Participants will learn the value and processes for documenting conversation of Indigenous languages. Participants will learn from examples of conversation documentation projects and from discussion, why and how to accomplish such projects themselves.

Day 1: Become aware of the issue - Why and how to document conversation

• (45 min. discussion) class members introduce themselves and their interest in conversation documentation.
• (45 min. presentation and discussion) View examples of conversation documentation and discuss strengths and weaknesses of who is recorded, audio, video, transcription, translation, usability.

Research Psychology Theses

Twitter is a vast source of qualitative and quantitative data on human interaction. This proposed study examines group identity strength (GIS), measured as how strongly one identifies with a group, as a factor of positive and negative partisanship in the US by observing tweets and follower interactions. The top 10 words collocated with “love” and “hate” will be analyzed for each level of GIS for liberals and conservatives. Expected findings are that those with stronger GIS will display more in-group favoritism than out-group animosity, and that the top collocates of love and hate will be different for liberals and conservatives.

Abstract

This poster illustrates the use of audio sensors to detect the response of birds and speakers to startle them. Modern agriculture suffers from frequent losses due to the destruction of crops by birds; thus, inexpensive tools need to be developed to protect crops. The general idea is to detect high-frequency birdcalls which triggers an audio circuit designed to make noise. A consideration of the feasibility for use in the field will be discussed, as well as potential improvements and limitations.

MEMESat-1 is a flying transceiver for the amateur radio community with a packet data rate of 9600 baud (Lassiter et al). This severely limits the amount of data that can be transmitted on each pass by aground observer, hence, compression must occur.
