An Exploratory Case Study Of The Process Of Pilots Adoption And The Impact Of The Interdependent Relationship Among Government, Community, And Nonprofits On Pilots: The Case Of Boston., Bit An
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The purpose of this research is to explore Boston’s payment in lieu of taxes (PILOTs) program. PILOTs are unique revenue structures in that they require voluntary payments from nonprofits. As such, they have been difficult for cities to adopt, yet Boston’s program stands out for its program success. There are few theoretical studies that examine the PILOTs adoption process in detail. This case study contributes to building a theoretical framework for the collaborative PILOT processes by exploring the dynamics of the Boston’ PILOT program. The Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF) serves as the primary conceptual lens. This framework helps conceptualize how …
Examination Of Job Satisfaction Of Aged Care Employees: A Systematic Review, Kennady Gustin
Examination Of Job Satisfaction Of Aged Care Employees: A Systematic Review, Kennady Gustin
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The population of Americans aged 65 and older is increasing every day, as is the need for caregivers to accommodate this population growth. However, for many years long-term care facilities across the United States have been plagued with high turnover rates. Turnover is as costly for nursing home residents as it is for these facilities. Turnover has been linked to reduced quality of care and quality of life for residents. For the last three decades, there has been a growing need to understand the factors that bring about caregiver burnout and ultimately, turnover. More importantly, however, are the factors that …

Impact of acute exercise on microRNAs related to concussion symptoms
Concussions, or traumatic brain injury (TBI), are a serious medical problem affecting approximately 1.7 million people in the United States each year. Current tools for analysis of concussion include the Glasgow Coma Scale, SCAT5, computerized topography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), however, these tools are typically not indicative of the range and severity of symptoms a patient may experience. Recent studies have explored the use of microRNAs as a biomarker for TBI severity in patients who have already experienced a TBI. We seek to investigate the microRNA levels in …

Perceptions Of Religious Accommodations In The Workplace, Kelsey Ciagala
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Although all forms of religious discrimination are understudied (Ghumman et al., 2013), we examined how Christian Americans, the dominant religious group in the U.S., perceive the fairness of religious workplace accommodations. We examined and two potential correlates of their perceptions: religious fundamentalism and prejudice towards outgroup religions. In one session, participants completed measures of religious fundamentalism and prejudice. Approximately three days later, they read three target and five filler descriptions of an employee requesting a workplace accommodation. Participants indicated how fair the request was to the employee, how fair the request was to the employee’s coworkers, how reasonable the request …
Influences On The Implementation Of Guided Play Practices In Kindergarten: A Grounded Theory Study, Amy Schmidtke
Influences On The Implementation Of Guided Play Practices In Kindergarten: A Grounded Theory Study, Amy Schmidtke
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The professional capacity of a kindergarten teacher is central to the implementation of developmentally appropriate practices that support children’s learning and development. Evidence indicates that a teacher’s professional capacity is influenced through experiences with leadership, professional learning, and collaboration. Although research clearly supports the positive impact of play experiences for young children, the current educational climate does not provide teachers with the confidence or the structural supports needed to actualize play in kindergarten classrooms. The findings demonstrate what influences kindergarten teachers to implement guided play practices in their classrooms. The implications provide insight as to which elements of leadership, professional …
Risk Factor Assessment For Acl Injuries In D1 Soccer And Volleyball Athletes, Kaitlyn Guhl, Lindsey Remski
Risk Factor Assessment For Acl Injuries In D1 Soccer And Volleyball Athletes, Kaitlyn Guhl, Lindsey Remski
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Introduction: Research has shown that non-contact ACL injuries are very common for female athletes involved in level I/II sports, specifically soccer and volleyball players. Injury prevention programs have been developed but still remain largely generalized to meet the needs of all athletes. Different sports place unique demands on their athletes which may lead them to develop different risk factors for injury. In order to develop the most effective injury prevention across different sports, we must first understand differences in biomechanics related to ACL injury risk between athletes specializing in different sports. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to determine …
Wound Care Nurses Becoming Quitline Providers And Teaching Patients About Smoking Cessation And Nicotine Replacement Therapy, Hannah Gilbert, Lakyn Rye
Wound Care Nurses Becoming Quitline Providers And Teaching Patients About Smoking Cessation And Nicotine Replacement Therapy, Hannah Gilbert, Lakyn Rye
Scholars Week
Our evidence-based practice project focuses on wound care nurses becoming Quitline providers and teaching patients about smoking cessation and nicotine replacement therapy. To guide our research, we used Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory. Smoking is a modifiable risk factor that is a part of the patient’s environment. Our research we used supports that smoking can affect wound healing. We believe that wound care nurses should be trained in smoking cessation and nicotine replacement therapy prescribing to be an advocate to patients and their journey to wound healing.
Preventing Insulin Storage And Administration Errors, Makena Reddick
Preventing Insulin Storage And Administration Errors, Makena Reddick
Scholars Week
■The research problem was discovered when nurses were observed storing and administering insulin improperly. The objectives of this project were to find the correct policies for these procedures, obtain research that backed these policies, and present this information to nurses to create a safer habit. In researching, it was found that reducing the physical distance between a person completing work and the materials required to do so increased compliance (Gibbs & McLernon, 2017). In a second study, the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality care for patients with diabetes in the community is dependent upon (district) nurses having appropriate knowledge …

