Mathematics As Rhyme, Vern Poythress
Mathematics As Rhyme, Vern Poythress
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1981
Using the analogy between the universe and a choral poem, one may view mathematics as the “rhyme” of the universe. In that perspective new light is thrown on the unique subject matter of mathematics, the a priori character of its truths, and the relation of mathematics to other areas of knowledge. A route is thereby opened for richer use of creativity in mathematics.
Science As Allegory, Vern Poythress
Science As Allegory, Vern Poythress
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1981
The universe is God’s choral poem, and science is a system of allegories within it. That is the thesis that I propose to expound and defend. Yet it is not a “thesis” at all, if the word “thesis” commits me to a certain kind of strict logical defense. I am not putting forward my thesis that science is allegory as the endpoint of a deductive or inductive argument. Rather, it is a springboard for a program of exploration and reflection that turns upside-down some conventional ways of thinking about science.

The Effect Of Para-Chlorophenylalanine And Scopolamine On Passive Avoidance In Chicks, Bruce A. Mattingly, James F. Zolman
The Effect Of Para-Chlorophenylalanine And Scopolamine On Passive Avoidance In Chicks, Bruce A. Mattingly, James F. Zolman
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Four-day-old Vantress x Arbor Acre chicks were tested for key-peck passive avoidance (PA) learning following intraperitoneal injections of parachlorophenylalanine (PCPA) and/or scopolamine. In Experiment 1, chicks were pre-treated with either three or five injections of PCPA (150 mg/kg) or saline across the first three posthatch days and then tested for PA learning on the fourth posthatch day. In Experiment 2, chicks were first pre-treated with three injections of PCPA (150 mg/kg) or saline, and then injected with either scopolamine (0.5 mg/kg) or saline 20 rain prior to PA testing on the fourth posthatch day. Major findings were: (a) Chicks pre-treated …
An Analysis Of Selected Psycholinguistic Instructional Aids For The Remediation Of Learning Deficiencies Among Early Elementary Children, Janice S. Williams
An Analysis Of Selected Psycholinguistic Instructional Aids For The Remediation Of Learning Deficiencies Among Early Elementary Children, Janice S. Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem was to determine whether selected psycholinguistic instructional aids were effective in remediating learning deficiencies among early elementary children (grades 1-3). Literature was reviewed to substantiate a need for the use of psycholinguistic instructional aids for remediation of learning deficiencies among early elementary children. Research surveyed included auditory perception skills, language skills, motor skills, and visual perception skills. Data were collected from test groups of students in grade levels one, two, and three. A stratified random sampling technique yielded a sample of thirty-six students, eighteen males and eighteen females. Each of the three grade level groups in the sample …
Improving Instructional Skills Of Special Education Teachers Using A Group Training Package, R. Thomas Arkwright
Improving Instructional Skills Of Special Education Teachers Using A Group Training Package, R. Thomas Arkwright
Masters Theses
The objective of the present study was to develop and evaluate a training package which facilitates instructional skills of special education teachers in a practical, cost-efficient manner. After pretraining sessions of staggered baseline lengths, each teacher received sample program forms with written instructions and concise training on usage. As session performance stabilized, three teachers were taught specific performance feedback competencies and began giving verbal feedback during four other teachers' instructional sessions in a multiple-baseline across behaviors design. In addition to instructional competencies, generalization and maintenance effects were also assessed. Results indicate: 1) general training and program materials improved the instructional performance …
Atropine Disrupts Passive Avoidance Learning In Young Chicks T, Bruce A. Mattingly, James F. Zolman
Atropine Disrupts Passive Avoidance Learning In Young Chicks T, Bruce A. Mattingly, James F. Zolman
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Four-day-old Vantress × Arbor Acre chicks were first trained to key-peck for heat reinforcement and then tested for passive avoidance learning following an intraperitoneal injection of atropine sulfate or saline. Chicks injected with 1.0 mg/kg of atropine responded more quickly than saline-injected chicks when their key-peck responses were punished with aversive wing-shocks. These findings, therefore, are consistent with the view that cholinergic mechanisms are involved in inhibitory behavior in the young domestic chick.

Changes In Beginning Teachers' Attitudes Towards Individualised Teaching Approaches During The First Year Of Teaching, A. J. Rentoul, Barry J. Fraser
Changes In Beginning Teachers' Attitudes Towards Individualised Teaching Approaches During The First Year Of Teaching, A. J. Rentoul, Barry J. Fraser
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
It is generally acknowledged that the beginning months of teaching can be a formidable and even painful ordeal for many teachers. For this reason, the beginning teacher has been the focus in a number of key studies conducted recently in various countries. The recent Auchmuty Report has recommended that teacher education research should include "Iongitudinal studies of the socialisation of teachers, covering ... the early years of teaching, with particular reference to the acquisition of professional attitudes and values." The present research is consistent with this recommendation because it represents one of the few existing studies of specific pedagogical attitudes …

