How News Media Coverage Of Crises Promotes Conspiracy Beliefs, Richard Kornrumpf, Adam Enders Phd Oct 2019

How News Media Coverage Of Crises Promotes Conspiracy Beliefs, Richard Kornrumpf, Adam Enders Phd

Posters-at-the-Capitol

While scholars of conspiracy theories have recently made great strides in understanding the basic nature and correlates of conspiratorial thinking, we still know little about how conspiracy beliefs are disseminated and communicated, especially when it comes to traditional media. In this instance, we use a unique experiment to investigate whether media coverage of mass shootings – complete with the uncertainty, conflicting reports, and dubious official narratives that characterize such coverage – provides the raw material for conspiracy theories and promotes conspiracy beliefs among viewers. We find that implicit conspiratorial information – that which causes confusion and foments uncertainty – does …

The Combination Of Valsartan And Sacubitril Does Not Improve Effectiveness Against Angii-Induced Aaas, Jenny (Ching Ling) Liang, Sean Thatcher Oct 2019

The Combination Of Valsartan And Sacubitril Does Not Improve Effectiveness Against Angii-Induced Aaas, Jenny (Ching Ling) Liang, Sean Thatcher

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is defined as permanent dilation of the abdominal aorta by more than 50% of its normal diameter. As AAAs grow progressively, the aorta can rupture and cause life-threatening bleeding. Preliminary data demonstrates that angiotensin II (AngII), which can induce AAA, plus testosterone were powerful stimulants for expression of neprilysin in abdominal aortic smooth muscle cells from male mice. Neprilysin is a metalloendopeptidase, which can cleave and inactivate AngII and natriuretic peptides. Because natriuretic peptides might be beneficial for reducing the growth of AAAs through decreasing blood pressure, inhibition of neprilysin along with blocking AngII receptor would …

The Effects Of Erosion Structures On Triplett Creek From The Fall Of 2016, 2017, And 2018, Haylee Winters Oct 2019

The Effects Of Erosion Structures On Triplett Creek From The Fall Of 2016, 2017, And 2018, Haylee Winters

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Triplett Creek is a tributary of the Licking River. It runs through Morehead, KY, where we are conducting our research.

The creek was modified in the 1970s but construction was halted before the project was complete. Unfortunately, the result was an increase in overflow and subsequent riverbank erosion. The city installed sediment trap rocks in hopes of slowing down the water and decreasing erosion. We are using drones and photogrammetric software to map the area and compare images of the river to determine erosion rates. The new images will be compared to ones taken in previous years to visualize the …

Ils Migration For A Small Library: Our Experience, Doyin Adenuga, Michael Green Oct 2019

Ils Migration For A Small Library: Our Experience, Doyin Adenuga, Michael Green

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

Over the last decade, many academic libraries have added a discovery layer to their integrated library systems (ILS) in an effort to improve access to information and streamline the users’ search experience. The Willard J. Houghton Library, a small academic library at Houghton College, recently migrated to WMS Discovery and implemented such a discovery layer into its OPAC, along with many other related changes to both the library’s backend and “onstage” functions. Naturally, any ILS migration will cause a variety of changes (and headaches!) for a library, its staff, and its users, but in this case these changes were complicated …

Speak Up Through Video: Campus Collaboration For Effective Flipped Learning, Susan Franzen, Julie Derden Oct 2019

Speak Up Through Video: Campus Collaboration For Effective Flipped Learning, Susan Franzen, Julie Derden

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Let’s face it, sometimes librarians repeat the same content over and over. Or we have to present information that students find uninteresting and difficult to understand. To make repetitive, challenging library information engaging and entertaining, two librarians collaborated with their campus television production team to create videos to flip library instruction for education and nursing majors. After sharing basic information with a team of creative production interns and their faculty advisor, both librarians were thrilled with the inventive, instructive videos produced. One video featured a game show of data and statistics for a public health nursing course. The second used …

Opioids And Older Adults-Is There A Problem?, Jennifer E. Hogan Oct 2019

Opioids And Older Adults-Is There A Problem?, Jennifer E. Hogan

Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)

The Opioid epidemic affects people of all ages; racial, ethnic, sexual and gender minorities; income classes; and geographic areas. Older adults are among the groups affected by this problem because they often use prescription opioids to cope with painful chronic conditions or surgery. Older adults may develop an opioid use disorder, may be a target for crime since they have opioids in the home or maybe raising their grandchildren due to their adult child's addiction. Three different impacts with different needs in terms of resources and referrals.

