Computational Modeling For Decision-Making Under Climate Change Uncertainty: Reservoir Simulation Game, Julianne Quinn
Computational Modeling For Decision-Making Under Climate Change Uncertainty: Reservoir Simulation Game, Julianne Quinn
All ECSTATIC Materials
Almost every decision you make is under uncertainty. Will I need a rain jacket in the afternoon? Will they say yes if I ask them out? Is 1 hour enough time to finish this assignment? Oftentimes, we can use computational modeling to simulate different scenarios of what might happen in the future to inform what decisions are best on average, or what decisions minimize the worst case outcome. For example, you could decide what player to draft for your Fantasy Football team by simulating player performance. In this activity, we will simulate how much water to release from a dam …
Configural Face Processing: How Face Coverings Impact Social Judgements In The Covid-19 Era, Linsey D. Culkins
Configural Face Processing: How Face Coverings Impact Social Judgements In The Covid-19 Era, Linsey D. Culkins
Student Academic Conference
The behavioral immune system has been implicated in both adaptive and maladaptive social judgements and behaviors affecting a social environment (Murray & Schaller 2016). As norms change in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, how will covering the nose and mouth—with face coverings as a preventative measure to limit COVID-19 community spread—impact social environments? The study seeks to investigate whether face coverings influence affect, social comfort, and judgments of trust. Undergraduate college students were shown images of target faces with and without face coverings covering the eyes, the nose and mouth, or both. Results suggest that observing a surgical mask which …
Extending Single Entity Electrochemistry Towards The Detection Of Single Bacteria In Micro Volumes, Ashley Tubbs, Junaid Ahmed, Julio C. Alvarez
Extending Single Entity Electrochemistry Towards The Detection Of Single Bacteria In Micro Volumes, Ashley Tubbs, Junaid Ahmed, Julio C. Alvarez
Graduate Research Posters
Single entity electrochemistry (SEE) is an emerging electroanalytical technique with the ability to push the limit of detection of electrochemical sensors to the single particle level. It measures the change in current over time, making SEE rapid, simple, and cost-effective. The type of current response observed in the scan can provide information about the physiochemical processes underlying the signal. While SEE was originally developed to detect single molecules and nanoparticles, it has been widely applied to micron-sized particles, including emulsion droplets, bacteria, viruses, and mammalian cells. Some recent advances in this technique have focused on the detection of microscopic quantities …

The coronavirus pandemic has emphasized a need for robust and reliable air purification systems in buildings; with that comes a need for a standardized testing methodology for air purification technologies in HVAC air circulation systems. One such method of air purification is photocatalytic oxidation (PCO), a mechanism in which a catalyst irradiated by light produces reactive molecules that degrade a wide range of pollutants, including the aerosols that carry COVID. This technology has primarily been used in aqueous applications, but there have recently been developments in air purification that have made it a promising contender to existing technologies. One of …

Changes In Immigration Policy Regarding Muslim Immigrants Across The Obama And Trump Administrations, Samreen Khan
Changes In Immigration Policy Regarding Muslim Immigrants Across The Obama And Trump Administrations, Samreen Khan
Research Days Posters 2021
Immigration to the United States has always been complicated, with legislation and the appreciation of immigrants often falling along racial, ethnic, and religious lines. This dominant theme has persisted and even emboldened in recent years, particularly for Muslim immigrants after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. This presentation argues that there exist significant changes and continuities in immigration policy regarding Muslim-majority countries, across the Obama and Trump presidencies, and that the cultural rhetoric surrounding Muslims during each directly impacted policy. Based on an analysis of laws, including executive orders, Congressional hearings, and past legislation, juxtaposed with rhetoric regarding Muslim …

Phage Antibiotic Antagonism Of Escherichia Coli B And T4 Phage, Mikaela Griechen, Miranda Griechen, Tyler Mueller
Student Academic Conference
Antibiotic resistance has resulted in researchers finding new methods for treating diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria. Antibiotic resistance forms due to the presence of plasmids and mutations in the bacterial genome. Phage Antibiotic synergy has been reported when exposing bacteria to phages in previous studies. Bacterial immune mechanisms, specifically those that aid against bacteriophages, have been exploited by researchers as a potential treatment for infection and diseases. These mechanism includes Superinfection (Sie), Abortive infection, surface modification, etc. Escherichia coli B is a bacteria that contains an outer membrane with receptors, porins, lipopolysaccharides, and other surface molecules that aid in defense …

The Emotional Impact Of “Humanizing Cadavers” In Undergraduate Nursing Students, Patricia Wisenden, Ryan Schrock, Fathi Abdullahi
Student Academic Conference
The learning of gross anatomy through the use of human cadaver dissection provides an intellectual, emotional and once in a lifetime learning experience. With human cadaver use being such an imperative way to learn human anatomy, many students are beginning to increasingly get this opportunity which equates into a multitude of different emotional responses amongst students of various different gender’s, religions and socio-demographics. However, to add this, the impediment to being able to fully maximize this unaccompanied experience/opportunity is the emotional influx amongst the student. With life experience, youth and allegiance towards their perspective (medical) endeavor possibly being in the …

