Exploring The Lived Experience Of Full-Time College Students Recently Diagnosed With Chronic Illness, Kailey Anichini
Exploring The Lived Experience Of Full-Time College Students Recently Diagnosed With Chronic Illness, Kailey Anichini
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2019), one in four students, ages, six to nineteen, is living with a chronic disease in America. Therefore, the purpose of the project is to describe the meaning of the lived experience of college students with a chronic illness This study utilized a cross sectional, qualitative design using in-depth interviews through a semi-structured question guide. After data collection, three major themes were revealed: stressors, self-advocacy, and support. Analysis of themes revealed that campus universities could benefit from workshops involving dignity, respect, and diversity inclusion with chronic illness. This qualitative study …

It sheds light on key cultural and social factors affecting geriatric healthcare such as accessibility.
Morph- And Sex-Specific Differences In Corticosterone Of The Arizona Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma Mavortium Nebulosum), Megan Zerger
Morph- And Sex-Specific Differences In Corticosterone Of The Arizona Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma Mavortium Nebulosum), Megan Zerger
Scholars Week
Life history morph, sex, and body condition are traits that may influence stress within salamander populations because of differences in physiology and environmental conditions. Given widespread declines and the effects chronic stress can have on amphibian health, it is important to understand within-population drivers of stress and how population level variation may influence population viability. Thus, the objective of our study was to assess how corticosterone varies within the Arizona tiger salamander (Ambystoma mavortium nebulosum) population at the Mexican Cut Nature Preserve. We used a non-invasive skin swabbing method to collect baseline and elevated corticosterone from paedomorph (aquatic …
Understanding Relationships Between Stress, Snake Fungal Disease, And Parasitism In Wild Cottonmouth Snake Populations, Emma Fehlker Campbell
Understanding Relationships Between Stress, Snake Fungal Disease, And Parasitism In Wild Cottonmouth Snake Populations, Emma Fehlker Campbell
Scholars Week
Chronically raised stress levels are known to correlate with decreased immune function in vertebrates, possible leading to increased susceptibility to infections including parasitism and Snake Fungal Disease (SFD). Helminth endoparasites and Hemoparasites are frequently found in wild populations but little is known about their physiological effects. Additionally, parasite infection may have interactive effects with diseases including SFD. To our knowledge few studies have assessed potential interactions between SFD and parasites in snakes. Thus, the objective of our study is to assess the individual and interactive effects of Helminth endoparasites, hemoparasites, and snake fungal disease on cottonmouth physiological stress. We are …

Nurse-To-Patient Ratios On Patient Safety And Outcomes Within Inpatient Settings, Nicholas Odom, Jackson Allen Buechlein
Nurse-To-Patient Ratios On Patient Safety And Outcomes Within Inpatient Settings, Nicholas Odom, Jackson Allen Buechlein
Scholars Week
Nurse to patient ratios are at the forefront among healthcare safety initiatives within hospitals nationwide. •Higher nurse patient ratios force nurses to spend less time with patients, decreasing therapeutic interventions that are nonpharmacological. Much of the interventions that are not absolutely required then fall by the wayside and nurses spend the only time available on doing only the most vital tasks. However, in order to improve patient outcomes, and to promote holistic healing, reasonable nurse to patient ratios have to be implemented.

Our evidence-based practice project focuses on the benefits of delaying cord clamping. To guide our research, we used Sister Castilla Roy’s Adaptation Model of Nursing. Our research we used supports that delaying cord clamping is best for not only the baby, but also for the mother as well. We believe that a policy on delayed cord clamping should be implemented in order for health and adaption goals to be met.
Leveling Up: Differentiating Library Research And Apa Instruction For Online Students Into Different Levels And Modes, Josette M. Kubicki
Leveling Up: Differentiating Library Research And Apa Instruction For Online Students Into Different Levels And Modes, Josette M. Kubicki
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Over two and a half years, the Department of Teaching and Leading liaison librarian has evolved her virtual instruction to graduate online students by scaffolding it into different levels. What started as advocating for an optional one-shot webinar for groups of students in their asynchronous Master of Education program’s seminal course has organically grown into three different library instruction levels throughout the program: introductory (level 1), intermediate (level 2), and advanced (level 3), and a few levels for APA instruction. These days, all students start on the same level playing field by undertaking level 1 library instruction and level 1 …

