total global land usage for agricultural production, and sustaining and improving subsistence farms is critical for meeting global food demand as well as maintaining the integrity of agro-ecological systems. Due to the important role that smallholder farmers play in global agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN developed the Smallholder Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agricultural Systems App (SAFA), a 100-question survey tool created for simplicity and wide-reaching applicability. SAFA is flexible in nature in that …

The Labor Of Affordability: Are We Replacing One Inequitable System With Another?, Justin White Jan 2019

The Labor Of Affordability: Are We Replacing One Inequitable System With Another?, Justin White

University Library Publications and Presentations

Textbook affordability has become a goal for a broad range of advocates of affordable higher education. It is seen as an achievable way to make a potentially huge impact. However, the labor required to implement textbook affordability is a major factor that often goes uncommented upon in discussions of barriers to this implementation, which often focus on a lack of funding or training. We should be aware that the same structures that determine how labor is rewarded or even acknowledged are still in place, and how our academic relations of production affect perception of both OER and the labor involved …

Digitizing Sermons In The Marshall University Libraries, Robert Ellison Jan 2019

Digitizing Sermons In The Marshall University Libraries, Robert Ellison

Conference on Sermon Studies

The libraries at Marshall University have a modest collection of sermons that are in the public domain. Some are individual sermons published in pamphlet form; others are volumes of sermons by a single preacher; and still others are collection of sermons by multiple preachers. By far the largest is that of Melville Homer Cummings (1980-1978), who pastored Methodist churches in West Virginia for over 50 years. It contains some 150 sermons, 100 newspaper columns, 300 hymns, and 150 poems, along with 45 newspaper articles about Cummings and his family. There are also about 300 hymnals that were part of Cummings’ …
