Relationships Between Exposure, Knowledge, And Concern In Regards To A Rat Zoonotic Disease As Determined By A Survey Of Chicago Residents., Ashriya Ashik Patel
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The threat of increased human and rat population density coupled with the high probability of flooding, based on future climate predictions, could put the Chicago Metropolitan area at risk for a Leptospirosis outbreak. Understanding the relationship between residents' knowledge, concern, and exposure to rat-associated diseases can help monitor and mitigate at-risk behavior that increases the likelihood of spillover events. Using survey data from The Chicago Rat Project, partners with the Lincoln Park Zoo, this study identifies residents' lack of knowledge surrounding Leptospirosis is independent of possible exposure risk or concern regarding rat zoonotic diseases.
Holding Space For Voice: Using Powerful Questions And Appreciative Inquiry Conversations To Understand Values And Needs, Annie Bélanger, Preethi Gorecki
Holding Space For Voice: Using Powerful Questions And Appreciative Inquiry Conversations To Understand Values And Needs, Annie Bélanger, Preethi Gorecki
Presentations
Change management is often process-centered instead of people-centered. People are centered when we focus on what is good. Appreciative Inquiry’s strengths-based, positive approach to organizational change allows leaders and facilitators to re-center individuals’ voices.
Appreciative Inquiry helps people move toward a shared vision for the future by engaging others in considering what is good, what could be, what should be, and how to co-create the future. It can foster equitable processes that decenter whiteness and deficit-mindset. Powerful conversations connect thoughts and feelings, result in new ideas, develop new perspectives and understandings, and have an increased potential for action. Developing conversations …

The idea that there are 2 distinct processing modes is seen throughout social and cognitive psychology research. One mode is generally fast, automatic, and relatively effortless, while the other is slow, systematic, and effortful. One mechanism of effortful processing is cognitive reflection which is one’s ability to reflect on their intuition. The Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) is a 3-item measure that quantifies a person’s ability to recognize an intuitive answer as incorrect and identify the correct response. Additionally, a yea-yeaing score was collected to measure how often a person agrees with a statement and its opposite (i.e., endorses contradictory beliefs). …

Generation Onlyfans: The Internalization Of Objectification In Young Adults, Grace Sinclair, D. Gage Jordan
Posters-at-the-Capitol
The term raunch culture refers to recent changes in Western culture that promotes overtly sexual representations of women, wherein women are objectified, objectify one another, and are encouraged to objectify themselves. With the growth of the internet and social media, raunch culture has expanded rapidly. This hypersexualized culture provides people opportunities to engage in positive social comparison, but perhaps more insidiously, negative social comparison. Although some women perceive aspects of raunch culture as empowering, it is possible that this construct could relate to the phenomenology of depression in women. This study examined the various relationships between raunch culture, depression, social …

Problem or Major Purpose. Parasocial relationships are one-sided interactions individuals have with fictional characters or famous celebrities (Derrick et al., 2008). Parasocial relationships can be beneficial for the exploration and development of one’s own romantic emotions, sexuality, or ideal self (Derrick et al., 2008; Erikson & Dal Cin, 2018). Conversely, there may be drawbacks such as unrealistic expectations and dysfunctional beliefs (Spiranec, 2018). For example, the young adult genre often contains harmful tropes that expose the audience to dysfunctional relationship behaviors such as portraying abuse as romantic, normalizing slut shaming, and fetishizing virginity (Spiranec, 2018). The current study examines the …

Ischemic Preconditioning Improves Time Until Failure During Rock Climbing Specific Tasks, Nahir Negron-Fernandez, Ian Koskinen
Ischemic Preconditioning Improves Time Until Failure During Rock Climbing Specific Tasks, Nahir Negron-Fernandez, Ian Koskinen
Celebration of Student Scholarship
Rock climbers may experience fatigue in the form of pain in the forearm muscles, potentially leading to an inability to maintain their grip, which could result in a fall. Ischemic Preconditioning (IPC), which is the process of repeatedly occluding and reperfusing blood flow to an extremity via an inflatable cuff, has been s8hown to improve time until failure. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of IPC on time until failure in a rock-climbing-specific task. 13 participants (8-males & 5-females) completed two separate (IPC and Control) isometric rock-climbing-specific fingertip holds. The IPC protocol consisted of 3 cycles …

Plasma And Fecal Cortisol Metabolite Concentrations Following An Acth Challenge In Captive Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos)., Justin A. Pinero, Diana Jr Lafferty
Celebration of Student Scholarship
Fecal cortisol metabolites (FCMs) are increasingly used to index physiological stress in wildlife. Cortisol and other glucocorticoids (GCs) act to mobilize glucose, providing immediate energy to respond to environmental perturbations. Cortisol, the predominant GC in most mammals, is metabolized by the liver and excreted as FCMs in feces. However, for FCMs to serve as a meaningful physiological index, we must understand the link between circulating stress hormone levels in the blood that impact host physiology and expression of measurable fecal hormone metabolites. Thus, my goal is to quantify the link between blood cortisol and FCM concentration. To achieve my goal, …

Bystanders’ Ability To Provide High Quality Cpr Through Fatigue, Samantha Nelson, Madison Eddy
Celebration of Student Scholarship
Immediate activation and adequate performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are imperative to the survival of individuals in cardiac arrest. More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital each year, making immediate bystander CPR imperative to survival. The purpose of this study was to determine the average bystanders’ ability to provide high quality CPR through fatigue in multiple scenarios. Specifically examining the amount of CPR training, strength of the bystander, endurance of the bystander, and emotional stability of a bystander to perform under stress. Forty adult participants (male n=27, female n=13) completed a questionnaire regarding their level of CPR …