Examining Assistive And Interactive Technology Needs Of Older Adults, Joshua Idachaba, Julie Blaskewicz Boron, Sarah Hubner, Marcia Shade, Natalie Manley, Meaghan Walls, Ann Fruhling
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Most older adults have expressed a desire to age in place. Advances in medicine and technology have helped improve the feasibility to fulfill this desire. Assistive and interactive technologies (AITs), which assist with at least one activity of daily living (ADL) or instrumental activity of daily living (IADL), may be key in supporting independent living, improving the user’s quality of life, and reducing caregiver burden. This study aimed to investigate the technology needs and preferences of older adults and how demographics, IADL/ADL function, and quality of life relate to these needs and preferences.
Older adults, mostly in Nebraska, were recruited …
A Brief Introduction To Openmusictheory.Com Version 2, Kyle Gullings
A Brief Introduction To Openmusictheory.Com Version 2, Kyle Gullings
College Music Society - 2021 South Central Regional Conference (36th)
When I adopted the online “textbook” Open Music Theory (OMT) in 2015, I knew no other instructors making the same leap. As a composer by trade, I felt out of my depth. This first-hand experience informs my talk, which covers the benefits and problems associated with my switch to OMT, and describes some of my team’s improvements in OMT version 2 (OMT2). OMT saves students money. Additionally, it is equally effective as proprietary texts: my course evaluation numbers and my students’ average semester grades remained steady after my switch to OMT. This affirms John Hilton III’s 2016 finding that open …
Mapping Pressure Points In The U.S. Healthcare System: A Stakeholder Analysis Of Healthcare Industries And Healthcare Cost Inflation, Gabriella Rizzo
Mapping Pressure Points In The U.S. Healthcare System: A Stakeholder Analysis Of Healthcare Industries And Healthcare Cost Inflation, Gabriella Rizzo
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Compared to other high-income countries, U.S. healthcare has similar utilization rates but much higher costs, and with mixed results on quality measures (Papanicolas, Woskie, & Jha, 2018). These patterns have led to ongoing national discussions about how to make healthcare affordable for patients. A better understanding of industry dynamics involved in rising healthcare costs could be instrumental in creating realistic solutions to control them. However, consideration of healthcare spending tends to ignore how complex interrelatedness of healthcare industries contributes to the problem of healthcare cost inflation. The nature of these network connections has vital implications for industry commitment to solving …

Working college students are confronted with several life roles that are physically and psychologically demanding, which has led to an increase in poor sleep health and daytime sleepiness. Research related to sleep health and daytime sleepiness found that 74% of college students claimed to not get enough sleep and 50% claimed to experience daytime sleepiness (Hershner & Chervin, 2014). Adopting the Job-Demands Resources (J-DR) theory (Bakker & Demerouti, …
Benevolence Toward Men And Political Conservatism Among Married And Never-Married Women, Tara Goering
Benevolence Toward Men And Political Conservatism Among Married And Never-Married Women, Tara Goering
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Research indicates that sexism allows women to justify men’s privileged status; indeed, sexism has predicted women’s conservative vote choice (Cassese & Barnes, 2018). Less is known about how women’s attitudes towards men affect political preferences. Benevolent attitudes toward men (BM) are based in beliefs about women and men’s interdependence (Glick & Fiske, 1999). Married women may experience greater interdependence and may desire to preserve beneficial structural power systems and their benefits. The present research examined the relationship of BM to political conservatism among married and never-married women. We expected that married (vs. never-married) women would more strongly endorse BM and …

Variation In Genes Responsible For Melanism In Sciurus Carolinensis And Sciurus Niger, Ibrahim Hussain
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
During the past few years, the population of melanistic squirrels in Nebraska has increased. These color variations have been associated with variation in the Melanocortin 1 Receptor (MC1R) and Agouti Signaling Protein (ASIP) genes, which are responsible for pigment production. DNA was isolated from 3 grey and 46 fox squirrels collected from Eastern Nebraska; 8 of the fox squirrels were melanistic in color. Primers were designed to amplify and sequence MC1R and three portions of ASIP to examine the extent of variation in these genes in local squirrels. The sequences were aligned to the grey squirrel reference …

