Tribalism, Science Denial, And Its Violation Of Stephen J. Gould's Noma Model, Annelise Northcott Feb 2025

Tribalism, Science Denial, And Its Violation Of Stephen J. Gould's Noma Model, Annelise Northcott

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This presentation explores how tribalism fuels science denial by breaching Stephen J. Gould’s Non-Overlapping Magisteria model, which distinguishes empirical science from value systems. Tribalism leads to group polarization, imposing ideological beliefs on the realm of science and dismissing evidence that threatens group identity. Case studies, like the leaded gasoline controversy of the 20th century, demonstrate how loyalty to identity distorts scientific discourse. Psychological factors, such as confirmation bias, exacerbate this issue. By recognizing these violations, the presentation highlights the importance of interdisciplinary strategies to restore trust in science while respecting Gould’s framework, offering hope in combating science denial.

Investigating The Intersection Of ‘God Of The Gaps’ And Noma, Francesca Hammerstein Feb 2025

Investigating The Intersection Of ‘God Of The Gaps’ And Noma, Francesca Hammerstein

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This study explores the intersection between God-of-the-gaps arguments and whether these arguments cooperate with the guidelines of Stephen Jay Gould’s view of “non-overlapping magisteria” (NOMA). God-of-the-gaps arguments are used to explain current unexplained scientific phenomena by crediting God. If new scientific discoveries can eventually explain these phenomena, this would decrease the evidence for God. Three perspectives on this argument are explored: both theological and scientific arguments against God-of-the-gaps and an argument in favor of God-of-the-gaps. Through reading these perspectives, the findings suggest that each point of view presents an argument showing that God-of-the-gaps does not cooperate with the NOMA guidelines.

Examination Of Solar Canopies On Erau Campus Parking Lots, Athena Diakatos Jan 2025

Examination Of Solar Canopies On Erau Campus Parking Lots, Athena Diakatos

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

In 2023, President Biden set a U.S. goal of achieving carbon free power sector by 2035 and net zero emissions by 2050. This ambitious goal will require new energy generation strategies, including solar photovoltaic (PV) farms. Most solar farms have been built on rural, undeveloped land. While cheap, the use of this land destroys ecosystems, reduces farmland, and creates losses due to long transmission distances. By moving solar generation to urban areas these problems are mitigated but introduces a new problem of where to put them. Solar canopies aim to fix that issue by using already existing parking lots. This …

The Effects Of Improper Waste Disposal On Marine Life: Why Does It Matter And How Can We Prevent It?, Abbey Ward, Ashlee Davis

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Improperly disposed of waste, specifically plastic, can end up in the ocean and negatively impact marine life, and in turn, negatively impact human health. Marine life, such as turtles, have faced serious health consequences and even death from entanglement in abandoned fishing gear and consuming plastics. Larger plastic particles can break down into smaller particles known as microplastics which can harbor harmful substances (such as Bisphenol A and persistent organic pollutants) and can cause several negative health effects when consumed by marine life such as loss of nutrition, starvation, and death. Microplastics have been found in 75% of commercial fish. …
