We applied spectroscopy, microscopy, diffraction, and aqueous chemistry methods to investigate the persistence of metals in water and sediments from the Animas River 13 days after the Gold King Mine spill (August 5, 2015). The Upper Animas River watershed, located in San Juan Colorado, is heavily mineralized and impacted by acid mine drainage, with low pH water and elevated metal concentrations in sediments (108.4 ± 1.8 mg kg-1 Pb, 32.4 ± 0.5 mg kg-1 Cu, 729.6 ± 5.7 mg kg-1 Zn, and 51 314.6 ± 295.4 mg kg-1 Fe). Phosphate and nitrogen species were detected in water and sediment samples from …

Comment Data From Ceri, 4-3-2017, Cornell Erulemaking Initiative

Cornell e-Rulemaking Initiative Publications

This file contains comment data from ten live policy discussions held on RegulationRoom.org and SmartParticipation.com from May 2010 to November 2016. A cross-disciplinary group of Cornell researchers, the Cornell eRulemaking Initiative (CeRI), created the experimental platforms for public participation in policymaking processes. CeRI used selected live federal agency rulemakings and other policy discussions to discover how the design and process of online engagement can support public discussion that is informed, inclusive and insightful.

Article abstract: We directly compare trip willingness to pay (WTP) values between 1985 and 2015 stated preference surveys of private party Grand Canyon boaters using identically designed valuation methods. The temporal gap of 30 years between these two studies is well beyond that of any tests of WTP temporal stability in the literature. Comparisons were made of mean WTP estimates for four hypothetical Colorado River flow level scenarios. WTP values from the 1985 survey were adjusted to 2015 levels using the consumer price index. Mean WTP precision was estimated through …

Application Of Environmental Dna-Based Occurrence Data In Modeling Wood Frog (Rana Sylvatica) Distribution In Interior Alaska, Mark A. Spangler, J. Andrés López, Falk Huettmann Apr 2017

Application Of Environmental Dna-Based Occurrence Data In Modeling Wood Frog (Rana Sylvatica) Distribution In Interior Alaska, Mark A. Spangler, J. Andrés López, Falk Huettmann

Graduate Student Research

Knowledge of wood frog distribution in Alaska is incomplete due to insufficient baseline occurrence data. A short season of activity and difficult access to remote areas restrict implementation of consistent monitoring efforts. Detecting the presence of species in aquatic landscapes using environmental DNA (eDNA) assays is increasingly applied as a monitoring method in wildlife surveys. However, uncertainties regarding the technique’s sensitivity to environmental variables and human error have thus far prevented its widespread adoption in studies of species distribution. Predictive models built on machine learning algorithms can help provide precise descriptions of species distribution using eDNA occurrence data, but they …

Development, Validation, And Evaluation Of An Assay For The Detection Of Wood Frogs (Rana Sylvatica) In Environmental Dna, Mark A. Spangler, Falk Huettmann, Ian C. Herriott, J. Andrés López Apr 2017

Development, Validation, And Evaluation Of An Assay For The Detection Of Wood Frogs (Rana Sylvatica) In Environmental Dna, Mark A. Spangler, Falk Huettmann, Ian C. Herriott, J. Andrés López

Graduate Student Research

We developed and describe a qPCR assay for the detection of wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) using environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling. A single primer set was designed to amplify a 115-bp region of the wood frog cytochrome B gene and assessed for target specificity. There was no evidence of amplification in eleven non-target species. We evaluated the utility of the primer set in qPCR assay by conducting geo-referenced eDNA field surveys in Interior Alaska. Results indicate that the assay consistently detects wood frog DNA in the environment to 1.83x10-3 pg/μL. The assay provides a complement to traditional survey methods and can …

2016 Annual Population Report Tables (April 15, 2017), Portland State University. Population Research Center, Risa Proehl

Oregon Population Estimates and Reports

The population data in the 2016 annual report tables were compiled by the Population Research Center, Portland State University, 4/18/2017.

The tables in the tabs in this workbook hold the 2016 population estimates produced by the Population Research Center, Portland State University. The July 1 estimates of total population for counties and cities and towns were certified December 15, 2016.

Some tables include the U.S. Census Bureau's decennial Census counts and historical population estimates produced by our Center, and other tables include calculations of change since Census 2010. Also included are population estimates for broad age groups and 5-year age …

Forest Inventory Data, Izaya Numata, Mark Cochrane, Jeppe Kjaersgaard, Sonaira Souza Da Silva

Drought in Amazonia Data Sets

Forest inventory was conducted in Acre, the southwestern Amazon, in July-August in 2014. Field data was collected in four fragmented forest areas. In addition, this forest inventory includes data in forest areas burned in 2005 and 2010 and unburned forest areas. Forest inventory includes information on vegetation species and stem diameter at breast height (DBH) at each plot of 25m x 25m. All trees with DBH ≥ 10cm were measured at 25m x 25m plots and those with DBH< 10cm and lianas were measured at 10m x 10m and 5m x 5m subplots within each 25m x 25m plot.
