Women's Collegiate Lacrosse Team Cardiorespiratory Fitness And Muscular Strength, Kaylee Kaczvinsky Apr 2021

Women's Collegiate Lacrosse Team Cardiorespiratory Fitness And Muscular Strength, Kaylee Kaczvinsky

Undergraduate Research Competition

The study is characterizing cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular strength in women's collegiate lacrosse players. It will examine maximal heart rate, maximal oxygen consumption and hamstring and quadriceps muscle strength and compare between positions. There are multiple athletes that each play a different position which will affect their cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular strength. For maximal heart rate and oxygen consumption, a cycle ergometer will increase in work rate until the point of fatigue. A Cosmed Quark metabolic cart will measure oxygen consumption and heart rate. The muscular strength test measures the athlete's quadriceps and hamstring ratio at two different isokinetic speeds. …

Pronatalism In U.S. Media And Government Policy, Clarice B. Carl Apr 2021

Pronatalism In U.S. Media And Government Policy, Clarice B. Carl

Student Research Symposium

This research paper is an analysis of pronatalist ideologies that are ingrained in America’s mainstream media, such as film, television, print magazines, and advertisements, and in government policy, such as restrictions to access abortions or affordable birth control. These practices reinforce the notion that women should have an innate need to become a mother, while also creating conflict for women who don’t wish to have children. Although second-wave feminism drastically transformed societal gender roles for women, but post second-wave media representations of motherhood created harmful ideologies like “Super Mom” and new momisms “Intensive Mothering.” In addition to these narrowed ideologies, …

My poster will summarize many of these problems, as well as examine supporting evidence and evaluate different proposals for criminal justice reform.

A Psychoanalytic Reading Of Heironymus Bosch's Tondals Vision, Katelyn Doherty Apr 2021

A Psychoanalytic Reading Of Heironymus Bosch's Tondals Vision, Katelyn Doherty

Art and Art History Presentations

An artist is often impossible to separate from their work. Hieronymus Bosch is no exception. His unique immersion in religion, alchemy, and art influenced and are portrayed in his paintings. By looking at his painting Tondal’s Vision under the scope of both religion and psychoanalysis, it reveals new discoveries and perspectives. The theoretical framework of psychoanalysis from author, Anne D’Alleva, aids in uncovering Bosch’s obsession with religious symbolism. This suggests that he is dealing with an underlying quarrel. By discovering the 1475 manuscript of Les Visions du Chevalier Tondal (The Visions of Tondal) it reveals who “Tondal” is through the …

Investigating The Effect Of The Wee-1.3 And Pam-1 Mutations On Meiosis After The Fertilization Of Oocytes In C. Elegans, Sophie Lear, Alex Bender Apr 2021

Investigating The Effect Of The Wee-1.3 And Pam-1 Mutations On Meiosis After The Fertilization Of Oocytes In C. Elegans, Sophie Lear, Alex Bender

Biology Presentations

Currently, we are working with two genes: pam-1, which functions in the asymmetric division in meiosis and corresponding polarity, and wee-1.3, which functions in oocyte maturation. The mutation pam-1 is known to disturb embryo viability and reduces the hatch rate to 2% in the worms. However, a rescue mutation, wee-1.3, is known to bring the hatch rate up to 42% because polarity and asymmetry defects are suppressed. From previous research we know that during meiosis, the pam-1 mutation results in meiotic exit delays and other mutant phenotypes such as failure of meiosis II. Currently, we are imaging …

This project is divided into two sections. The first section is a comparison between the NBA and WNBA, using performance metrics from game statistics. I researched the history of women in sports and specifically read about how women first became integrated into the game of soccer. In the regression for section one, we used a few selected performance metrics and minutes in order to observe any relationships between specific skills and minutes. We also focused on the difference between the leagues in terms of what game stats are more or less significant.