Adapting Educator Preparation Practices To Prepare Candidates For New Teaching Modalities, Shannon E. Budin, Andrew I. Hashey, Angela L. Patti, Lisa A. Rafferty
School of Education
Given the global pandemic, educators at all levels have had to transition their teaching practices to remote environments. Teacher education faculty have had to consider not only how to shift their own teaching, but also how to prepare teacher candidates for their future teaching roles which may include instruction in a range of modalities (face-to-face, remote-synchronous, remote-asynchronous, hybrid). In this research overview, we propose that high-leverage practices (HLPs) can serve as a solid foundation for teacher preparation regardless of modality and offer five tips for how teacher educators can prepare candidates to use HLPs across modalities.
Heterogeneous Catalysis For Organic Fine Chemical Synthesis, Sourav Biswas
Heterogeneous Catalysis For Organic Fine Chemical Synthesis, Sourav Biswas
School of Natural and Social Sciences
Heterogeneous catalysis has been established as a fundamental pillar supporting the advances in ‘green chemistry’, from the perspective of cost and waste minimization. However, propensity for precious metals, promoters/ additives and harsh reaction conditions hinder the widespread use of heterogeneous catalysts over traditional pathways for chemical synthesis. This talk will introduce some of our current research in the field of heterogeneous catalysis encompass many of the topics of ‘Green and Sustainable Chemistry’. The absence of precious metals and additives, use of air as the sole oxidant, and easy isolation of products, along with proper catalyst reusability, make our catalytic protocol …
Attribute-Aligned Domain-Invariant Feature Learning For Unsupervised Domain Adaptation Person Re-Identification, Guanqiu Qi
School of the Professions
Domain invariance and discrimination of learned features as two crucial factors affect the performance of unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) person re-identification (Re-ID). Person attributes (such as “backpack”, “boots”, “handbag”, etc) remaining unchanged across multiple domains have been used as mid-level visual-semantic information in UDA person Re-ID. As two main challenges, both misalignment of attribute-related regions across multiple images and domain shift between source and target domains affect the learning of domain-invariant features (DIF).
To address the above two challenges, this article proposes to take advantage of the stability of person attributes and the complementarity of person attributes and the corresponding …
World Wide Wake: A Look Into Digital Wake Work In Response To The Murder Of Breonna Taylor, Kalyn T. Coghill
World Wide Wake: A Look Into Digital Wake Work In Response To The Murder Of Breonna Taylor, Kalyn T. Coghill
Graduate Research Posters
In Christina Sharpe's, In the Wake, she refers to "wake work" as conscious work. Wake work makes a conscious and intentional effort to celebrate one's life as they are passing and after they have transitioned on. Wake work includes grief, sadness, reminiscing, happiness, laughter, and many more emotions. We think of wake work happening in the physical, but I want to look at how weight work exists in the digital. This paper will discuss how wake work is done in digital spaces such as social media platforms. I will also be looking at how social movements such as black …

Introduction: Diabetes is a disease that affects a multitude of people across the world, and with a large variety of complications that results from uncontrolled glucose levels. Some of these complications can cause secondary and tertiary comorbidities, including amputations. Some patients with diabetes will have only one amputation in their lifetime, but will have to undergo additional amputations on the same limb. This is done to try and contain the spread of the peripheral neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease that can result from uncontrolled diabetes.
Methods: A literature search was completed through Google Scholar and PubMed in 2019. Seven articles …
Writing A Fantasy Novel, Sarah Webb
Writing A Fantasy Novel, Sarah Webb
Honors Projects
The goal of this Honors Project was to write and outline a manuscript for a fantasy novel. Worked into that goal was to create a unique magic system, a world, and a pantheon, which was accomplished through research of other fantasy worlds and other mythologies both fictional and historical. The story revolves around the central questions of identity (including the fluidity of gender and sexuality), concerns of future aspirations, and how education applies to those topics through facilitating conversation; these themes are not commonly discussed in mainstream fantasy. The current manuscript, which houses over 42,000 words, also includes a visual …

POTS is defined as a clinical syndrome of orthostatic intolerance that has a heart rate (HR) increase of 30 beats per minute (BPM) or more, with a standing HR of >120 bpm in the context of a 10 minute standing orthostatic intolerance test, with the absence of orthostatic hypotension (a decrease in systolic blood pressure (BP) of ~20 or more mmHg with or without a decrease in diastolic BP of ~10 or more …
Comparing Mortality Of Robotic-Assisted Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting With Conventional Surgery In Coronary Artery Disease Patients, Ryan Ule
Capstone Showcase
Introduction: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common heart disease in the United States, oftentimes leading to complications such as myocardial infarction and death. Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the preferred surgical treatment to extend the lives of stable CAD patients. Although conventional CABG (C-CABG) remains the surgical treatment of choice, less invasive techniques exist, such as robotic-assisted CABG (R-CABG). While it has been found that R-CABG has multiple benefits, little is known about the mortality comparisons between the two techniques. This paper hopes to explore: In the surgical treatment of coronary artery disease in adult patients (P), …

Abstract:
Introduction: Aortic valve replacement in middle-aged adults is a procedure done when the aortic valve becomes so incompetent, that replacement is the only viable option for the patient. A bioprosthetic or a mechanical valve is then chosen and replaces the patients’ native aortic valve. For these adults, this procedure is life-extending and the only option for prolonged survival. This paper will address whether a bioprosthetic or mechanical valve would be the better option for prolonging a middle-aged patients’ life.
