Bout Vs. Non-Bout Physical Activity Minutes As Predictors Of Waist Circumference In College Students, Valerie Olijar, Matt Scott, Brooke Ferraro, Elizabeth Edwards, Trent Hargens

Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities

Physical activity recommendations to reduce all cause mortality consist of 10 minute bouts of a moderate-vigorous intensity, for a total of 150 min/week. This study investigates if those 10 minute bouts really matter. We found that step count was the best predictor of waist circumference. This finding supports many new technological devices that use step counts as a form of measuring activity. It provides support that the more steps you take, the likelier you will have a small waist.

The Effect Of Parent-Infant Swim Classes On Maternal Parenting Competence, Emotional Availability, And Aquatic Handling, Hope Sadowski, Chanele Molano

Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities

Low parenting competence and limited emotional availability decrease the quality of the parent-infant relationship (Young, 2011; Sturge-Apple et al., 2012). However, co-occupations, or reciprocal relationships where the occupations of two or more individuals are interactively shaping each other, have been associated with strengthening parent-infant relationships (Pierce, 2009; Price & Stephenson, 2009). Parent-infant swim classes are co-occupation based interventions that facilitate close bodily contact and teach parents handling skills that can generalize into the home. Numerous websites allude to the benefits of these classes; however, there are currently no evidence-based claims supported by the occupational therapy literature. The researchers hypothesized that …

Three Facets Of Employee Wellness: The Potential Moderating Influences Of Physical Activities, Mindfulness, And Vacation, Brittany N. Meier, Shahnaz Aziz Phd

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Current research notes a disconnect between well-being programs offered by organizations and those most valued by employees (Agarwal, Bersin, Lahiri, Schwartz, & Violini, 2018). Thus, the current study attempts to better understand the potential influence of health-driven, leisure activities on three worker characteristics, namely, workaholism, work stress, and work engagement. With a greater understanding, we hope to emphasize the importance of comprehensive well-being programs for both employers and employees who may experience any of the aforementioned characteristics. To best assess potential components of a well-being program, three leisure activities of interest (i.e., physical activities, mindfulness, and vacation) were selected. These …

Development Of Edta Crosslinked Beta-Cyclodextrin For Use In Drug-Eluting Cardiovascular Stents, Grace Burkhart, Kathleen Young, Nathan Mu, Horst A. Von Recum

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Drug-eluting stents (DES) reduce the occurrence of in-stent restenosis in patients who have a stent placed in cardiac arteries. However, current DES do not have a long enough window of drug release to prevent late in-stent restenosis. Beta-cyclodextrin (BCD), a polymer which is capable of drug elution, has a high biocompatibility, and is able to be refilled with drug, is polymerized using Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The EDTA-BCD polymer particles have shown good attachment on Cobalt Chromium cardiovascular stents through imaging with SEM and analysis with EDS. Drug release studies done on the particles have shown extended drug release, showing that …

The Importance Of Statistical Design In Spatial Analysis: Indiana Superfund Site Locations And Socioeconomic Variables, Jenna Johnston, Cecilia Hall

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Environmental justice research has focused on the question of whether marginalized people are more likely to live close to polluted sites. These spatial disparities have been found when analyzing the distribution of Superfund sites with race and socioeconomic status. However, these results appear to be dependent on what methods and units of analysis are used. This study examines whether these disparities exist in Indiana by comparing the results of two different statistical tests: a t-test and bootstrapping analysis.

Using t-tests to compare median income in areas close to and far from Superfund sites at distances of 1 and 5 miles …

Graphene-Supported Ni4 Catalysts For Propane Dehydrogenation, Jacob Allred, Josh Duensing, Stan Zygmunt Dr.

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is used to produce propene, which is the primary building block for many commercial plastics. The catalyst used most commonly for this reaction is platinum. Due to a rising demand for propene, an alternative to platinum is being sought because of its high cost. For this purpose, we are performing a computational study of a 4-atom nickel cluster (Ni4) on a graphene support. We have calculated the propane binding energy, overall reaction energy, and activation energy for the first step of the PDH reaction. We have introduced varying numbers of nitrogen atoms into the graphene sheet to …

Stable Nanopalladium Hydride In Water For Sustainable And Selective Reductions, Jesse Klus, Sachin Handa

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The synthesis of air-stable ligand-free nanopalladium hydride (PdNHx) in water was achieved and applied to various organic transformations, including (1) reduction of heteroaromatics such as (iso)quinolines, phenanthrolines, benzotriazole, and naphthyridines, (2) regio- and chemoselective reduction of nitroarenes, (3) alkyne reductions, (4) chemoselective dehalogenation, and (5) base-free detriflation. Both the synthesis of PdNHx and the reductions were carried out under mild conditions in a micellar medium using our designer surfactant PS-750-M, which eliminates the need for toxic organic solvents and extremely high hydrogen pressure and temperature. Notably, PS-750-M is also a replacement of hazardous polar-aprotic solvents. This newer approach for selective …

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Exercise is generally thought to be beneficial for physical and mental health; however, when done in excess, exercise can lead to damaging physical, psychological, and social health consequences. This type of exercise is known as exercise dependency and is frequently associated with eating disorder pathology. Perfectionism (high or personal standards and maladaptive evaluative concerns) is a risk factor for eating disorders and is also associated with exercise dependency. However, no studies have examined longitudinal relationships between perfectionism and exercise dependency. The current study used a sample of adolescent females (N = 444) from a Southeastern United States high school, …

Galaxy And Mass Assembly: A Comparison Between Galaxy-Galaxy Lens Searches In Kids/Gama, Shawn Knabel, Benne Holwerda Oct 2019

Galaxy And Mass Assembly: A Comparison Between Galaxy-Galaxy Lens Searches In Kids/Gama, Shawn Knabel, Benne Holwerda

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Strong gravitational lenses are cases where a distant background galaxy is located directly behind a massive foreground galaxy, whose gravity causes the light from the background galaxy to bend around the foreground galaxy. In addition to being visually stunning, these rare events are useful laboratories for furthering our understanding of gravity and cosmology and to determine properties, such as the mass and dark matter content, of the lensing galaxies themselves. The trouble is finding enough of these strong gravitational lenses for further study. The immensity of the catalogs being collected by state-of-the-art telescopes requires equally innovative methods for interpreting that …
