LaGuardia Community College, City University of New York (CUNY) began receiving funds from a New York State Open Educational Resources (OER) grant in 2017. Since 2020 we have offered a spring OER Seminar through the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The seminar invites instructors and staff to explore their past, current, or desired use of OER at LaGuardia. Seminar co-leaders present and discuss a variety of experiences with OER, from authoring a textbook to implementing OER in high enrollment courses. BACKGROUND:

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a dangerous and life-threatening medical condition which significantly increases risk of cardiovascular fatality. Although each PE treatment strategy has shown to be effective to some degree, there is limited data on they compare. The objective of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of PE treatment with anticoagulation versus interventional treatments.

METHODS:

A Retrospective chart review was performed of all patients identified as having a PE at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022. Using Redcap, patient information was recorded, including age, sex, race, body mass index, and pertinent history. …

The Doppler Wind and Temperature Sounder instrument (DWTS) is a unique atmospheric instrument being developed by Global Atmospheric Technologies (GATS), NASA and NOAA. Invented by Larry Gordley/GATS, it is a mid-wave infrared camera paired with a nitrous oxide (NO) cell, which acts as a spectral filter. Wind velocities and kinetic temperatures in the stratosphere and lower thermosphere are extracted by measuring the induced Doppler shift and Doppler broadening of emissions as they pass through the DWTS field of view. Eventually, the use of 3 gas cells(N2O, CO2) would complete the complement such that 20-200km during the day or night could …

In times of human-induced and accelerating climate change and the sixth mass extinction, it remains unknown where species will persist and thrive in the future. This study explores a holistic assemblage-based conservation management assessment using all squirrel species currently occurring in Alaska (six) and the adjacent 600 km buffer region (an additional six) as an exemplary set of study species. We conducted this assessment by predicting the current and future distributions (based on three different Global Climate Models) of all 12 squirrel species, both individually and as an assemblage, and analyzing how their distributions change over time. Conventional mathematical models face limitations due to oversimplified assumptions, while machine learning algorithms struggle to extrapolate novel trends. Sexual grooming is the deliberate manipulation of a minor by an adult to reduce their sensitivity to sexual contact, with the specific aim of perpetrating child or adolescent sexual abuse (Winters, 2022). Prevalence rates for sexual grooming vary; however, a recent study by Winters and Jeglic (2022) found that approximately 24% of their sample of undergraduate student sample reported experiencing sexual grooming as a minor. These predatory behaviors were prominently featured between lead adolescent and adult characters throughout the popular television show, Pretty Little Liars. The affordability of ambient air monitors has allowed the public to make informed decisions about their local air quality. The accuracy of these monitors, along with the accessibility of them to the general public is therefore important. While most low-cost monitors are not as accurate as EPA’s standards, they still perform comparably and with an accuracy that is acceptable for their purpose. The accessibility of these monitors is more varied as different ones have used different methods to improve their accessibility. This project explores the potential of Ketogenic Metabolic Therapy (KMT) as adjunctive therapy for refractory mental illness. Evidence suggests that ketogenesis can reverse mitochondrial dysfunction, a pathophysiological feature commonly associated with major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), and schizophrenia disorder (SD), leading to measurable improvements in psychiatric symptoms, metabolic biomarkers, and body composition. While preliminary results are promising, current data are based on small sample sizes and short study durations, limiting the generalizability of findings. Therefore, KMT cannot yet be considered a broadly validated adjunctive treatment for severe mental illness. Continued research, particularly longitudinal studies, is essential to determine …

I illustrated, produced, and installed a “Mini Art Vending Machine” on campus to provide the Ursinus College community easy access to original works of art. I explored visual topics that would connect not only current students, but also prospective students, alumni, and members of the Collegeville community.

Evaluation Of The Energy And Timing Resolution Of Cerium Bromide Detectors For Nuclear Applications, Madyson C. Hickman

We tested the timing and energy resolution of cerium bromide (CeBr₃) detectors for use in the CeBrA array of gamma-ray detectors in the John D. Fox lab at Florida State University. Using different sources, we calibrated energy spectra and analyzed FWHM values to determine the energy resolution. Timing resolution from a ⁶⁰Co source was measured using coincident gamma rays from the sources. Our results showed the expected energy dependence and confirmed that the detectors meet performance standards.

Isolated quantum systems are almost always observed to achieve thermal equilibrium in experiments. Understanding cases where they do not thermalize, and therefore retain memory about the initial state, could lead to the development of a quantum memory. We excite atoms in a magneto-optical trap, where they are cold enough to treat as stationary. In our experiment, our atoms exchange energy via dipole-dipole interactions and fail to thermalize. We present a theoretical and computational analysis that suggests that our system starts in an exceptional initial state.
