Categorizing Characteristic Regions Of Nightside High-Latitude Ionospheric Irregularities Using A Machine Learning Approach., Chintan Thakrar
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
We are making use of the vast amount of publicly available GNSS data to develop a data driven supervised machine learning model to categorize to a predefined set of characteristic high-latitude ionospheric irregularity nightside regions. The goal of this model is to predict whether the scintillating instance of high-frequency data was recorded in the auroral oval vs. the polar cap with a high level of confidence. The source regions were determined using the SUSSI instruments onboard the DMSP satellites. The model is trained and tested with events extracted by thresholding the low-rate data from receivers from both characteristic nightside regions. …

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
In the last two decades, CubeSats and similar small form factor satellites have been growing in popularity. These small satellites can take on important science missions in Low Earth Orbit for a fraction of the cost compared to traditional satellites, and have been deployed to provide scientific studies, educational tools, technology demonstrations, and even commercial purposes. The main reason the Hermes team brought the idea of constructing and maintaining Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s first student-designed CubeSat, called Hermes-I, is to provide an educational tool and scientific studies related to today’s aerospace industry, in collaboration with Dr. Jennifer Smith. Dr. Smith is …

Measurement Of The Salivary Hormones Cortisol And Melatonin In Embry-Riddle Students, Brianna Magdaleno
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
College students tend to have more stress and less sleep than many people. Cortisol and melatonin are stress hormones responding to a physical or emotional stressor. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate these essential hormones in saliva samples from students at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University coursing the majors of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The selected course within this major is EGR 120 with the CATIA computer program. Saliva samples were obtained before and after taking the class using tubes and saliva test kits, in which students were asked to spit into the tube, and samples were analyzed …