Importance Of Reference Points In Orientation In A Current By Juvenile Mummichog (Fundulus Heteroclitus), Ryan C. Heines, Jill Leonard
Celebration of Student Scholarship
Recent studies on the dispersal-relevant behavior of marine fish larvae suggest that they possess the behavioral capabilities necessary to directly affect dispersal outcomes. Current research has shifted to determining to what extent larvae and young juveniles can manage their dispersal, as well as what sensory cues they can use for orientation and settlement. There is little contemporary data to suggest that larvae can detect the speed and direction of current without an external reference, which suggests that they lack control over their trajectories and eventual settlement location. The mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) is a species of marine killifish that …
Integration Of Multiple Datasets To Evaluate Red Fox Distribution, Laura S. Whipple, Diana Jr Lafferty
Integration Of Multiple Datasets To Evaluate Red Fox Distribution, Laura S. Whipple, Diana Jr Lafferty
Celebration of Student Scholarship
To address declining global biodiversity, large-scale and long-term standardized wildlife surveys allow biologists to directly compare data across time and space to identify drivers of species declines. However, standardized surveys are resource-intensive, often leading to significant data gaps. One source of abundant and inexpensive data are wildlife observations from the public (e.g., community/citizen science). When combined, community observations can provide wildlife data from areas that lack high-quality survey data, while standardized surveys can account for the opportunistic nature that makes community observations difficult to use in wildlife studies. Therefore, integrating high-quality survey data with abundant community observations may produce more …

Efficacy Of Psychoactive Treatments Examined In Contextual-Fear Conditioned Paradigms Used To Elicit Symptoms Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Mice Models, Weiland R. Dyer, Jd D. Payne
Celebration of Student Scholarship
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can be characterized as a complex mental disorder by its complications in cognitive functioning and behavioral deficits often onset by a traumatic event in one's life. Due to the limited efficacy of therapeutic interventions, the current treatment for this disorder includes psychotherapy, exposure based therapy, and medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) cultivated for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Within recent years, different psychoactive substances with known psychotropic and hallucinogenic effects have been reviewed as novel treatments for acute stress disorders. Fear eliciting paradigms are used to represent the acute stress symptoms that facilitate …
Passing Through Beringia: Enhanced Sampling Resolves The History Of Intercontinental Dispersal, Annika Desai
Passing Through Beringia: Enhanced Sampling Resolves The History Of Intercontinental Dispersal, Annika Desai
Celebration of Student Scholarship
Terrestrial communities in North America were assembled through a history of climate-driven colonization across the Bering Land Bridge, which periodically connected Asia to North America during the Pleistocene. Taxa moving across the bridge carried their parasites, and studying these parasites can inform our understanding of the host’s intercontinental dispersal. For instance, the pika, a small lagomorph, carries a wide diversity of parasites that have recently indicated two different aspects of pika biogeographic history. Phylogenetic studies of Schizorchis, a genus of tapeworms that resides in pikas, demonstrated two episodes of North American colonization from Asia roughly 10 million and 4 …

Sea-Phages
Antibiotic resistance is a global healthcare concern because it poses a threat to effectively treating bacterial infections and the need for alternative therapeutics are urgently required. Phage therapy, which uses viruses to treat bacterial infections, is a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics. Phages have also been widely used in the food industry to prevent microbial growth on certain foods and are currently being explored as a method for bioremediation of oil spills and wastewater treatment. Although phages are ubiquitous in nature, many have yet to be discovered. Through the SEA-PHAGES (Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science) program …

Antinociceptive Effects Of G-Protein Biased Mu Opioid Receptor Agonists In Male And Female Rats With Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy, Tilak Patel Md
Graduate Medical Education (GME) Resident and Fellow Research Day Posters
Aim: Mu-opioid receptor (MOR) agonists are often prescribed for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced neuropathy (CIN). Recent drug development strategies have focused on opioids with signaling profiles that “bias” activation of specific intracellular pathways (e.g., G-protein signaling) over others with the aim of increasing therapeutic selectivity. However, it is unknown if the variances in these signaling profiles at the MOR differentially modulate the antinociceptive effects of MOR agonists against neuropathic pain. In the present study, we tested a series of MOR agonists of varying G-protein signaling bias in a rat model of CIN. Methods: CIN was induced in male and female …

Effects Of Foam Rolling And Static Stretching On Dorsiflexion Of The Ankle Joint, Anfernee Powell
Effects Of Foam Rolling And Static Stretching On Dorsiflexion Of The Ankle Joint, Anfernee Powell
Graduate Research Showcase
Purpose: To determine whether foam rolling (FR) alone, static stretching (SS) alone, or FR + SS together has the greater acute and long-term effect on range of motion (ROM) in individuals that have limited ankle dorsiflexion (< 20°). Ankle dorsiflexion was of interest because mobility at the ankle has strong implications for reduction of injury and performance enhancement. Background: As most individuals wish to decrease joint stiffness and enhance performance, the most effective method to do so is in question with a variety of mobility techniques available. There are several methods that are useful for improving ROM, with SS being one of the most widely used methods. A relatively new method, FR, is a form of self-myofascial release that has been …
