William Pope Duval, who served four terms as territorial governor of Florida, was a natural storyteller.1 His tales were crafted and fabricated with so much skill that his listeners believed every word as the absolute truth. Fashion has been a catalyst for social change throughout human history. Fashion in 1920s America in particular reflects society's rapidly evolving attitudes towards gender and race. Beginning with how corsetry heavily restricted women for nearly four hundred years up until the twentieth century, this thesis explores how clothing has acted as a tool for societal progression following World War I and Women's Suffrage and during the Jazz Age and The Harlem Renaissance. Specifically, this thesis examines how the influence of jazz music and dance that originated from Black American communities led to the creation of the flapper evening dress. The …

The Dances Of Diplomacy: French Social Dance Culture In The United States, 1780-1800, Kaylar Gina Moser

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis explores how social dancing in the United States formed a noteworthy aspect of political, diplomatic, social, and class exchange for U.S. elites both domestically and overseas; and how the cultural dominance over dance that France enjoyed during this period created an informal cultural diplomatic relationship between the United States and France in the 1780s and the 1790s. I argue that U.S. elites utilized this dance culture as a form of upper-class status legitimation that could serve diplomatic purposes. This project increases the purview of U.S. cultural diplomatic studies by centering on the eighteenth century and by utilizing an …

The Johnston Family Papers is a collection primarily focused on genealogical materials. Much of the content was gathered by Andrew D. Johnston, with significant contributions from family members. The collection includes genealogical research conducted by both Andrew D. Johnston and Patricia Andrews Johnston Treadwell. This research comprises Family Tree Maker files, pedigree charts, descendant reports, ahnentafel reports, family unit charts, grave records, family narratives, published genealogical resources, marriage announcements, and obituaries. Prominent family names in the collection include Johnston, Huber, Nesbit, Stassen, Wiedderecht, Glass, Briegel, and Boese.

Among the new American residents in the crowd was Cary Nicholas, a thirty-four-year-old transplanted Kentuckian who, like so many others, saw in the territory the prospect for a new start in a life too full of disappointments and failures.

While the greater Miami area today is the nexus of Florida’s continuing motion picture industry, this was not always the case. Historically, Jacksonville, and to a lesser extent Tampa, were the leading film centers of the state prior to 1920. This reflected their early importance as commercial and transportation hubs, but these advantages began to be outweighed as other areas within Florida also began to develop as popular location sites.

The Civil War was more than dramatic sieges, heroic charges, and bloody encounters. There were numerous isolated and little-publicized acts of valor and triumph on both sides. If such affairs did not directly influence the outcome of the war, they hid a special poignance of their own. For Southerners who increasingly learned to endure the painful news of costly mistakes, defeats, and reversals, such individual triumphs were particularly welcome. One example of courage and success occurred on June 2, 1862, in a remote theatre of the conflict: Florida.

"The decade of the nineties is the watershed of American history," wrote Henry Steele Commager in The American Mind. The case of Tampa, Florida, in this period reinforces Commager’s suggestive thesis that the ten years before the beginning of the twentieth century ushered in modern values accompanied by a profound population change, economic transformation, and urban problems. War, immigration, urbanization, racial turmoil, labor strife, and industrialization— crises of the nineties— helped forge the transformation of Tampa during this era which resulted in the 1899 “Huelga de la Pesa,” (the Weight Strike) and its aftermath.

It has been conventional to equate the conflict between the southern Indians and the United States during the War of 1812 with the Creek war of 1813-1814. More correctly, however, there were three stages of the fighting, each emanating from standing grievances against the Americans nursed by Creek and Seminole bands, but receiving their initial impetus from separate sources. In 1812 and 1813, the Seminoles and their Negro allies, rallied by the Spanish who were concerned to protect their possessions in the south from American filibusters, participated in a number of skirmishes.