Prevention Of Pressure Ulcers, Lauren Venegoni, Jordan Daugherty
Scholars Week
Pressure ulcers are one of the most common challenges all healthcare settings face. Since this is such a prevalent issue in all of nursing, proper interventions need to be put in place to prevent an occurrence. Utilizing risk assessment tools, early mobilization, repositioning, preventive skin care measures, good nutrition, and prophylactic dressings are just a few ways in which nurses can prevent PUs. There is emerging research on the use of silicone dressings in conjunction with other preventive measures that need to be taken in order to improve patient outcomes.

"Library Lane": Digitally Discovering A Lost American Impressionist Painting, Lydia Craig
Graduate Research Symposium
Years ago, a vivid painting of an oxen team pulling a cart and driver down a wooded lane in a rolling countryside was rescued by my partner from the curb and now hangs in his house. Recently, I was inspired to research its origins. First, I deciphered the painting’s date (1917) and its artist’s signature, that of Matilda Browne (1869 – 1947), the only female artist in CT’s Old Lyme Art Colony. My research pursued historical, artistic, and academic avenues through census and public records, enabled by the faintly penciled names on the canvas back of its owners the Sayers …

Scholars Week
All across the world there is an opioid epidemic taking place that can affect any one person. It does not discriminate by age, gender, or ethnicity. Knowing this information, one group is greatly at risk and that is the school aged population. Teenagers are focused on wanting to fit in with peers, and are easily affected by peer pressure. This puts them at an increased risk for experimenting with drugs. This information pushed us to research about policies in place in school systems to help fight the epidemic. In 2017 2.2 million people of ages 12-17 were illicit drug users …

Mask Etiquette For Nurses During A Pandemic: N95 Respirators Vs. Surgical Masks, Haylee Shevlin, Carlin Jones
Scholars Week
Healthcare personnel are blatantly exposed to COVID-19 while at work. Incorrect PPE, inaccurate donning and doffing of PPE, and improper disinfection of masks for reuse is contributing to exposure of not only COVID-19, but other respiratory illnesses too. Throughout this presentation there is information as to when surgical masks and N95 respirators should be used as well as the correct procedure for donning and doffing of both masks. Proper disinfection for the reuse of both masks during a PPE shortage is also included.
Key words: N95 respirator, surgical mask, COVID-19, PPE

Evidence-Based Practice: Delaying Infant Bathing, Gabrielle Wadle, Grace Frankland
Scholars Week
A hospital's policy regarding infant bathing is currently not congruent with best nursing practice. The hospital’s current policy is to bathe an infant once they are stable and their rectal temperature is at or above 98.6 °F. Although the infant may become stable within the first 24-hours of birth, the World Health Organization recommends that, “Bathing should be delayed until 24 hours after birth.” (2013, p. 4). Research has been completed to support delaying infant bathing until 24 hours post-delivery, suggesting potential modifications to current policy.

Purple Pencil Project: A Case Study Of Digital Humanities In Practice, Prakruti Maniar
Graduate Research Symposium
The Digital Humanities knowledge body produced in the last decade rightfully critiques the manner in which technology dictates our social life, questions the power structures of the digital world, raises concerns about the business logics that govern our most-used software.
Digital Humanities in Practice is presented here as an approach to actively addressing some of these problems, by looking at the origin, mission and setup of Purple Pencil Project, an Indian literary venture, that focuses on bringing regional Indian fiction under the same spotlight that Indian English fiction has dominated over last few decades internally, and Anglo-American fiction globally.

Graduate Research Symposium
In our collaborative project with Dr. Dana Garbarski, [sociology department], and Dr. Doherty [political-science department], we created a cross-sectional online survey of a descriptively representative sample of 2,250 adults in Cook County. The survey, which uses zip codes to geocode findings, focuses on seven topics relevant to county residents: gentrification, environmental conditions, politics, political efficacy, policing, and COVID-19. In terms of demographics, it includes questions regarding gender, race, education, homeownership, among others. Juanita and Keyla developed the survey’s environmental conditions and policing topics, respectively, with faculty experts’ guidance. Besides Dr. Garbarski and Dr. Doherty, Juanita worked with Dr. Akchurin, [sociology …

