Behind The Scenes Of A Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon, Rebecca Giver Johnston

Syracuse University Libraries hosted a student workshop that explored Wikipedia, its history, and its modern challenges. After a conversation and Q&A with a Wikipedia expert, librarians worked with students to make their own updates to Wikipedia, focusing especially on making improvements to pages for folks from the Latinx and LGBTQ+ communities. This lightning talk will explore how staff prepared for this event, how it went, and some takeaways from running it.

This presentation focuses on employee engagement and the multigenerational workforce in academic libraries. In this session, the professional values and strengths of Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z will be discussed by examining how these generations can collaborate and support each other given their different skill sets, attitudes, and lived experiences. Through the application of Kahn’s Theory of Employee Engagement and the Appreciative Inquiry approach, the focus will be on the dynamic interplay of the generations’ engagement and interaction in the workforce. The goal being to foster productive harmony that leverages the unique contributions of each generation.

Many students can memorize formulas but struggle to feel what a newton, joule, or volt means; they treat formulas as plug-and-chug templates rather than descriptions of relationships among physical quantities. This presentation introduces three types of learning activities: (1) text-free (“no-text”) problems, in which carefully designed visuals replace prose to convey relationships and constraints; (2) anti-problems, which begin with a mathematical expression and ask students to imagine a physical situation it could describe; and (3) lab games that turn routine measurement into purposeful play, emphasizing estimation, scaling, and unit sense. Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3) is a critical transcription factor that regulates cell growth, survival and immune responses. It is implicated in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC), the most prevalent form of lung cancer categorized by aggressive tumour progression and high metastatic potential. NSCLC’s aggressiveness stems from the overactivation of STAT3, promoting cancer cell proliferation, survival, and invasion through mechanisms including genetic mutations, cytokine signalling and inflammatory pathways within the tumour microenvironment. This heightened STAT3 activity not only supports tumour growth but also suppresses anti-tumour immune responses and fosters an immunosuppressive environment. This study compares key aspects of the German and American healthcare systems, focusing on an unbiased comparison of the two. Germany’s healthcare system, grounded in its Basic Law of “Grundgesetz”, ensures universal access to medical care using their main system of statutory health insurance (SHI) and private insurance. The coming-of-age genre in film was established during the 1950s, a postwar period defined by rebellious and confused teenagers. Within the film genre, the young protagonist experiences physical or emotional struggle throughout their expedition, resulting in organic identity discovery. One subdivision of the genre that emerged during the 1990s was black coming-of-age stories. However, it was not until Barry Jenkins’ 2016 film Moonlight that the genre was completely reimagined in a new light. Jenkins’ film does not follow the recurrent coming-of-age plotline that has been exemplified in previous films of the genre, which display youthful growth by the end. …

“It takes a village to raise a child”. Social support is vital to parents in carrying out child-rearing duties, which is an additional source of stress for parents. Parents who exhibit higher levels of internalizing symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, stress) are more likely to engage in negative parenting behaviors. These behaviors can, in turn, negatively impact child development. Therefore, it is essential to investigate whether greater social support can buffer or attenuate the relationship between parental internalizing symptoms and negative parenting practices. The HIF-1 pathway helps sustain cancerous tumors by preventing tumor cells from becoming necrotic. The histone acetyltransferase p300 protein is a vital coactivator used in the HIF-1 (hypoxia inducible factor) pathway by binding to subunit HIF-1a. Within our lab we aim to use novel AApeptides as a means of competitively inhibiting the p300 coactivator from binding to the HIF-1a subunit. In order to do this we are specifically studying the protein protein interactions of the CH1 (cysteine/histidine rich-1) domain of the p300 protein as it binds to the C-terminal transactivation domain of the HIF-1a subunit. The roseate spoonbill has long acted as both a flagship species for conservation and ecotourism and an indicator species of wetland health. This study examines the methods used by the U.S government to orchestrate the overthrow of the democratically elected Guatemalan president Jacobo Árbenz in 1954, by focusing on declassified CIA and State Department documents. Through operation PBSUCCESS, the U.S employed a combination of psychological warfare, economic pressure, diplomatic isolation, and paramilitary operations to destabilize the Árbenz administration. CIA documents reveal the role of propaganda campaigns, assassination proposals, and the arming of opposition forces to create internal chaos.
