Characterizing Cold Water Drownings In The Great Lakes, Elizabeth T. Helfrich, Anthony Lagina

Since the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, Great Lakes drownings have increased. The Great Lakes are a unique and understudied environment due to being cold, fresh water, and resuscitation protocols and guidelines being derived from warm, primarily salt water environments. We analyzed open sources materials to find records of Great Lakes drownings from 2021-2023 and analyze the data looking for trends in cold and warm water drownings.

We found 80.0-85.0% of the included drowning victims were male and had an average age of 38.0-39.0 years old. 40.0%-57.7% of Great Lakes drowning deaths were in cold water; of those, Lake Michigan had …

A Systematic Review Of The Social Determinants Of Health In Shoulder Arthroplasty Outcomes, Allison Boland, John Pum, Michael Gaudiani, Matthew A. Gasparro

This systematic review investigates the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on outcomes in shoulder arthroplasty (SA). SA, a common orthopedic procedure, has seen an increasing focus on SDOH influencing postoperative results. The study aims to comprehensively assess this impact on both surgical and patient-reported outcomes.

Through a systematic search of databases, 34 studies (2011-2021) met the inclusion criteria, involving 4,825,547 patients. Explored SDOH included insurance status, race/ethnicity, age, sex, income, social support, and veteran status. Outcomes considered were length of stay, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scores, total SA rates, revision rates, complication rates, and discharge status.

Background: Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive and malignant brain tumor known for its rapid progression and unfavorable prognosis. The standard treatment options primarily involve radiation and temozolomide, however recurrence is inevitable.

B7H3/CD276, an immunomodulatory transmembrane glycoprotein, demonstrates tumor-specific expression, with limited presence in normal healthy tissue, making it a promising and attractive treatment target in GBM. AbbV155 is an antibody drug conjugate that inhibits BCL-XL and specifically targets B7H3 (CD276) on GBM cells with the goal of selectively eliminating viable tumor cells.

Background: Veterans frequently report sleep disturbances. However, little is known about which military or life events most frequently influence veterans' sleep. The focus of this study is to report the specific military and life events that had the most negative effect on sleep quality in veterans by utilizing the Military Service Sleep Assessment (MSSA).

Method: Post 9/11 veterans (N = 373) completed an assessment battery examining sleep disturbances, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and of dysfunctional and recovery cognitions. The number of Latinas who earn a doctoral degree has increased steadily in the United States, however, the numbers fail to describe the experiences of doctoral Latina students.

The qualitative pilot study was conceived from a graduate Mexican American Studies course project. The study collected testimonio of three Latina doctoral students enrolled in a counseling program at a public university in Texas. Platica was utilized in the research methodology and design, a mutualistic approach that honors the participants testimonio instead of the classic approach of extracting information from the participants.

Chromatin Pattern Quantification For The Differentiation Of White Blood Cells, Paul Young, Ryan Cordner, Abigail Gordhamer

Nuclear chromatin patterns have been used historically to distinguish between different developmental stages and lineages of white blood cells. While it is common to characterize cells based on arbitrary ‘open’ or ‘closed’ chromatin patterns, quantification of chromatin data is lacking. By extracting nuclei from a database of white blood cells and running fractal analyses using TWOMBLI, we were able to produce meaningful data quantifying chromatin patterns. Our data were put through a random forest algorithm which grouped each point based on relationship probability. This study explores the attitudes towards mental health within the aviation community, focusing on the perspectives of flight instructors and flight students within a university based part 141 program. Mental health is a critical aspect of aviation safety, yet recent airline incidents have brought the public’s focus on how the FAA deals, or doesn’t deal with mental health. Younger generations of pilots have been brought up with the idea that mental health is something to openly talk about. This comes at a stark contrast to how the FAA works.

Data have been collected in a farmland area located two nautical miles south of Daytona Beach International Airport (Class C Airspace). Enhancing food quality measurement is a necessity to guarantee food safety and adherence to health regulations. Current methods involve lab testing which are time-consuming, costly, destructive and require skilled workers. Spectroscopy has the potential to overcome these challenges. This study employs a multi-mode point spectroscopy method to distinguish food products according to their spectral characteristics,. The system records fluorescence, excited at 365 and 405 nm, visible-near infrared (Vis-NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectra. Accurate crop yield predictions can help farmers make adjustments or changes in their farming practices to optimize their harvest. Remote sensing data is an inexpensive approach to collecting massive amounts of data that could be utilized for predicting crop yield. This study employed linear regression and spatial linear models were used to predict soybean yield with data from Landsat 8 OLI. Early results from a pilot survey administered to contrasting groups of teachers and principals with varying degrees of familiarity with formalized teacher leadership (TL) revealed similarities with how teacher leadership is being practiced in schools, but also differences in how TL is conceptualized. Scale scores from the 4-factor model (Sharing Leadership, Principal Selection, Sharing Expertise, and Supra-Practitioner) from Angelle and DeHart’s (2010) Teacher Leadership Inventory were similar across groups, but significant differences among TL and non-TL groups were present in three items: teachers ask each other for assistance with student behavior, teachers offer assistance on how to teach new topics, …

This study employed a crossover randomized control trial design to compare the experiences of a diverse group of in-service teachers preparing to be instructional coaches as they engaged in virtual simulation activities (treatment condition) and a standard online module of materials (control condition). Analyses performed on quantitative and qualitative survey data collected following their engagement with both conditions showed no statistically significant differences in self-reported measures of preparedness to coach or in the helpfulness of the activities.