Educational Debt: Educational Loans And The Family, Keyla Navarrete
Graduate Research Symposium
Student debt is a well-documented topic in sociological literature. It is well known that
there is a student loan crisis in the United States. However, kinship or familial ties in educational debt is not as studied as individual student loans. The student debt crisis seems to reach a new catastrophic level as years pass. Yet, not much research exists that looks at external sources of financing for students such as parents, grandparents, or other familial ties. This study contributes to the literature of student debt by analyzing debt patterns across those that take out loans for themselves, their spouse, or …
Why Did You Do That?: Judgments Of Perceived Harm And Intent Influence Partner Sexism Attributions, Danielle Lauren Kellogg
Why Did You Do That?: Judgments Of Perceived Harm And Intent Influence Partner Sexism Attributions, Danielle Lauren Kellogg
Graduate Research Symposium
Both hostile sexism and benevolent sexism negatively impact women’s relationships (Hammond & Overall, 2017). Confronting helps reduce the negative effects of prejudice (Czopp et al., 2006). However, individuals must attribute prejudice to confront (Ashburn-Nardo et al., 2008). Women are generally less likely to attribute benevolent sexism (Oswald et al., 2019). Previous research suggests that differences in attributing hostile and benevolent sexism may be explained by differences in perceived harm and perceived intent (Riemer et al., 2014). However, existing work has yet to examine whether women attribute hostile and benevolent sexism differently when coming from their current romantic relationship partner. Women …
Affiliative Motivation And Trust Mitigate Negative Emotions Targeting Confronters Of Racism, Jamie Patrianakos
Affiliative Motivation And Trust Mitigate Negative Emotions Targeting Confronters Of Racism, Jamie Patrianakos
Graduate Research Symposium
Confronting anti-Black racism has the potential to reduce its occurrence (Czopp, Monteith, & Mark, 2006), but many people report fearing the potential for social backlash and opt out of confronting as a response to bias (Swim & Hyers, 1999). Social backlash following a confrontation is often associated with a perpetrator’s negative confronter-directed emotions (e.g., anger, irritation; Monteith, Devine, & Zuwerink, 1993). Research has yet to determine whether perpetrators’ negative emotional reactions following a confrontation for racism depend upon the social bond and trust shared with the confronter. This study tested the hypothesis that as trust for the confronter increases, a …

Clinicians From Marginalized Backgrounds: Epistemic Discrimination In Training And Practice, Sahar Al-Najjar, Prabha Kaundinya
Graduate Research Symposium
While the majority of psychological literature has assumed the professional’s dominant group membership, very little attention has been paid to the perspectives and preparation of clinicians who themselves hail from marginalized or stigmatized backgrounds. We are exploring how this discrimination and inequities manifests early on in the training and impacts the service delivery of minority background professionals. We wish to critique the preparation and support that these professionals receive in providing culturally competent care to their clients from diverse backgrounds. As graduate students in psychological education, and clinicians identifying from culturally diverse backgrounds – we’re are presenting this abstract on …
Computational Approach To Understanding Canonical Ca2+ Signaling, Peter Varughese
Computational Approach To Understanding Canonical Ca2+ Signaling, Peter Varughese
Graduate Research Symposium
Introduction: Calcium plays a vital role in the health and functioning of nerves and muscle tissue. Therefore, it is essential to understand the pathology of calcium-dependent intracellular signaling pathways. Through computational modeling, certain pathways in cells can be analyzed to identify patterns among common diseases.
Methods: This study utilizes live human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells tagged with green fluorescent proteins (GFP) to determine model parameters for several canonical Ca2+signaling. When the GFP fluoresces, both cytosolic and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) calcium transients are captured using thresholds and masking to increase accuracy. From there, the calcium transients are fed into a genetic …
Dynamic Exchange Of Phospholamban From Serca During Elevations In Intracellular Calcium, Sean Cleary
Dynamic Exchange Of Phospholamban From Serca During Elevations In Intracellular Calcium, Sean Cleary
Graduate Research Symposium
Cardiac muscle cells contract in response to elevations in cytosolic calcium released from an intracellular calcium store in the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). The SR calcium pump (SERCA) relaxes the heart between beats by sequestering calcium back into the SR lumen. SERCA function in the heart is regulated by its interaction with the transmembrane peptide, phospholamban (PLB), which reduces SERCA activity to maintain resting heart rate. We have previously shown that although PLB largely remains bound to SERCA during calcium elevations, SERCA slightly loses affinity for PLB when elevated calcium concentrations are sustained. Here we used fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) …

Dipolariton Propagation In A Van Der Waals Tmdc With Ψ-Shaped Channel Guides And Buffered Channel Branches, Patrick Serafin, German Kolmakov
Publications and Research
Using a computational approach based on the driven diffusion equation for a dipolariton wave packet, we simulate the diffusive dynamics of dipolaritons in an optical microcavity embedded with a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) heterogeneous bilayer encompassing a Ψ-shaped channel. By considering exciton dipolaritons, which are a three way superposition of direct excitons, indirect excitons and cavity photons; we are able to drive the dipolaritons in our system by the use of an electric voltage and investigate their diffusive properties. More precisely, we study the propagation of dipolaritons present in a MoSe2-WS2 heterostructure, where the dipolariton propagation is …

En Torno Al 'Lenguaje Inclusivo', Orlando Alba
Faculty Publications

For 20+ years in Savannah, Georgia, Parent University has successfully enhanced the ability of families to create an environment in which learning thrives for both children and parents. When the pandemic closed schools and disrupted normal programming, Parent University immediately pivoted to online programming to continue connecting families with relevant education, resources and support throughout this time of need. The pandemic also exposed a huge gap in technology and education. Therefore, Parent University is working to close that gap with our new Tech College at Parent University.
