Side-By-Side Comparison Of Fluorescent Mg2+ Sensor Platforms, Hailey Lightle, Wren Konickson, Joey Bogaudo, Evan Pratt Dr
Celebration of Student Scholarship
Mg2+ is an essential metal that regulates the structure and function of biological macromolecules, including enzymes and nucleic acids, and cellular metabolites. Mg2+ is integral to supporting nerve and muscle function, the immune system and bone health, and Mg2+ deficiency and dysregulation of Mg2+ homeostasis are associated with the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. Despite the well-accepted role of Mg2+ in preserving cellular and organismal health, the activity and regulation of Mg2+ at the single cell level is ill-defined. Genetically encoded fluorescent sensors can be used to illuminate the localization and behavior of metal ions in cells with …
Thermal Tolerances Of The Invasive Macrophyte Hydrilla Verticillata, Joshua Williams
Thermal Tolerances Of The Invasive Macrophyte Hydrilla Verticillata, Joshua Williams
Graduate Research Showcase
Invasive species often rapidly spread due to their ability to adapt to a wide range of habitats they can occupy and lack of competition. Hydrilla verticillata is an invasive aquatic macrophyte that has spread across the United States due to human activities. Like many aquatic plants, Hydrilla has the ability to reproduce through fragmentation of the mother plant. In this method, Hydrilla fragments are then dispersed by water current to other areas where they can settle and grow. To date, little is known about the abiotic conditions that may restrict the spread of invasive Hydrilla. However, compared to other macrophytes …

Finding Eternal Life At The Intersection Of Bergson And Proust, Kelly Capers
Graduate Research Showcase
Finding Eternal Life at the Intersection of Bergson and Proust is a research project that explores the relationship of spirit and matter attempting to answer the question: Does the Proust Effect prove humans have an eternal soul? The Proust Effect is defined as “the vivid reliving of events from the past through sensory stimuli” based on a passage in the novel Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust. Applying quantum mechanics to Proust’s themes of time and memory and philosopher Henri Bergson’s studies of matter and spirit, one can examine how the body and soul connect. Proust’s labyrinth of language offers a …

Accelerometry Reveals Hidden Variation In The Movement Response Of Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Horridus) To Roadways, Anna F. Tipton, Morgan L. Thompson, Dominic L. Desantis
Graduate Research Showcase
Roadways are among the most widespread and disruptive anthropogenic land use features that influence the behavior and movement of wildlife. Negative impacts including vehicle-induced mortality, habitat destruction and fragmentation, and creating barriers to movement have been well documented across taxa, but the fine scale behavioral impact of roadways on smaller, cryptic species has yet to be directly examined. Using a novel integration of emerging spatial analyses and tri-axial accelerometry, we quantified spatial and temporal aspects of movement and space use in order to investigate the coarse and fine scale influence of roadways on the movement patterns of Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus …

Neuroplasticity has been a rapidly expanding area of research, and its findings have elucidated the potential of taking advantage of some of its components for the treatment of various neural pathologies. Stroke is the most common cause of long-term disability, and it is a disease process that affects many people. There are many rehabilitation programs that seek to restore a patient’s motor and cognitive functions after stroke; if not fully, then at least partially. Unfortunately, mental health changes contribute in large part to the overall disability of a patient, but these changes are not always targeted in these programs. In …
Quality Of Life Before And After Cosmetic Surgery: Should Body Dysmorphic Disorder Be Considered An Absolute Or Relative Contraindication For Cosmetic Surgery?, Lindsay Conlisk
Capstone Showcase
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) has historically been regarded as a strong contraindication for cosmetic plastic surgery. New research now suggests that the contraindications to cosmetic surgery in patients with BDD may not be so absolute. This paper reviews diagnostic criteria, diagnostic challenges, and current standard of treatment of BDD. It then presents the idea of insight analysis in the BDD patient as a significant factor in determining if patients with BDD may or may not benefit from cosmetic surgery or procedures.

Vulvodynia: Making The Diagnosis And Improving Treatment Outcomes, Sophia Campbell
Capstone Showcase
Vulvodynia is an underdiagnosed condition that affects about 25% of women1. Patients report frustration and a lack of knowledge in the medical community regarding their symptoms of vulvar pain. Painful penetration makes performing an internal pelvic exam difficult, and patients may avoid annual gynecological appointments due to fear. It is imperative for providers to understand and implement the correct approach for accurate diagnosis. Once the diagnosis of vulvodynia has been identified, the multimodal treatment plan should be implemented to include pharmacological therapy, referral to physical therapy, and psychotherapy. With continued research and the use of evidence-based practice, the gap in …
Conditions That Mimic Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In A Pediatric Population: A Diagnostic Guide For Primary Care Providers, Elena Schatell
Conditions That Mimic Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In A Pediatric Population: A Diagnostic Guide For Primary Care Providers, Elena Schatell
Capstone Showcase
This article outlines common neurobiological, developmental, psychological, and other medical diagnoses and conditions that symptomatically mimic attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the pediatric population. Many of these disorders are comorbid with ADHD, but they may also be misdiagnosed as ADHD. Due to the similarity in presentation, these conditions must be included when formulating a differential diagnosis. Accurately diagnosing a child with ADHD requires a thorough evaluation and work up to rule out diagnoses on the differential.