AAA’s are no longer just about a noon meal for someone over the age of 60. Many local AAA’s now provide evidenced based wellness programs, hospital and nursing home transitions programs, caregiver assistance programs, dementia programs, and innovative assistive technology programs that launch rocket science technology from the …

"Shacking Up" And Settling Down: Cohabitation In Middle And Late Adulthood, Nadia Flanigan, Jennifer Zorotovich Oct 2019

"Shacking Up" And Settling Down: Cohabitation In Middle And Late Adulthood, Nadia Flanigan, Jennifer Zorotovich

Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)

Rates of cohabitation have increased sharply among adults of all ages over the past few decades, particularly among adults ages 50 and older. Researchers have observed key differences between younger cohabiters and older cohabiters. Whereas younger cohabiters are more likely to be cohabiting as a path towards marriage, older cohabiters are more likely to be cohabiting after a previous marriage that may have ended in divorce. With increasing divorce rates among adults 50 and older, rates of cohabitation among this age group may continue to rise. Also compared to younger cohabiters, older cohabiters are more likely to view their relationship …

Standardized Patient Assessment Of Communications In Pharmacy And Medical Students, James Nawarskas, Mikiko Takeda, Patricia Marshik, Alexandra Herman, Mary Vilay, Krista Salazar, Audrey Bobick, Edward Fancovic

InterProfessional Education Research and Scholarship

Use of activities (i.e. objective structured clinical examinations, or OSCEs) involving standardized patients (SPs) is a commonly used method of assessing communication skills in health sciences education is through the. The use of SPs was associated with higher scores on communications assessments and significant improvements on many subsections of a communications assessment tool in pharmacy students. However, these studies used faculty (not the SPs) to assess the students. While the use of SPs as direct evaluators of communication skills is recognized in medical education it is poorly defined in pharmacy education. In addition, interprofessional education (IPE) environments (including the one …

The Crab Nebula is the remnant of a powerful stellar explosion first observed in 1054 AD and has been extremely well studied for decades. previous very high energy (VHE); GeV) studies have observed no variability in the nebula flux making the Crab a standard reference tool for gamma-ray telescopes. As part of the VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) collaboration, we continue monitoring the nebula’s flux to understand the VERITAS telescopes and physical processes occurring within the nebula. We are analyzing over 80 hours of data from 2017 and 2018 from VERITAS Collaboration, developing and adding to a …

Wwoofing In Northern Europe: A Cross-Cultural Examination Of Food, Farming, And Community, Seth Brawner Oct 2019

Wwoofing In Northern Europe: A Cross-Cultural Examination Of Food, Farming, And Community, Seth Brawner

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Industrial agriculture has changed the way Americans eat food. More food is available but many eat without knowing where the food came from, or the additives that were used to grow and preserve it. The implementation of this large-scale food system has caused many health issues among the American population. Large-scale agriculture systems, being primarily monocultures, are also the cause of many environmental problems affecting the United States such as deforestation, soil erosion, and the eutrophication of waterways. Small-scale, organic agriculture has the potential to combat these environmental issues while restoring local, more transparent food systems. This summer I spent …

Synthesis Of Ether Alcohols With Varying Catalysts, Hannah Grady, Frida Li, Jeffrey A. Hansen Oct 2019

Synthesis Of Ether Alcohols With Varying Catalysts, Hannah Grady, Frida Li, Jeffrey A. Hansen

Annual Student Research Poster Session

It has previously been found that acids and bases are effective catalysts in the opening of epoxides into ether alcohols. Our first goal for this summer was to determine which of the acids and bases available were the most effective. After figuring out which of the acids and bases are the optimal catalysts, our second goal was producing ether alcohols in the shortest amount of time with higher yields. Our final goal was to see how biologically reactive the ether alcohols we produced were.
