Structural Erasure And Suicide Risk: The Impact Of Gender Misrecognition And Institutional Nonsupport On Incarcerated Transgender Adults In California, Julliana Lex Alcala, Allyza Rae Roxas

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Incarcerated transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals experience disproportionately high rates of suicide risk, and correctional environments may intensify minority stress through institutional misrecognition, discrimination, victimization, and restricted access to gender-affirming care. Despite protective policy reforms such as Senate Bill 132, limited research have examined how structural practices shape suicidal ideation among incarcerated TGD populations. This study will investigate how denial of gender-affirming recognition and staff support contributes to suicidal ideation among incarcerated TGD adults in California state prisons. From the perspective of the Gender Minority Stress framework, this study will use a convergent mixed-methods design to examine both statistical relationships …

Feasibility Study Of Transitioning From Thick Plates (0.250”) Mounted On 30-Point Pvc Carriers To Thinner Plate Technologies Mounted On Recyclable Foam And Pet (0.155”) For Post-Print Corrugated, Nathaniel J. Poole

All Theses

In the United States, the most common press configuration for brown-box printing is a 0.280” undercut press. These press configurations have long relied on thick 0.250” plates mounted on 0.030” PVC sheets to print onto corrugated substrates. Each year, around twenty million pounds of waste are produced by the printing industry, through paper waste, plate waste, among other materials. One large factor of that waste is flexographic plate waste, which either ends its life in a landfill or is repurposed into other products. This study establishes a comparison between traditionally used 0.250” plates on 30pt PVC versus 0.155” plates mounted …

Hidden Workload In Emergency Medicine: Examining The Role Of Outside-Of-Shift Duties In Emergency Physician Fatigue, Sarah Meyer

All Theses

Emergency physicians (EPs) face high rates of burnout. In addition to well-known stressors, such as fatiguing shift work schedules and intense emotional and cognitive demands faced during clinical shifts, many EPs must also attend to certain outside-of-shift duties (OSDs)–extra-clinical role responsibilities that are expected but not always formally tracked or compensated. These duties often occur during times when EPs are expected to rest and recover from shift work. Despite concerns surrounding burnout in emergency medicine and beliefs among EPs that OSDs contribute to burnout, the effects of OSDs have rarely been studied. Using daily and weekly surveys across 28 days, …

Robust Hardware Trojan Detection Leveraging Dual‑Domain Features And Stacked Ensemble Learning, Sefatun-Noor Puspa

All Theses

In Cyber-physical systems rely on sensors, communication, and computing, all powered by integrated circuits (ICs). These ICs are vulnerable to malicious hardware attacks, with hardware Trojans being one of the stealthiest threats. Trojans are malicious implants in the circuitry, which are often inserted during design or fabrication stages. This stealthy addition remains dormant until triggered and might cause functional disruptions or sensitive information leakage once triggered. Traditional IC validation methods, such as functional testing and logic analysis, usually fail to capture these subtle anomalies because hardware Trojans are intentionally designed to mimic normal circuit behavior. They often remain dormant under …

Biopharmaceuticals are medicines produced in cells which are used to treat diseases such as cancer. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) represent the majority of approved biotherapeutics. MAbs are mostly produce using Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. CHO cells are favored for resiliency, scalability, and established safety, and are considered the “workhorse” organism for biopharmaceuticals.  Amino acids are a key component of cell culture media, however several amino acids have solubility limits, such as cysteine, cystine, and tyrosine.  At neutral pH, these amino acids are poorly soluble.  However, dipeptides, such as N,N'-di-L-Alanyl-L-Cystine (ACCA) have been reported to increase cysteine and cystine availability. Further, …

How Mindfulness Influences The Frequency Of Flow In Collegiate Athletes, Kelly Torres May 2026

How Mindfulness Influences The Frequency Of Flow In Collegiate Athletes, Kelly Torres

