In October 1956, Dr. Deborah Coggins, health officer for Madison, Jefferson, and Taylor counties, sat down to lunch in Madison, Florida, with a public health nurse to discuss a matter of mutual official concern. Because of their busy schedules the lunch hour was the only mutually available time for the meeting. But since the doctor was white and the nurse black, the business luncheon led to the dismissal of the doctor by indignant commissioners of the three counties. Her “breach of social tradition” had been so serious, according to the commissioners, that it rendered her unfit to continue in the …

The United States Supreme Court, on May 17, 1954, delivered its famous Brown decision which forbade separate public school systems for black and white children. Reaction throughout most of the South was swift, and among public officials it ranged from hostility and bitterness to mild anger. Georgia’s Governor Herman Talmadge was perhaps the most outspoken in his opposition to the decree: “The United States Supreme Court by its decision today has reduced our Constitution to a mere scrap of paper.” Mississippi’s Senator James Eastland was scarcely less vitriolic: “The South will not abide by nor obey this legislative decision by …

The W.T. Carter and Brother Lumber Company began in 1898 and operated until 1968 when it was sold to the U.S. Plywood Corporation. The Polk County, Texas company harvested longleaf pine during a crucial period of development for the Texas economy. The lumber industry was the state’s first large scale commercial enterprise not dependent on farming and provided a model for future extractive industries in the state. The W.T. Carter and Brother Lumber Company town of Camden, Texas exemplifies rural implementations of the company town system in the Texas lumber industry. In November 2007, a team of reporters from the Benton County Daily Record published an expose revealing that Ken Williams, the mayor of Centerton, Arkansas, had been living a double life. In his former life as Don LaRose, he was a preacher in the Northeast, who one day vanished without a trace. His wild saga includes Satanists, truth serums, and a supposed murder. The Benton County Daily Record confronted the former reverend several times before he finally confessed to his double life. In our own time, when rapid changes in attitudes toward sexual morality are conversational coin, it is interesting to consider an experiment in the regulation of morals devised in Pensacola, Florida, in the early years of the twentieth century. As a port city, Pensacola responded historically to the sexual desires of large numbers of male transients by noteworthy permissiveness. The city displayed a similarly liberal attitude towards the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

St. Augustine is unusual among most American cities in that it possesses a distinct local atmosphere and character. Largely this charm stems from its Spanish heritage— the narrow streets overarched with balconies, its moss-covered coquina rock walls, and its ancient historic monuments such as the Castillo de San Marcos. But many of the buildings and homes of the city reflect the spirit of a more recent age, that of Victorian America before the turn of the century, when St. Augustine was the winter home of affluent Northerners. Leon was the largest and richest county in Florida at the outbreak of the Civil War. Its population numbered 12,343, and its property was assessed at $8,843,095 in 1860. It led the state in agriculture; its farms were valued at $2,482,211, and during the crop year 1859 they produced 16,686 bales of cotton, 421,654 bushels of corn, and 136,038 bushels of sweet potatoes. It ranked third in manufacturing. Twenty-six establishments in 1859 employed 239 male and seven female workers and produced products worth $261,200. The county, like the rest of Florida and the South, suffered grievous economic losses during the …

A list of the most noteworthy congressional debates over slavery would include those on the Compromises of 1820 and 1850, the Gag Rule, the slave trade, and the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, among others. Sometimes, however, debate on a comparatively minor episode of a large issue can be highly illuminating. Florida Historical Quarterly

Pensacola during the 1820s was hardly more than a small frontier town, yet its citizens, with a predominately French and Spanish background, enthusiastically supported a theatre. Its importance is not that major theatrical personalities were attracted to the community, but that such a remote town, still the center of Indian trade, would welcome a theatre at all. The desire and support of dramatic entertainment suggests a different perspective from the conception of Pensacola during this period as a raw frontier town surrounded by wilderness.
