Churchlands College was established in 1972 and was drawing up its first course submission when legislation separating teacher training institutions from the State Government Education Department was passed. With autonomy from the outset, staff were able to plan courses consistent with their own values and expertise. The College as a whole adopted a three-pronged approach to teacher preparation with programmes in curriculum and instruction methods, education and educational psychology and in personal and professional growth and development. Each department considered its possible contribution to these streams. I n considering its contribution to the personal growth programme for trainees the Psychology …

Diploma In Education? Rethinking The Curriculum., A. J. Fielding, D. M. Cavanagh, R. E. Widdowson
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
For well over half a century the traditional end-on diploma year has been under fire from university departments, students, and the teaching profession. How is it possible in one year for students to reach adequate levels of knowledge and understanding in a large number of subjects, epistemologicalIy diverse and frequently outside their undergraduate experience? The answer of course, is that it is not possible to believe otherwise is to labour under gross delusion. A university department of education, acting with the best of intentions, cannot give more than cursory attention to even the most essential elements of a preservice programme …

Milingimbi Aboriginal Learning Contexts, Stephen George Harris
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The main purpose of this study is to provide information for teachers of Australian Aboriginal children about how learning is achieved 'n a fairly traditionally oriented Aboriginal society. The main stimulus for this study was the recognition that bilingual education is only one aspect of bicultural education, and that on its own vernacular literacy does not sufficiently capitalize on culturally conditioned strengths and expectations about learning processes. The research as necessary for several reasons: no detailed study of traditional Aboriginal learning methods has ever been conducted and most whit I Australians, including those teaching Aboriginal children, are not familiar with …

Evaluation Of Direct Instruction In Cloze Procedure, Iola W. Harding
Evaluation Of Direct Instruction In Cloze Procedure, Iola W. Harding
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
In cloze procedure the reader must replace, with some degree of accuracy, the systematically deleted words. Responses to cloze deletions are influenced by the reader's understanding of syntax, morphology and lexical items.
Much of the cloze research which followed Wilson Taylor's first publication on the subject in 1953 has centered on methods of cloze construction as an evaluation instrument with emphasis on test validity, scoring and interpretation. Studies assessing the potential of cloze as an instructional device for improving reading skills are more recent and less conclusive.

Tres Cuentos, Beatriz Cespedes De Fantini
Tres Cuentos, Beatriz Cespedes De Fantini
MA TESOL Collection
Teachers of Spanish are often concerned primarily with the mechanical aspects of language. A student's knowledge of the language is principally determined by his mastery of vocabulary, correct verb forms, etc. By devoting so much concern to the purely linguistic aspects of communication, other important dimensions have often been ignored; for example, the "appropriateness" of language use in a given social context. Once this dimension is considered, it becomes clear that besides knowledge of the mechanical construct of language, the student must also acquire knowledge of what language choices are appropriate for each social situation.
In this work, three original …

The Importance Of Including In An Esl Program: A Study Of Intonation Patterns Used In Everyday Spoken English And Some Suggestions For Working With Intonation In The Classroom, A. Rebecca Cardozo
MA TESOL Collection
Native speakers of English rely on more than just words and grammatical structures to communicate their feelings, attitudes and intentions. In fact, it is often not the words and the grammar that convey the speaker's message. Rather, it is the speaker's intonation pattern, body language and voice volume that get the message across. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate the importance of including in the ESL classroom a study of intonation patterns used in everyday spoken English. It is also the purpose of this paper to suggest materials and methods which could be used in the classroom …

Teaching Across Cultures: A Review Of The Personal Accounts Of Twelve Teachers, Nicholas Hilmers
Teaching Across Cultures: A Review Of The Personal Accounts Of Twelve Teachers, Nicholas Hilmers
MA TESOL Collection
This is a review of the personal accounts of twelve teachers who have worked in cultural settings other than their own. It is intended to be useful to teachers who plan to enter a different culture. The twelve critical reviews are supplemented by a commentary which points out the limitations of the literature and discusses common adjustment problems which appear. It is argued that the success of a teacher in adjusting to a different culture can be attributed to certain qualities of personality. Briefly stated, these qualities are adaptibility, a strong will, creativity and a humanistic attitude.