A Typology Of Teaching For Use In Teacher Education, Lewis Wilson
A Typology Of Teaching For Use In Teacher Education, Lewis Wilson
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Often when educators 'talk about teaching', they mention 'the nature of the child' and the expectations the child brings to the learning situation. Student teachers also bring expectations to learning situations in College. Though teacher educators inculcate respect in their students for pupil expectancies in school they can ignore the anticipations and concerns of their student teachers. A particular expectancy of many student teachers is that, while at College, they will be taught 'how to teach'. One can justifiably ignore this expectancy to a degree because ultimately each student teacher should develop his or her own style of teaching. To …
Beginning Teachers : A Review Of Research, David Battersby
Beginning Teachers : A Review Of Research, David Battersby
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
During the 1940's and early 1950's a small number of studies of beginning teachers were completed. However, in the late 1950's, particularly in Britain and the United States, the joint problem of teacher shortages and the high drop-out rate of young teachers gave rise to a new wave of studies on beginning teachers. In the last two decades, the recognition of this need has resulted in reports of over 250 studies and a plethora of literature about the beginning teacher. In categorising this material, a broad distinction has emerged between the theory-based research and literature and that which is orientated …
The Relationship Of Student Sex, Attractiveness, And Self-Esteem To Teacher Preference Of Seventh Through Eleventh Grade Private School Students, Susan Montgomery Booker
The Relationship Of Student Sex, Attractiveness, And Self-Esteem To Teacher Preference Of Seventh Through Eleventh Grade Private School Students, Susan Montgomery Booker
Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations
This study tested the null hypotheses that student sex, attractiveness, and self-esteem were not related to teacher preference. It was assumed that these variates were communicated nonverbally through photographs. Two hundred twenty yearbook photographs of Caucasian seventh through eleventh grade students attending a private school were considered for the study. Attractiveness and self esteem scores were associated with each student's :10Lo graph. The attractiveness score was obtained by a survey of the photographs. The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory was administered to the students to produce the self-esteem score. A set of criteria was established to determine degrees of attractiveness and self-esteem. …

A Comparative Evaluation Of Two Delivery Systems Of Mainstreaming In-Service Training For Regular Teachers Focusing On Child Change Variables, Glenn Earl Andis
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to evaluate mainstreaming in-service training practices for regular teachers which result in successful child change. The research design implemented was a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group design with a pretest and a posttest. There were three comparison groups: (a) mainstreamed children and classes of regular teachers who participated in a practicum model of mainstreaming in-service, (b) mainstreamed children and classes of regular teachers who participated in a videotape model of mainstreaming in-service, and (c) mainstreamed children and classes of regular teachers who received no treatment (control group) .

A Comparison Of Priority Ratings Of Evaluative Criteria For Instructional Personnel, Cynthia A. Suarez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to compare the priority ratings given to evaluative criteria of four groups within the education profession--superintendents, secondary supervisors, secondary principals, and secondary teachers. The research sought to determine whether or not factors of agreement existed among the four groups of people regarding their attitudes toward important teacher characteristics. A total of fifty-two subjects from four occupational roles was used: thirteen superintendents, thirteen supervisors, thirteen principals, and thirteen teachers. The subjects were administered the Teacher Characteristics Q Sort, a ninety-item sort of adjectives. The results were factor analyzed, and four significant factors emerged. Factor A …

A Study Guide For Eigth Grade Developmental Reading Based On Cooper And Petrosky's Strategies, Barbara Ann Trezise
All Graduate Projects
A study guide, to increase students' ability to use study skills, to read expository and narrative material with greater fluency, and to maintain positive attitudes towards reading, was developed using Cooper and Petrosky's (1976) "A Psycholinguistic View of the Fluent Reading Process." Sequential lessons were designed from available printed materials. A pre/post test attitude scale, study habits survey, and standardized reading achievement tests were administered. Modified miscue analysis provided diagnostic information.

The Teachers Of The English Teachers : The Influence Of The School, The Community And The Training Institution, D. M. Murison
The Teachers Of The English Teachers : The Influence Of The School, The Community And The Training Institution, D. M. Murison
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
At the moment, teacher educators are being forced to contemplate their contribution to the making of a good teacher more seriously than before. Those who feel most vulnerable are the method teachers, since the failures of students in their first year of teaching are most often attributed to the method teacher. I will take English teachers as my example partly because that is my area of immediate concern, partly because so many teachers trained in other areas find themselves teaching English at some stage, and partly because in most states English is a compulsory study up to the end of …
Attitudes Towards Migrants And Needs In Teacher Training : Some Research Findings, R. W. Sealey
Attitudes Towards Migrants And Needs In Teacher Training : Some Research Findings, R. W. Sealey
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The area of immigrant education has become a major source of interest, concern, comment, and research in recent years. This interest has its origins in the concern felt and views expressed at various conferences that many pupils in our schools are in need of an educational approach which will take cognisance of their linguistic and cultural differences.
Mature Aged Students In Teacher Education, Roger B. King, Bruce T. Haynes
Mature Aged Students In Teacher Education, Roger B. King, Bruce T. Haynes
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Mature age students in Teacher Education (21 and over on first enrollment) differ notably in what they look for in their course from the younger students. Analysis of a survey of third year Diploma of Teaching students’ ratings of the relevance of units for teaching showed that students over 25 years of age rated the Education and Educational Psychology units significantly more relevant to teaching than did the younger students. The older students also rated Language Arts units and a Remedial and Special Education Unit as significantly more relevant and Art Education units , Physical Education units and Science Education …
