The Effects Of A Discussion Course On Pre-Student Teachers' Moral Reasoning, Raquel Bennett Holman

This study was undertaken to determine the effect of a cognitive-developmental moral discussion course on the moral reasoning of pre-student teachers as measured by scores on the Defining Issues Test. The specific objective of the course was to facilitate the advancement to postconventional (principled) thinking.

The population for the study consisted of 63 students enrolled in the pre-student teacher program at the University of New Mexico. From this population, 13 pre-student teacher volunteers became the experimental group. Those who did not volunteer became the control group.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there existed significant relationships between 4 and 5 year old children’s attitude toward school, their classroom teacher’s perception of their attitude toward school, length of time in school, sex, or a composite of these with their achievement on the Pre-School Attainment Record. A random sample of 55 Head Start children completed three instruments. Borderline students are always the students who seem to go unnoticed in the classroom. The students' reading levels are not high enough to function at grade level and not low enough to get the extra assistance from the Reading Specialist in the assigned building. Often the students are given just enough reading material to keep them busy.

A reading enrichment program, developed through the use of learning packets and supplemental books, is designed to help alleviate some of the problems these students experience in reading. The learning packet materials were selected to encourage students to appreciate books, learn to read …

The first part of this paper reviews the research evidence accumulated to date which bears on the question, "How useful is information about a student's secondary school for an assessment of his likelihood of succeeding in tertiary studies?" Knowledge of whether a student entering university or college comes from a State, Catholic or other Private school appears to be useful to personnel making admissions decisions. The differing academic performance of students from these three types of schools is largely, unrelated to faculty choice, tertiary entrance qualifications, aptitude and intelligence. Research conducted in the field of cognitive style suggests there are certain learning styles which can be identified, defined and measured. However, the literature points out that a neglected aspect of research is an exploration of relationships between students' cognitive styles and performance. Comparison Of The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test And The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale In School Age Children, Stephen Skiles

The correlate relationships and directionality and magnitude of mean differences between MAs and IQs of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and Revised Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale (both 1960 and 1972 norms) were investigated in a sample of 225 school age children. It was found that MAs of two instruments were more highly correlated than the IQs. For the total sample, no significant differences were found between mean MAs of the two instruments. The correlation between PPVT and the 1960 Revised Stanford-Binet IQs and the correlation between PPVT and 1972 Revised Stanford-Binet IQs were found to be identical. The PPVT was found …

The purposes of this study were : (1) to explore the differences in sex-role stereotyping between college students selecting traditionally sex-appropriate fields of study (Traditionals) and students selecting traditionally sex-inappropriate fields of study (Pioneers), and (2) to examine the differences between the two groups in terms of some specific factors assumed to be related to the development of sex-role stereotyping, i.e., specific parental characteristics, peer influence and school experiences.

Study Behaviour And Tertiary Academic Achievement, E. P. Otto

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Sufficient time and effort expended in study have been shown to be essential pre-requisites to satisfactory examination performance at tertiary level. This paper presents the results of an investigation into the relationship between academic achievement and the variables of student attitudes toward study, effort expended in studying, the availability of a study room and scholarship status. All these variables were significantly related to examination performance during various years of the courses studied. The effects of the study variables operated differentially for males and females in the sample.
