In order to understand current trends and use of social media in libraries, VCU Libraries created and conducted an online survey using SurveyMonkey. Our approach was informed by the study of social media and public relations practice conducted by Wright and Hinson (Wright, Donald K. and Michelle Drifka Hinson. 2015. “Examining Social and Emerging Media Use in Public Relations Practice: A Ten-Year Longitudinal Analysis.” Public Relations Journal 9).

The present microbiome study reports a follow up microbiome characterization of the Porifera Tree of Life (PorToL) project, which has recognized the significance of understanding the evolutionary relationships among diverse sponge taxa (Redmond et al 2012; Thacker et al, 2013; and see http://Portol.org). The aim of this research is to opportunistically expand on the work of Hill et al. (2013) to provide preliminary data that 1) compares the diversity of bacterial communities across eight sponge taxa and 2) compares the differences between DNA and cDNA (RNA) generated 16S rRNA data to distinguish active vs. non-active bacteria.

Tissue Expression Patterns Identify Mouse Cilia Genes, Timothy S. Mcclintock

A summary of 2,127 mouse genes linked to cilia by previous high-throughput approaches (reviewed in Inglis et al., 2006), published studies of individual gene products, or by McClintock et al. 2008. Each gene was viewed at Entrez Gene to verify and update the Gene ID and Gene Symbol. Each was also searched against PubMed (Gene Symbol AND (cili* OR flagel*)) for published evidence linking the mouse gene or putative orthologs to cilia or flagella. Introduction: This study is to quantitatively investigate the dimensions of the sella turcica in southern Chinese. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study consists of 582 (277 females and 305 males) lateral cephalometric radiograph randomly selected from 12-year old school children in Hong Kong without history of craniofacial surgey, trauma, syndromes, cleft lip or palate. Image J software (version 1.45) was used for linear measurements. The dimensions of sella turcica were measured using the Frankfurt plane as horizontal reference direction. Interacting Effects Of Urbanization And Coastal Gradients On Ant Thermal Responses, Robert Warren

Urban-to-rural gradients intersect with other, often unmeasured, environmental gradients that may influence or even supersede species responses. Here we use coastal-to-interior and urban-rural gradients to investigate woodland ant response (physiological thermal tolerance, community structure and spring phenology) to two overlapping thermal gradients, the Great Lakes (Erie and Ontario) and the Buffalo, NY urban center (USA). Woodland ant physiological and behavioral responses, and community responses, shifted along the coastal-to-interior and urban-rural gradients, but they were generally best explained by lake effects (though urban ants tolerated higher temperatures than rural ants). Species can coexist through equalizing (similar fitness abilities) and stabilizing (unique niche requirements) mechanisms – assuming that intraspecific competition imposes more limitation than interspecific competition. Non-native species often de-stabilize coexistence, suggesting that they bring either a fitness advantage or a distinct niche requirement. We tested whether greater fitness or unique niche requirements best explained a successful North American invasion by the European Myrmica rubra ant. North American invaded-range M. rubra aggressively sting and occur in enormous numbers (suggesting a fitness advantage), yet our study site has a history of anthropogenic disturbance that might favor M. rubra (suggesting a unique niche). …

The database compiles data (used in Tarquinio et al. 2018, ISME Journal, accepted for publication) obtained from nitrogen stable isotope analysis (IRMS) and Nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) of seagrass (Posidonia sinuosa) leaves and associated microorganisms. Row data (IRMS) are presented for bulk tissue ¹⁵N enrichment of P. sinuosa leaves at different times of incubation (plotted as bar chart in the manuscript), as well as the enrichment detected through the drawing of regions of interest (ROI) from NanoSIMS image analysis and plotted as box plots in the manuscript.

Samples were collected in the northern Gulf of Mexico on cruises DP02, DP03 and DP04 from August 2015 - August 2016. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) data were integrated with those from population dynamics and stable isotope analysis to provide evidence for effects of oil exposure to deep pelagic communities. The target fish species include Argyropelecus spp., Ceratoscopelus warmingii, Chauliodus sloani, Diaphus spp., Lampanyctus alatus, Lepidophanes guentheri, and Sigmops elongatus. This dataset consists of benthic and planktic foraminiferal carbon isotope (C-13, C-14) measurements from sediment cores taken throughout the northern Gulf of Mexico with relation to the Deepwater Horizon. Stable isotope measurements were performed on Cibicidoides spp., Uvigerina spp. and Globigerinoides ruber (white).
