Stonewall To The Present: An Analysis Of The Lgbt Rights Movement And U.S. Public Policy, Jake Mericle

Capstone Showcase

The LGBT Rights Movement has been one of the most influential social movements in recent decades. The aim of this paper is to determine the extent to which the LGBT rights movement has affected U.S. law and policy. In order to study this, I employ a process tracing method to study the movement as a whole over the past few decades from Stonewall to the present. I begin with the Stonewall Riots of 1969 as they are largely considered to be the start of the modern LGBT rights movement. My analysis focuses on the power and the importance of the …

How Sociological Factors Influence Political Party Affiliation In The U.S., Christa Mcdowell Jan 2021

How Sociological Factors Influence Political Party Affiliation In The U.S., Christa Mcdowell

Capstone Showcase

There are several factors that contribute to political party affiliation in the United States, but it is not clear precisely to what extent. Two theories in particular, Social Force Theory & Parental Value Transmission Theory, argue that identity politics, a child’s perception of the parent, and shared racial struggles are all factors which contribute directly to political party affiliation. Using pattern matching, I operationalize several concepts or factors such as race, gender, and religion as indicators. Compiling data from the Pew Research Center, Gallup, and case studies, I found that most of these factors are intersectional and that intersectionality is …

Capstone Showcase

Abstract:

Introduction: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder found in women of reproductive age that often causes infertility. The first-line treatment for infertility in anovulatory PCOS patients is ovulation induction. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a third line treatment often used as a last resort. PCOS patients have higher failure risks of first- and second-line medications. Therefore, this review analyzes if adverse pregnancy outcomes (O) are reduced more with IVF (I) versus using letrozole for ovulation induction (C) in women aged 20-30 struggling with infertility due to anovulatory PCOS (P).

Improvement In 14-3-3 Binding Site Prediction, Katherine K. Mccormack Jan 2021

Improvement In 14-3-3 Binding Site Prediction, Katherine K. Mccormack

ScholarsArchive Data

The 14-3-3 family of phospho-binding proteins regulate a variety of major cellular processes through interaction with a network of dynamic proteins. Deregulation of the 14-3-3 interaction network contributes to a variety of degenerative disorders and cancers. Our lab focuses on identifying novel 14-3-3 interactions and understanding how 14-3-3 binding regulates protein function. A major gap in this process is that identifying the phospho-site where 14-3-3 docks on a given protein is time- and resource-consuming. Prediction algorithms have been developed to predict canonical 14-3-3 binding sites, however, there are many non-canonical sites that existing software is unable to predict. To fill …

Seti, Cultural Evolution, And The Star Trek Imaginary, John Traphagan Dec 2020

Seti, Cultural Evolution, And The Star Trek Imaginary, John Traphagan

Society for Social and Conceptual Issues in Astrobiology (SSoCIA) Conference

This paper explores the scientific search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) as a practice of imagination expressed via an evolutionary eschatology where intelligent species are saved through the process of technological and social progress. I discuss a social imaginary associated with Star Trek which has significantly shaped the manner in which SETI scientists have thought about and justified their research. I show how a collection of sociotechnical entities such as scientists, fictional representations, and ideological tropes intertwine in the SETI context to form a coherent body of practice that is employed to justify and legitimize scientific practices related to SETI.