Exploring Anti-Schistosoma Analog Sa01, Sarah Alsuleiman
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Schistosomiasis is a waterborne parasitic worm infection able to infect in the larval stage through direct skin penetration. This disease affects approximately 270 million people worldwide and is widespread in tropical as well as subtropical regions with higher distribution in areas lacking sufficient sanitation and safe drinking water. Although some possible alternatives are emerging, currently, the most effective drug treatment is praziquantel (PZQ). However, PZQ is only effective against the adult stage of the worm, allowing juvenile worms to progress in the infection. Furthermore, Schistosoma is developing resistance to this drug as reduced efficacy has been noted. As a result, …

Enteroviruses are single stranded RNA viruses which have caused many public health concerns, particularly in children. These viruses are responsible for polio, hand, foot, and mouth disease, many polio-like neurological diseases, and the common cold. The enterovirus called Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), a close relative to poliovirus, has been shown responsible for severe human disease, including pancreatitis, myocarditis, and type 1 diabetes. A unique advantage of studying CVB3 is the existence of a naturally occurring strain (CVB3/GA) which displays no known pathogenicity. Earlier comparative genomic studies have shown that the primary difference between avirulent CVB3/GA and the virulent strains of CVB3 …
Foot Temperature Before And After Walking In Patients With Peripheral Artery Disease, Jose Anguiano-Hernandez
Foot Temperature Before And After Walking In Patients With Peripheral Artery Disease, Jose Anguiano-Hernandez
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a pathology that can decrease blood flow to the lower limbs, resulting in the inability to regulate body temperature [1]. The effects of impaired blood flow caused by PAD on body temperature are unclear. The purpose of this study is to compare foot temperature changes before and after walking in healthy people and in patients with PAD. We hypothesize that 1) feet affected by PAD will experience a greater increase in temperature than healthy feet during walking and 2) feet affected by PAD will experience a slower rate of temperature recovery after walking compared …

Developing A Discrete Event Simulation Model To Overcome Human Trafficking, Sydney Meier
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Human trafficking is a complex issue that affects society and the global economy. This societal problem involves the commercial exchange and exploitation of people through forced labor, domestic servitude, and sex trade. Human trafficking is considered the third most profitable organized crime in the world. By analyzing the flow of monetary gains/resources, information and trafficked people from the perspective of traffickers, police force, and advocacy organizations, this research aims to develop a discrete event simulation model to represent this complex system. The following paper describes the developmental process of acquiring data and creating a base model. While the model is …
Two Sides To Every Coin: Analyzing The Historical Perspectives Of Gender Nonconforming Individuals In America, Sydney Meier
Two Sides To Every Coin: Analyzing The Historical Perspectives Of Gender Nonconforming Individuals In America, Sydney Meier
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
For some, the idea of any gender other than male/man or female/woman is incomprehensible. For others, gender is seen as a spectrum where individuals flow between man, woman, or somewhere in between. Most live in the gray area where it is recognized that two sexes and two genders exist with a little leeway for variances. The gender binary is a pervasive social construct that limits society due to the refusal of some to accept nonconforming individuals into the feminist umbrella of inclusivity. In this paper, I argue that rather than a binary, gender should be accepted as a spectrum due …

Mutations in the MC1R gene is associated with melanism, or black fur, and the presence of a 24 base pair deletion in the MC1R gene of fox and gray squirrels suggests a shared ancestry between the two species. This could be due to a mutation in a common ancestor or previous mating between species. Evidence has shown that the most likely cause for the presence of MC1R in both species is previous mating between species. If this did occur, then it is possible that other genes traveled between species along with the mutated MC1R gene. Conserved genes shared between species …

This study explores the consequence of using special-purpose and general-purpose forms of governments in public transit services. Since the 1950s, this form of local government has become prevalent yet remains an under-researched topic in the field of public administration. This study compares the performance of special-purpose and general-purpose governments in the field of public transit in the Midwest area of the United States. Performance in this context comprises four groups of variables: efficiency, effectiveness, solvency, and social responsiveness. Pooled cross-sectional data from the National Transit Database (NTD) of the agencies and census data from 2009-2018 are used for multilevel modeling …