In the second section of this paper, we …

The Real 1920s: How The Immigration Act Of 1924 Empowered And Encouraged Organized Nationalism, Amanda Pawling

History Presentations

The 1920s were a key era for women and women’s rights. It was also a key era for immigration reform and antiimmigrant sentiment. My research is asking if and how there is a correlation between these different takes on one decade. What my research has shown is that while women were fighting for equality and their right to vote, many were also fighting for traditional family values, family roles, conservatism, and nativism. When it comes to the KKK and its rhetoric of America first and anti-immigration, women were not only in the background but front and center in the fight. …

Research Proposal: Clarifying Any Interactions Between Cytoskeletal Proteins And The Aminopeptidase Pam-1, Alexis Ayala Apr 2021

Research Proposal: Clarifying Any Interactions Between Cytoskeletal Proteins And The Aminopeptidase Pam-1, Alexis Ayala

Biology Presentations

Caenorhabditis elegans is a transparent roundworm that functions as an ideal model organism for studying the complex processes that occur during embryonic cell division. The cell division process is comprised of distinct phases that ensure the development of a healthy and robust embryo. The cytokinesis phase is characterized by the formation of a contractile ring near the middle of the embryo. When this contractile ring constricts, the embryo can effectively divide into two cells. Recent work in the Lyczak laboratory has focused on better understanding how the aminopeptidase PAM-1 works in conjunction with cytoskeletal proteins to regulate the actomyosin cytoskeleton. …

Disparities In Sports Media Representation, Madison Handwerger Apr 2021

Disparities In Sports Media Representation, Madison Handwerger

Media and Communication Studies Presentations

My research focuses on the differences of representation of genders in sports media. Being a collegiate female athlete myself, this topic really hits home for me, and is a big passion of mine. The primary text of my project is the ESPN television talk show, First Take. The show in itself reinforces a gender ideology with the way it is formatted, having two male analysts and a female host, however the host is not allowed to speak and share her opinions on the topic or issue at hand. That job is left for the male co-analysts. Before beginning my research, …

Undoing The Unhinged Woman: An Examination Of Contemporary Media Representation Of Women And Ideology, Alyssa Scanlon Apr 2021

Undoing The Unhinged Woman: An Examination Of Contemporary Media Representation Of Women And Ideology, Alyssa Scanlon

Media and Communication Studies Presentations

The unhinged woman is a character trope that has popped up frequently in mainstream media for the past few years. This trope is utilized as a way to present an alternative representation of women; one that functions as being empowering, complex, and overall a new and positive representation of a constant misrepresented minority in media. Proceeding with a textual analysis of the 2014 film Gone Girl and the 2020 miniseries The Undoing, I was able to examine the salient attributes through a feminist lens. Further discovering that the unhinged woman trope is actually detrimental to the overall representation of women …

Session 1a Sustainable Agriculture In A Market-Based System: The Problem With Organic Certification, Anna Chen, Lauren Ho, Marie Peng, Yiran He

The Youth Environmental Alliance in Higher Education

The organic agriculture movement began as a way to maintain the divine relationship between the Earth and its processes while preserving the soil’s nutrients and combating climate change through agriculture. These spiritual origins are a far-cry from the political and economic behemoth that is now the multi-billion-dollar organic produce and certification industry. This talk will discuss the merits and drawbacks of market-based systems created to promote sustainability under the lens of organic certification.

Session 2a Impact Investing In China: Making Sustainable Money, Maximilian Kamp, Eric Rinke, Elias Poggemann, Nina Baal

The Youth Environmental Alliance in Higher Education

Over the past decade, investing in sustainability has become more established all over the world, even on Wall Street where the only concern seemed to be a high ROI. Recently, this trend also has gained a foothold in China which has traditionally preferred economic growth over environmental and social impact. However, there are still misconceptions existing about sustainable funds. We discuss the requirements needed to set up an environmental, social and governance fund (ESG) in China. Based on real life examples we show that financial return and making the world a better place aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive.