All Theses

Flow is defined as a state of optimal experience characterized by deep focus and total absorption that has been consistently linked to enhanced performance (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990; Jackson and Csikszentmihalyi, 1999). Mindfulness, defined as present-moment awareness with acceptance and nonjudgement, has been widely used in sport psychology interventions to improve both performance and well-being (Harris et al., 2023; Kabat-Zinn, 2015; Reive, 2019). However, less is known about how and why mindfulness contributes to performance outcomes and what role flow plays. This study examined the relationship between trait mindfulness and dispositional flow among Clemson University collegiate athletes (N=144), while exploring …

Desert Ghost, Jessica Downs May 2026

Desert Ghost, Jessica Downs

All Theses

This thesis explores the relationship between landscape, memory, and the body through handmade paper installations inspired by the deserts of southwestern Utah. Drawing from personal experience of place and the loss of a childhood home, the work considers how environments are internalized and persist as shifting, sensory impressions rather than fixed geographies. The desert becomes a generative site for examining presence, transformation, and the passage of time, both geologic and personal.

I use handmade paper and installation to translate my experience of place into physical form. Paper serves as both material and metaphor; its fibers, textures, and muted tones emulate …

Entertainment media may serve as a primary source through which individuals learn about miscarriage; however, little research has examined how miscarriage is portrayed in film and television. This study addresses this gap by conducting a textual analysis of five films and five television shows using a constructivist grounded theory approach. Guided by the model of stigma communication (MSC), communication privacy management theory (CPM), and social support frameworks, the analysis explores how miscarriage is represented in entertainment media.

Findings indicate that the analyzed content frequently includes stigma-related cues—such as marks, labels, responsibility, and peril—that may contribute to the formation and reinforcement …

Micro-Solar Kiln Design: A Cost-Effective Approach For Small Landowners To Produce Higher Quality Lumber, Bart Swecker May 2026

Micro-Solar Kiln Design: A Cost-Effective Approach For Small Landowners To Produce Higher Quality Lumber, Bart Swecker

All Theses

Small-scale and hobby sawmill operators increasingly seek low-cost methods for drying lumber to moisture contents suitable for interior use, yet conventional kiln systems are often impractical due to capital cost, power requirements, and operational complexity. While air drying remains common at small scales, many operators require a controlled finishing step to improve dimensional stability and product value. Solar kilns offer an intermediate solution between air drying and conventional kilns; however, most published designs and performance data focus on systems with capacities far larger than those typically used by small-scale operators. Consequently, limited guidance exists for micro-scale solar kilns, particularly under …

Characterizing The Molecular Response Of Embryonic Zebra Finch To Acute Sound Playback, Saidat O. Adeniran-Obey Miss May 2026

Characterizing The Molecular Response Of Embryonic Zebra Finch To Acute Sound Playback, Saidat O. Adeniran-Obey Miss

All Theses

Auditory stimuli are important cues that influence developmental plasticity in animals and are important for development and adaptation to an ever-changing environment. In the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata), there is evidence of adaptive developmental reprogramming in response to a prenatal ‘heat call’. Embryos exposed to this heat call exhibit changes in growth rate post-hatch, increased heat resistance, and enhanced reproductive success at maturity. However, it has long been assumed that embryonic zebra finches cannot respond to sound due to the immaturity of their auditory system. These findings raise the critical question of whether late-stage zebra finch embryos can, …

Comparative Biomechanics: Blattodea Antennal Morphology And Physiology, Lucas W. Marsh May 2026

Comparative Biomechanics: Blattodea Antennal Morphology And Physiology, Lucas W. Marsh

All Theses

Equipped with muscle-free antennae, many insects can twist and bend their antennae on demand. We hypothesized that hemolymph circulating through the antennae provides pressure that facilitates twisting and bending and provides a feedback control channel for tactile sensing in insects. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a thorough morphological and physiological analysis of antennae in three Clades of Blattodea. We studied morphology by evaluating the distinguishable features of the body and antenna, as well as the internal structure of the antennal lumen. Then, in a series of experiments on live cockroaches, we measured blood pressure along the antenna. This was …
